  • What a meetup!! It was so nice to finally meet with so many of you I’ve followed and admired for a while! Folks, if you’re a beginner and not sure how best to use your camera or drone, we have you covered! If you’re looking for like-minded people who are also into photography, we have you covered! If you’re an experienced or knowledgeable photographer and/or drone operator and you want help someone with their craft, we can surely use you! It was a blast, and I appreciate everyone who was able to make it this time, and I hope to see some others in the future who expressed interest but couldn’t pull it off. So, as for the next meet up, some of you probably heard me speak about it, but I think we’re going to give some “late risers” something to look forward to with a sunset, early evening shoot out. And this one will be at Piedmont Park! I haven’t nailed down a date yet, but it’s definitely not going to be until AFTER the Independence Day weekend. Just to give you something to look forward to, this park gives you the PERFECT shot of Atlanta’s midtown skyline, and you get THREE shots for the price of one: use your ND filters and take a daytime long exposure in the late afternoon; take a sunset photo as it dips down behind the midtown skyline; stay until it gets a little dark for a night shot of the skyline! Trust me, you don’t want to miss this one! .
.
.
Anyway, I haven’t edited anything yet, so here’s a shot from about 2-3 years ago of the skyline from what’s called (locally) “The Grady Curve” (is that correct?)

  • June photographer meet up: let’s hit the 17th Street Bridge for a sunrise shot of midtown this Saturday the 15th. I’ll be at the bridge at 5am, and I believe sunrise should start around 5:58 or so. At 5, you get a good night shot of the skyline, and then you stay in place for the sunrise—two shots for the price of one! Another cool shot from here is the sun rising from the left (Midtown) and some light trails straight ahead of you leading downtown (I75/85 southbound). You can also double-back (QUICKLY) to the Millennium Gate Museum for a really good sunrise shot of Atlantic Station from the pedestrian bridge. You can park at Atlantic Station free for the first two hours, but there are also a few spots near the residential area that are free. Just be careful to not block anyone’s driveway. If you have any questions, please feel free to DM me, but the plan right now is to meet me on the bridge at whatever hour you can make it. I’ll be there at 5 for some night shots and to plan my sunrise shot. .

This is a shot I took of the downtown area last year. It’s a completely different city before the traffic starts.

  • “Quick” landscape/cityscape photography tip: Want to get your camera out of automatic mode and learn more about its settings and capabilities? First of all, IGNORE everyone you hear say that “real” photographers shoot in manual. The bottom line is the result, not the method. Try this trick and see if it helps you: Shoot in aperture priority mode. The aperture is the opening allowing light to enter the camera; it’s either wide open (low f-stop number) or it’s narrow (higher f-stop number). In this mode, the camera will automatically decide the proper ISO and shutter speed. I’m trying to give the Cliff Notes version of this, so you may have to explore a little more on your own. If you plan to shoot cityscapes or landscapes, you may want EVERYTHING in focus and sharp, so you want a higher number, like f9-f16 or so. Personally, I shoot my cityscapes and around f9-f11 (ALL at ISO 100) sometimes higher. This increases your shutter time because you’re allowing a small amount of light in at a time (smaller opening), so bring a tripod! .
.
So to break it down and keep it VERY simple: If you want everything sharp, choose a higher f-stop number, making a more narrow path for the light to make it through to the sensor. The camera will choose your ISO (but I recommend this to be at your camera’s lowest possible setting; I can cover the “why” in another post, but high ISO isn’t good for this kind of photography), and it will choose your exposure time. After a while you’ll start to understand the relationship between aperture, ISO, and shutter speed and how to have an affect on each and every one of them. Hope that helps someone! .

  • Can I go on a rant for a second? Look, I don’t like to call out businesses or locations, but I’ve been pushed to level 10 of my “pissed-off-ness” with customer service. If you are managing (or own) a fast food or retail establishment, PLEASE go to Chick-Fil-a and BEG them to teach you how to hire better people because some of your employees suck BIG TIME! If you don’t like working the cash register at 6am when Kroger opens, then DON’T TAKE the job! I’m taking to YOU, Kroger on Moreland near Best Buy! There are people in the customer service industry who believe their job is keep up with communications on their phones, and any interruption by an actual CUSTOMER is just that—AN INTERRUPTION! I’m sick of this crap! If your employees aren’t happy working there, PLEASE fire them! Tell them to pack up their attitudes, phones, and $15/hour dreams, and get the hell out! Sorry, but I’ve had it up to HERE with these attitudes. I’m about to adjust that for some folks! Don’t make me act like where I’m from! .

Sorry for that rant and language, and now on to what this gallery is about: photography! Ugh....I’m beginning to really like this view of Atlanta. For visitors who fly in, when you see this view as you travel north into the city from the airport, brace yourself for some traffic. You’ve been warned 😂😉
