  • The @GlobalFund is calling on the world to #StepUpTheFight against HIV, TB, and malaria. This October, French President @emmanuelmacron will host the Global Fund’s Sixth Replenishment Conference. This Replenishment seeks to raise at least $14 billion to help save 16 million lives. While pledges from countries thus far have been encouraging, we still need robust pledges to get people the lifesaving services they need to combat these epidemics. You can be a part of the generation that makes HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria a thing of the past. Learn more about how you can act by clicking the link in our bio.

  • In 1985, scientists discovered a hole in the ozone layer. They warned that if left unchecked, the hole would grow, letting through ultraviolet radiation that would wreak havoc on humans and the environment.
Two years after the discovery, the international community came together with the @unitednations to create a binding international treaty, the #MontrealProtocol, that would lead to the healing of the ozone layer. On #OzoneDay, we recognize that we need countries, businesses, and citizens to work together to solve the world’s toughest problems, like protecting people and planet.

  • Hurricane Dorian was the strongest storm on record to ever hit the Bahamas — and tied for the most powerful Atlantic hurricane to make landfall. For nearly 40 hours, the hurricane churned over Grand Bahama — one of the most populated of the Carribean nation’s islands — causing massive destruction and displacement.
Early estimates suggest as much as 20% of the country’s population — roughly 70,000 people — require immediate assistance. It’s time to step up and help thousand of families in need. Help the @unitednations deliver lifesaving humanitarian relief to survivors of Hurricane Dorian by swiping up in our story.

  • As recently as 2012, Nigeria was home to more than half of all polio cases in the world in part from misinformation on vaccines  But for the past three years, the country has reported zero cases of wild polio, a debilitating virus that paralyzes children.

@UNICEF has partnered with the Nigerian government, NGOs, local leaders, and over 20,000 volunteers to get the country close to eliminating wild polio. Working with community leaders and a volunteer force of women has been key to building trust and combating anti-vaccine myths.

  • In times of emergency – when conflict and disaster strike – the needs and rights of girls are often neglected. Today, millions of girls have been uprooted from their homes, removed from school, and at risk of violence and forced marriage. Globally, 26 million women and adolescent girls need humanitarian assistance.⠀

Today marks one year since the passing of former #UnitedNations Secretary-General @kofiannan, regarded by so many as a guiding force for good. "In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations. He rose through the ranks to lead the Organization into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. "In these turbulent and trying times, he never stopped working to give life to the values of the United Nations Charter. His legacy will remain a true inspiration for us all." 📷: UN Photo

  • In a world of division, young people are standing up for collective action. Sparked by 16-year-old Swedish activist, @GretaThunberg, thousands of young people have taken to the streets to march for #ClimateAction. Part of their rallying cry is to push global leaders to uphold their commitments on the #ParisAgreement. These protests present a historic shift in our approach to tackling urgent global challenges.

Accounting for 16% of the global population and the largest generation of young people in history – the active engagement and leadership of youth will be critical to achieving the #SDGs and averting the most severe challenges the world faces -- climate and beyond. On #YouthDay, we salute youth activists everywhere.

Economies and societies are blocked in their development progress if they are affected by conflict and high levels of violence. It’s projected right now that by 2030, if we stay on our current path, more than half of the extreme poor in the world will live in conflict-affected countries.” ⠀

  • A new report from the @IPCC finds that we must dramatically change the way we use land to limit global warming to safe levels by 2030.

The IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land explores the relationship between #ClimateChange and landscapes — and what it means for our collective future. It arrives less than a year after the IPCC’s alarm-raising 1.5°C report, which found that the world needs to take urgent action to avert the worst impacts of climate change beyond 1.5°C degrees warming. Get three takeaways from the report by checking out our story.
