Roland Schoeman Profile Information

  • The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my life is not the training, not the competing and not even the highs and very lows that come with being a peak performer. The biggest challenge I face in life is letting people in. Through years of programming and various scars that have been inflicted over time I find it truly hard to be vulnerable and to open myself up to people. It is something I’ve been working on (Some may have noticed more authenticity in my previous posts) and something I am actively trying to work on every single day and trust me it’s not easy. I hurt myself and I hurt the people around me that I love when I live with my guard up.
I find some comfort in the fact that I now recognize this and am actively taking steps to be a better version of myself.
The reality in this life is we aren’t often aware of the struggles and internal conflicts that those around us go through. Most (like me) aren’t able or willing to share. In general we are often too quick to judge and too harsh in our response when someone does.
We are all fighting some form of battle internally. Can we find a way to be more gentle, more loving and more accepting of ourselves and the others around us? I know it is one of my many goals.
Some of my goals over the next while are to tell myself * I am lovable * I am kind and loving, and I have a great deal to share with others * I am talented, intelligent and creative
* I am attractive
* I deserve the very best in life
* I have a lot to offer and everyone recognizes it
* I love the world and the world loves me
* I am willing to be happy and successful
Wishing every one of you the strength, patience and self love to triumph over your own doubts, insecurities and challenges. I’m here on this journey with you

Much love ❤️❤️❤️❤️

  • Good luck to everyone competing at the world champs this year. Loved the opportunity to race in Europe over the summer. It was incredible being back up on the blocks, feeling the nerves and the excitement

  • Getting older means getting wiser, learning new things, making lots of mistakes, realizing what’s important and what is not. “Youth is wasted on the young” is an adage I contemplate all too frequently. We learn the lessons in this lifetime when we are ready for them. I’m so incredibly excited for what the future holds. I’d like to thank everyone one of you out there for all your love and your years of support. It means the world to me. Sending you all love and gratitude. 📷 by @fabioswim

  • Happy #olympicday It is truly an honor to be a part of such an elite group of participants. Don’t ever let anyone else tell you what you can and cannot achieve. If I’d listened to everyone who told me I’d never amount to anything or that the dream of attending an Olympics is foolish I wouldn’t be where I am today. The road to success is not linear, it will be filled with challenges, mistakes, lessons, tears, sweat, smiles and growth opportunities. Don’t be afraid to try new things, to reinvent yourself. You don’t need to take the road that everyone else has. Focus on the things you can control. Try not to worry about the things you can’t (I say try, because I’m guilty of it too) Above all try enjoy it day to day. We don’t have as long as we think we do

  • We live in a day and age where people complain about being too old, too weak and too unfit. So many just resign themselves to the fact they are too unhealthy. This body is all we have and the choice is yours. Everyday in some way or another I choose to become a better version of myself. I eat healthy, I exercise, I stretch, I meditate. Today is #globalwellnessday and I’d like to challenge every single one of you to start (or continue) your journey of health and wellness. If you’re starting from scratch it may seem like an uphill battle but remember that you have to start the journey in order to reach the destination. You’ve heard me say it before, age is only a number. Some people conveniently use it as an excuse. @gary.player is the perfect example of someone that continues to invest in his health and wellness. We are all capable of so much, all we need to do is start the journey. Sending love to all of you out there

  • It’s been a while since I last posted anything. I’ve been seeing so many inauthentic posts on here for so long. What I mean by that is athletes and people trying to convey how perfect life is. They’re giving you a snap shot into their existence. So many people see what athletes and celebrities are doing and live in awe. The battles that athletes, musicians, actors etc have to go through are often unseen and unheard but it is important that you all know we go through the same insecurities, the same depression, the same roller coaster of emotions. We are all human. Just because some have an extraordinary gift doesn’t always make their lives perfect. Look up to people who are honest about their successes as well as their struggles. In my opinion we need greater truth and authenticity on these platforms. Hope you are all having a blessed year so far. Much love ❤️❤️

  • Many people ask me why I’m still swimming. Some go as far as to suggest I’m “too old”. Too old based on what is always my response. We live in a day and age where social media has created armchair experts. Most don’t actually understand the sport, the training or the requirements that go into being an elite athlete. I still swim because I can, because I love the water. I swim because I continue to adopt a growth mindset - “how can I be better, how can I be faster?” Sure I’m older, Dara Torres was 41 when she won a silver in the 50free in Beijing. @tombrady is the goat because he continues to challenge once firm held beliefs on age. Sport is evolving - training methodologies are improving, recovery methods are improving. As we gain a deeper understanding we are seeing better performances and older athletes. You can either be at the forefront of these changes, or you can lag behind. I know what my choice is

  • Some weekend wisdom - ““Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.” - Bruce Lee

  • What an incredible first final to be a part of last night. Four 50 butterfly world champions & 3 of us World Record holders in the event. I’ve said it a couple times before but I’m very thankful to be back racing against the best in the world. Thank you @hawkebr & @gymnasticbodies for helping me on this quest
