Just taking my 📷 for a little dip: My lenses have served well as a passport, (obsessively so at times) to many places — some exotic and magical, many wild and a few — well not so comfortable. But trying to capture the beauty of our shared planet keeps me chasing perspectives and pixels. This snap, taken on assignment for @natgeo a few years back in Antarctica, nearly froze my lips off my face but those shrinking icy blues….I couldn’t resist. Happy #worldphotographyday #antarctica #conservation #nature #shrinkage #sonyalpha Thx for 📸 @jonbowermaster
The marvels of flight - it offers perspective and time travel combined. As much as I appreciate it, I love time hunkered at home to “let my soul catch up to my body” as my old friend @madhav108 once told me. #archive #Himalaya #india #peace #ganges #smog #mist #aerial #nature
Rue Reflections: Its remarkable to think this iron-lattice tower was first criticized after its construction in 1887-89 but today, Mr. Eiffel's old office has become the most visited paid-monument in the world, and a coveted, wedding photo backdrop (photo #2.) #Louvre (Photo #3). Favorite? Fun to see old friends

#Powell150 || On August 13, 1869 John Wesley Powell and his crew had made it to the Grand Canyon, supplies dwindling but at least they had one important thing - something to keep them alert as they faced their fears.
“We are now ready to start on our way down the Great Unknown...We have but a month's rations remaining. The flour has been resifted through the mosquito net sieve; the sugar has all melted, and gone on its way down the river; but we have a large sack of coffee.” @americanrivers #grandcanyon #JohnWesleyPowell #ColoradoRiver 📸 #petemcbride
“We are now conservationists… ” (Sound On.) Last fall I had the privilege to work with @USAID documenting the community conservation work in northern Kenya. @r.e.s.c.u.e is one of many wildlife success stories which has been supported by @NRT_Kenya and the Samburu people where stars like Dorothea have been instrumental. It is amazing to see people, once afraid of elephants, now caring and protecting them. On this #WorldElephantDay enjoy this short success story about one small group making huge differences in protecting our tusked, intelligent friends. #nature #elephants #wildlife #community #conservation #sonyalpha 🎥 by @pedromcbride & friends @mclain.david @bsargeant90 @sonyalpha. Time for Tuskers: I’ve been privileged to spend a lot of time around elephants in my work. These gentle giants are apex creatures that help ecosystems function. Tomorrow is #worldelephantday, but frankly, every day we should be grateful these intelligent, matriarchal, family-oriented creatures share our world. We need to find ways to live with them as they are more valuable alive than dead. Roughly 90% of African elephants have been killed in the last century to ivory poaching and human/wildlife conflicts. A lot has been done to protect Elies but there is a lot more to do to ensure future generations hears their trumpets. To learn more, check out these groups working to help them: @savetheelephants @nrt_kenya @africanparks @r.e.s.c.u.e 📸 by #petemcbride. #elephants #nature #malawi #conservation #wild
I love how tiny this place makes me feel — small in a good way that teases wonder and awakens awe. This panoramic image is from my @rizzolibooks Grand Canyon book that I’m delighted to say has gone into its third printing. I’ll be doing a US speaking tour with @natgeo #nglive this fall where you can hear @kevinfedarkoauthor and I talk about what we learned on our 750-mile+ journey through this landscape - and get signed books. Check my site (link in bio) to see our speaking schedule. #grandcanyon #betweenriverandrim #publiclands #nature #awe #panoramic #tryptich #sonyalpha 📷 by #petemcbride
Moonlight Manta: Under the rays of a full moon and a shore LED, these gentle, curious giants swam their nightly ballet. Manta rays have learned that light attracts plankton which equals food. So the real dance is how tour operators off the coast of Hawaii can provide safe, sustainable encounters without harming these harmless, intelligent creatures. Adhering to diving protocols that don’t attract mantas into boat hulls, propellers or lines and limiting diver impact to the thousands that come for this manta ballet is the goal. Being aware of this delicate dance helps all, especially the star - the manta. #mantaray #wildlife #conservation #ocean #tourism #nature

My wildlife filmmaker friend @BertieGregory recently finished a journey to the edge of the Arctic in his new @NatGeo series 'Wild_Life: The Big Freeze'. Join Bertie as he walks with polar bears, gets into the middle of a wolf pack and dives under the sea ice with harp seals. Every year, the big freeze happens later and ends earlier, raising the stakes for all our animal characters. Ultimately, we’ll learn that despite most of the human population living miles from any sea ice, we are all connected to it and all depend on it.
