A little Yupo sketch of a girl who can just barely reach the pedals and is ridiculous allergic to bugs 😂🚲🦟
This little fellow popped out of yesterday’s trash collection pile from #therealmofreclaimed . He’s made primary from several bobber-thingys and lures, and has a little overcoat + tam o'shanter I tailored out of some plastic sheeting. His hair is made out of rope I frayed and combed out 💇🏼♂️ #letsmakerainbows #outofrecycling #mabgraves #trashtag
Today I found almost NOTHING on my little beach! A couple bottle caps and a washed up label. It felt good to see the shore so clean, but the hunter inside me was not satisfied- so I moved inland and started scouring the streets!
Okay, I got several questions about my traveling studio, so here you go:
In the past year I’ve had to be away from my studio more than I’ve ever been in my entire life. The anxiety I felt leaving my studio is hard to describe...I spend sleepless nights before I began a trip, trying to carefully and methodically think through everything I would need to take with me so I could work on the go. I decided to make myself a travel-sized studio that contained a little bit of all the things I use daily, so I wasn’t packing new bags each time I left. It’s been the BEST medicine for that desperately home-sick-hermit anxiety because all I have to do is grab my little “doctors bag” and I know I’ll have whatever I need for any mad inspiration that takes hold. The contents of the case vary slightly depending on what I’m working on (sometimes containing extra sewing or needlefelting things) but the following are the absolute essentials that are always inside: My sketchbook, @alvindrafting pencils, replacement lead, eraser, a tiny bit of rope, my @trekell_art_supplies brushes, watercolor half pan set, tiny colored pencil set, paper, blenders, a small brush for scrubbing, miniature measuring tape and pliers, slim wire cutters, scissors, screwdriver, sandpaper, a tiny jar for paint water and a small cloth for spills, latex gloves, a dropper, a small cutting board, tweezers, a crochet hook, emergency tea rations, a few rubber bands that double as hair ties and makeshift clamps (bobby-pins work well for that too) a sewing needle, a wing of thread, cotton pads, q-tips, a tiny tin for nausea meds and Benadryl, some specimen collection bags, a couple pouches to hold things in, and the a set of tiny bottles of the glues and solvents I use constantly.
I’ve flown all over the country with the case and never had TSA blink! #travelingartist #travelingstudio #mabgraves #suppliesiuse #supplyseekers #trekellproteam #mabmaticpencils
Do you know what this is? It’s Trash! Today on my walk I passed by a little ice cream/coffee shop. The bin outside was overflowing, and I had a bag and gloves with me, so I figured I might as well help out. A little girl who had been sitting on a bench with her mom came over to help me, and I told her what I’ve been doing. She was so sweet 😭💕 All around I noticed little spoons and coffee stir sticks. The sticks gave me the idea. I brought them back, soaked them clean, then made this little crate. I always travel with a few essential art supplies, so luckily I was equipped with scissors, glue, and my watercolor palette. This crate is made from 19 stir sticks. I used paper from my sketchbook to make the labels, and the barnacles are drops of glue I let dry, then painted with watercolors (as well as 5 real ones I found on collected trash yesterday). Everything discarded has the potential to be something new. I want to see what YOU guys make out to rescued materials! I made us all a hashtag for our own reclaimed realm; #theRealmofReclaimed

I gave myself a challenge: 1 hour on my walk to collect every tiny piece of trash I could find, then bring it back and try to make something out of it. My finds would dictate the piece, so it was like searching for the clues to a mystery the whole time. Here’s what I made; my little “Sea Saver.” She’s made out of bottle caps and plastic forks, sunglasses, and bobber-thingys wrapped in strips of dryer sheets. Her hair is cut and styled from nylon rope and her dress is an edgy construction-tape couture with an elegant cigar-band sash. It was really fun, and I was amazed at how many perfect little pieces appeared when I focused my mind on them. I think most things in life are a matter of attitude, and the lucky thing is; we can choose our attitudes. It’s easy to feel angry and get dark about humanity, but I don’t like to choose those feelings. When I’m cleaning up beaches, I’m focused on all the other people around the world in the exact same instant doing the exact same thing with me. I pretend I’m a hunter, and feel a fierce sense of glee every time I spot a color or a shape that doesn’t belong. We can do this. You, and me, and all of us. We can do it, and if we make it fun, it can be a little less scary 🌈🌈🌈 #trashtag #letsmakerainbows #outofrecycling #reducereuserecycle #theRealmofReclaimed
New-wave beach combing 🌈 If there’s one thing I know deep inside my soul, it’s that the Sea is watching and she doesn’t forget. Sea Karma is real, y’all. I’m finishing up the second draft of my book right now in my quiet, deserted writing place. When I’m writing I try to walk for an hour or so each day to clear my mind. This trip, I decided to take gloves and bags to the shore and make a new game out of collecting only the things that don’t belong there. Each day, I come back with at least two trash bags filled. Yesterday as I hefted my bags and turned, there was a tiny perfect banded tulip shell (my favorite) waiting just steps away, glinting as if to say “thank you”. I picked it up and brought it back to my room and it’s going to be my companion while I write. Before I head home I’ll return it to the Sea, just to make sure she can feel how deeply I care about her. Will you join me? Let’s make preservation something fun and creative and see if we can spark a flame 🌈 #letsmakerainbows #outofrecovery #oceanrecovery #reducereuserecycle #seakarma #atlanticocean #theRealmofReclaimed

Trying out some blue 0.5mm lead in my @alvindrafting pencils while listening to Cryptid podcasts and sketching Tanith versions of Hodags and Snallygasters. I know I have a lot of #supplyseekers out there always curious, so here’s a little product review of the blue @pentel_official lead if it’s something you’ve been thinking of trying:
I like this lead. It seems strong and doesn’t snap too easily as long as you don’t feed it out too far. It covers very smoothly on hot-press watercolor paper and responds to a blending stub which was quite a delight. I can’t seem to build up a ton of tone, so to achieve the darker values I wanted I subbed in some regular graphite. They blended well with no issue! I haven’t tried it on my pet paper (Yupo Translucent by @legionpaper) but since working with Yupo is all about building the tones, I have a feeling this lead is better suited to drier paper with more tooth. The eraser works with this lead, but not completely, so I’d sketch lightly and clean up your lines before you build them. I would definitely recommend this lead if you’re wanting to play around sketching in different hues. It’s much drier and more versatile than a colored pencil and being able to mechanically feed it rather than having to sharpen every few minutes is SO nice! #suppliesiuse #artsupplies #draftingpencils #cryptids #thetaleoftanith
We had a misty dawn this morning for Ransom’s first day back to school.
He’s off to Hogwarts!
I made him a Nimbus 2000 out of an old broom my pal @drewendicott gave me. I took the battered old broom and soaked the bristles in a big pot of boiling water, then brushed them with a wire brush till they were smooth and straigh. Once they were dry I gave them a light spray of antique gold paint. I sanded the handle to a silky sheen and gave it a coat of stain and a mineral oil finish. We can’t send young wizards hither and yon without reliable transportation after all! #firstdayofschool #backtoschool #hogwarts #broomride #nimbus2000 #ransompotter #auntieshavethebestjobs #anamericanaunting
Can you feel it in the air? I checked on the accidental pumpkin patch yesterday and mystery tentacles are coiling all around the abandoned chicken coop. White gourds like bleached bundt cakes are dotted everywhere. I felt that familiar tingling anticipation; School is starting, Fall is on the horizon and that means #mabsdrawlloweenclub is coming! Everyone I work with knows one thing: don’t even try to schedule me in October. That’s the month I give to you guys. It’s my tithe and giving back to the art community. Any artist, any medium, any skill level is welcome to join. This year, I’m going to try to have the list out way earlier so people who want to can plan ahead, and artists who’s mediums require extra prep can join in without being left behind. I’m aiming for September 1st for the list drop. That being said- anyone have list requests? I try to keep the prompts simple so beginners don’t get overwhelmed and veterans can come back each year, push their boundaries and see how they’ve grown. Last year I threw in some tricky ones (like “Laboratory”) and was BLOWN AWAY by how insanely cool everyone’s art was. Post your favorite prompts and any ideas/suggestions for new ones below and I’ll get cracking on the list!
