when i was a kid, my family’s house burned down. we lived out in the country and at first the fire trucks couldn’t find us. so i ran barefoot down the mile long gravel road, in the middle of december, to bring them to us. i think about that gravel road a lot.
i’ve always had a terrible time with monogamy. i think it represents something more than just sex, theres a feeling of being trapped, of “the end”, of a slow death. i’ve raged against this my whole life, while at the same time desperately wanting a partner. just wanting to fill that hole in the chest.
all my friends:
andy and i had a project for a while where we would get a bunch of our friends in a studio to write and record a song in one day. just making stuff for the fun of it. this was the first of those sessions. one of the most fun sessions i’ve ever been a part of. sean lane summoned some kind of magic for the drums. we dragged erik walter’s stoned ass out of bed at 1 in morning to come down and play guitar.
i rewrote the lyrics later as a reflection on a time in my life where i was essentially learning to “lighten up”, living in that shiny haze where everyone feels immortal. really, it’s just a song about cocaine.
My new album Lover is out now. Swipe 👈 to read my thoughts on it. Much love.
This woman taught me to play piano. Jan Music. Last name literally music. I was a terrible student. “LOVER” is out at midnight.
1 day /// “Someone’s deciding my future. Someone decided my past. Somebody said man, it’s all in your head. You’re the only one making this last.”
2 days /// “My heart beats like a tattoo on an old tin drum, rolling down a grey gravel road from a house that used to be my home before the hard times.”
3 days /// “You just wanted to be somebody, just wanted to understand why you had to be so lonely. Did you have to be? Do you have to be? ‘Cause now you’re running on empty, now you’re running out of time. You used to be so hungry, how’d you get so tired?”
4 days /// “I don’t need no lover, I need a mother to come to my room.”
I wrote this in an unapologetic attempt to get someone back. This is essentially my Lloyd Dobler at the window with Peter Gabriel on his boombox, desperately vulnerable in his trench coat and high tops.
Thanks to all the homies who contributed to this one:
I’m desperate for a message, calling out your name
I’m sending up a raven and a dove
Trying to quell the panic rising in my chest
Like a mother at a missing persons desk
She was ghosting on a high note, like a halo from a gun
She disappeared in smoke in the last light of the sun
I was burning my eyelids trying to stare into the blaze
Trying to see around the edges but the light got in my way
