  • Addressed brothers and sisters at the @ntucsingapore National Delegates’ Conference this morning. I have been attending these for more than 20 years! This year’s conference is special because it marks the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Modernization Seminar, a pivotal moment for both the NTUC and the @PAPSingapore.

I spoke about how the NTUC started, and its symbiotic relationship with the PAP. As the government worked to create growth and prosperity, the Labour Movement has played its part, advancing workers’ interests and ensuring that they enjoy the fruits of their labour. So we have grown and thrived together, seen through crises, and improved our lives.

We live in uncertain times. The PAP government will continue working closely with the NTUC to deliver on our fundamental objective: to ensure that workers and their families continue to make progress and have better lives!

  • One of my most enjoyable events every year is the PCF Sparkletots Graduation Ceremony – the performances by the children, the pride of parents witnessing their children reaching this milestone, and the teachers who are happy yet sad to see their students leave and embark on the next step of their education journey.

This year the students put up a charming performance inspired by #SGBicentennial. For generations, Singaporeans have worked hard to ensure a better future for their children. We will continue to do this – be bold in our ambitions and dream bigger for Singapore, so our children can reach for the sky and fly the flag high. – LHL ([1,2,5] Photo by me, [3,4,6-7] MCI Photos by Clement)

If you have attended an #SGSecure Roadshow, you would be familiar with this response of what to do in the event of a terror attack.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My fellow AMK GRC advisors and I got to practise this at today’s roadshow at Ang Mo Kio Central. We also toured the experiential zone and went through a simulated terror attack in a cinema.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The SGSecure movement is now in its third year. @mhasingapore and the Home Team have worked hard to reach out to communities and prepare the public in case the worst should happen. It reminds us that we all have a part to play during an emergency. Let us Stay Alert, Stay United, and Stay Strong! – LHL

  • Sat down for a dialogue at the 50th anniversary of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry (JCCI) yesterday. For the last 50 years, Japanese companies in Singapore have made vital contributions to our economy, and weathered economic challenges together with us.⠀
⠀
Singapore and Japan are both mature economies with rapidly ageing populations. We are adapting our economy and policies to address these challenges, and learning from Japan on this front. I spoke about this and other issues such as China’s role in the global trading system, the importance of free trade and multilateralism, and how we are encouraging Singaporeans to have more babies!⠀

  • Welcomed President @jokowi to the Istana today for the yearly Leaders’ Retreat. This is our first retreat after his re-election.

Singapore-Indonesia bilateral ties are warm and strong. Cooperation is extensive, across the economic, people-to-people, and security sectors. President Jokowi and I agreed to work on some long-standing issues and to find durable, mutually-beneficial solutions for them.

We have built a relationship of trust and cooperation during President Jokowi’s first term. I look forward to deepening our relationship with him and his team during his second term. 🇸🇬 🇮🇩 – LHL ([1, 3] MCI Photos by Betty Chua, [2,4] MCI Photos by Clement)

  • Sat down with @CNN’s @fareedzakaria for an interview when I was in New York last week.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We spoke on the situation in Hong Kong, as well as US-China relations and how it affects the rest of the world. If US-China relations are not stable and not amicable, it is much harder for all of us. – LHL

  • It was a very special evening last night. President @halimahyacob and her husband, Mr Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, hosted a celebration at the Istana to mark the finale of a year-long commemoration of the Istana's 150th anniversary.⠀
⠀
Singaporeans from all walks of life joined Puan Noor Aishah, wife of our first president Encik Yusof Ishak, Mrs Urmila Nathan, the wife of former president, the late Mr S. R. Nathan, and former President Tony Tan and his wife Mary, at the Istana for an evening of live musical performances and food. The night’s events culminated in the Istana’s first-ever light show, projected on the facade of the Istana main building.⠀
⠀
Since it was completed in 1869, the Istana has hosted countless guests from near and far, and has been the site of many historic moments and diplomatic engagements. It stands proudly today as one of Singapore’s oldest heritage buildings, and as a distinguished institution of our nation.⠀
⠀
In this meaningful Bicentennial year, when we commemorate the past and set our sights ahead, I hope we will celebrate our history and continue building upon it. The world will probably look quite different by the time the Istana next celebrates its next major milestone, but I am confident that Singapore will persevere and progress. – LHL⠀

  • Spent a fun morning with kids and their families at the annual PCF Family Day. The theme this year was ‘Together for our Future’, an apt one for our #SGBicentennial year.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We all play a part in building Singapore, and it is our responsibility to give our young every opportunity to succeed. Our young children are why we make so many long-term plans – for Singapore, but actually for them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
One of the things we are doing is providing more childcare spaces. Last year, we converted 50 PCF Kindergartens to full-day childcare centres. We will convert another 80 within the next 4 years.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We are looking at new approaches, too! One new PCF centre, in Radin Mas, will share the space with a nursing home, so that young and old can bond across generations. The young can interact with the seniors and learn from their experiences, and the older folks can help keep an eye on them as well!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every generation builds on the foundations left by the previous generation, and leaves a better home for the next. I hope we can continue working together, to build a brighter future! – LHL⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Enjoyed an evening of splendid and rousing performances under the baton of Maestro Tsung Yeh at the @singaporechineseorchestra’s fundraising gala dinner yesterday.⠀
⠀
The SCO just came back from their tour in Europe, performing their unique Nanyang music to rapturous applause and standing ovations. We were treated to a number of pieces from their tour, as well as compositions based on local songs such as “Singapura, Sunny Island” to commemorate our Bicentennial. Proud that the SCO has cultivated a strong following of its music locally and abroad.⠀
⠀
Also delighted that the SCO raised $1.25 million this year! Many thanks to the donors for their generous contributions, and the fundraising committee for their efforts in keeping Chinese arts and culture flourishing. I am confident the SCO will continue to soar to greater artistic heights! – LHL⠀

  • Since I was in the western part of Singapore for the Tuas Port groundbreaking, I paid a visit to Sultan Shoal – a speck of an island smaller than a football pitch.

Located 5.5km from the mainland, between Jurong Island and the upcoming Tuas Port, it is home to a 124-year-old lighthouse, a man-made lagoon, and the old PSA holiday chalets.

The light in the Sultan Shoal Lighthouse originally comprised a cluster of three single wick oil lamps. Now, it has an LED beacon that uses solar power. Automated, and managed by a lean team from MPA, the beacon guides ships and mariners safely into our harbour and beyond. – LHL

  • Happy Children’s Day to all our kids! I hope you’re enjoying your day with your friends and family.⠀
⠀
@gov.sg made this video of Zubir Said’s Children’s Day song, ‘Semoga Bahagia’. It takes a fond look back at the joys of childhood and recalls nostalgic memories of Singapore in the 80s. ⠀
⠀
Beyond education, it is the enduring friendships we make during our schooling days that we carry with us through our lives and, for some of us, pass down to the next generation. I hope that you study and play hard, and build lasting friendships with one another. ⠀
⠀
Have a good long weekend ahead. :) – LHL
