It has been a while since I’ve posted core/DR (Diastasis Recti) work.
-
After having the twins my abs were wrecked; BUT instead of it getting down, I worked my butt off to figure out how to retrain my core (which literally felt like the Bermuda Triangle).
-
The best part, my inversions and yoga practice are getting stronger than ever! Also thanks to teaching @onepeloton &
cross training on the bike & tread.
-
Try these core moves before a yoga practice, bike ride or run. If you have DR keep your head down if you feel like it’s too much or you see coning.
-
🎥 sped up...take your time, move slow and with connection and control.
-
▪️Loop a band around your wrists, plant your feet flat on the floor, scoop your abs in and up and press out as you roll halfway down and come back up to sit tall.
▪️Lower all the way down, work on taking your arms overhead pressing out against the band as you draw your abs in and soften your ribs down. Keep your pelvis neutral.
▪️Wrap the band around your feet and press one foot out at a time keeping back flat abs engaged front ribs knitting towards each other.
▪️Optional lift your head up as you extend one leg at a time. This personally helps me engage my upper abs; but if you don’t have the strength yet or feel your abs pushing out, keep you head down.
▪️Slide the band up above the knee come in to bridge and work on engaging the core, pelvis level as you extend one leg at a time.
▪️Clams
▪️Banded bird dog press one leg back at a time.

If you don’t have s band, all of these exercises can still be performed.

  • I just found the only picture I have of me with the World Trade Center.

I moved to NYC in 1994. I’ve lived here longer than anywhere else. I love this city more than anywhere in the world. It’s my home.
-
I always lived downtown, first LES then Wash SQ area; but for one year of my life in 2001, I moved to Westchester with my then fiancée.
-
I was teaching a yoga class at the Westchester Country Club to an amazing group of women. After the first class, someone walked in and said a plane just flew in to the World Trade Center.
-
We all looked at each other in dismay; and I went home to sit in front of the television for the rest of the day in disbelief.
-
Three of my students from that class, lost their husbands who worked at Cantor Fitzgerald. So hard to even talk about or write about still.
-
I moved back in to the city alone in 2002. I continued to commute to Westchester to teach yoga to that group of women who needed support of any kind.
-
I always think of them on this day; and pray for everyone who lost a loved one on 9/11. I hug my boys and loved ones a little harder; and never take for granted my family and friends, or this incredible city.

I am always happy to do yoga with my boys, not just to show them the poses; but to help them find their inner warriors & guides.
-
So they can learn to be strong and resilient, empathetic and kind. They can learn to rely on themselves and listen to their gut; and learn to listen to others and be ok with asking for help.
-
The physical practice of yoga is amazing for strength, stability, focus, flexibility, etc. and that’s great for them too..but what I really love is seeing how they can connect with their breath and bodies and be more aware of how we all connect with each other and the universe.

Some fun poses to do with your kids:

🔹Warrior 2
🔹Side triangle
🔹Downward dog
🔹Dog split (we call it peeing dog)
🔹Plank (even better with a partner 😉)

  • This yogi loves yogurt! Seriously every single day, I eat a yogurt. Sometimes, I put them in the freezer and let them chill a little bit and have one for dessert😋!

I especially ♥️ the new #TruBlendByFAGE @FAGE which has high protein, no added sugar and no sweeteners and is the best breakfast. It's creamy and delicious! Also, a yummy afternoon snack or even creamy bedtime treat.

  • Arms & abs!

Here is a quick yoga strength workout that targets the upper body & core. -
In my @onepeloton power yoga 💪🏻classes I like to add fun strength moves in like these.
-
These moves help with chaturanga, arm balances, side planks and even inversions like handstand etc.
-
🔹Start on all fours and slide your knees slightly back connect with your deep core by taking a few breaths and drawing the abs in and up on the exhale
🔹Bend elbows straight back and lower down on an inhale, on an exhale push up keep elbows narrow and imagine squeezing grapefruit between shoulder blades
🔹Add alternate shoulder taps
🔹Then alternate lifting one arm up
🔹Lie on your side with the bottom arm wrapped around the waist and press with the upper arm to target triceps
🔹Finish in side forearm plank and twist the top arm under (I grabbed one of the @onepeloton weights from the bike you can use 1-2 lbs or no weight at all).

Come back to all fours repeat push ups and do the opposite arm and side.

  • Back to school backpack 🎒 yoga workout!

Do you guys find it harder or easier to exercise once school starts?
-
I personally get a boost in energy & feel extra excited about a routine and setting goals alongside my little 1st grader👦🏼.
-
And even if you’re crunched for time, it’s always possible to find 10,15,20 minutes a day to move! You’ll feel soooo much better and be sooo much more productive!
-
I never want my boys to lose their joy for movement. All of my beginner, 10 minute yoga classes & yoga basics library poses @onepeloton are great for busy people.

If you’re a parent you can let your kids join in or try this fun little routine with them:

🔹Squats and heel raises
🔹Warrior 2
🔹Warrior 3
🔹Tree pose
🔹Backpack rows (can also be done with weights or a band)
🔹Backpack push-ups
🔹Backpack burpees/sun salutations with lunge twists

And always make sure to high five 🙌🏻 yourself & workout partner at the end!!!
