  • What didn't this woman do? As a singer, dancer, actress, composer, writer, and activist, the one thing she did not do was give up when things were HARD. Among the laundry list of other things, she was a Pulitzer nominated poet whose works depicted black beauty, female strength and empowerment, and social justice for all. She was not afraid to be authentic and honest in her writings, or in her life. And for that, I am forever grateful. We can all see ourselves in her work and I consider her one of my heroes. (She-roes!!) I had the pleasure of speaking with her once in an interview and I was more nervous than I had ever been in an interview ever before in my life!! She remains an inspiration. #ICanDoHardThings

  • Amelia Earhart was born a rebel, which is why I love her so much! She was out there playing basketball and taking auto repair classes when that was absolutely not the social norm. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic and soared past any gender stereotypes that people threw her way. She helped pave the way for women, and shows us that you cannot let the opinions of others stop you from pursuing your dreams. #ICanDoHardThings

  • What did Elizabeth Blackwell do when no medical colleges would accept women? She created her own damn medical college! Elizabeth Blackwell was called names, discriminated against, and overcame extreme obstacles on her path to becoming a physician. She showed us all that HARD work and determination can move mountains, and eventually gained respect from the same people who had shown resistance by graduation first in her class. She used her degree for good and gave back to women who could not afford medical treatments. Elizabeth Blackwell is an example of what we are capable when we believe in ourselves. #ICanDoHardThings

  • The one and only Rosa Parks, the epitome of courage, dignity, and determination. This bad-ass woman changed the course of history. When the world wanted to tear her down, Rosa Parks did something HARD and she did not give in to the opposition. She stood her ground for what she believed in when she refused to give up her seat, and this act sparked an entire revolution. My favorite part about the #ICanDoHardThings movement is not only giving credit to the accomplishments of these inspirational women, but seeing how they accomplished great things with bravery.

  • Marie Curie leaves behind a legacy as a leading figure in science, but more importantly she serves as a role model for women like you and I. She’s the first woman ever to receive a Nobel Prize, and she remains the only person to have ever received two. Talk about HARD things! Not only did she coin the term radioactivity and lead an effort for female recognition within the sciences, but she also built up other strong women. When she was young, her family did not have the resources to send their children to school, so she worked for 5 years doing odd jobs to support her sister’s education. Thank you, Marie, for showing women all over the world that we all can do HARD things, and we can build up other women in the process. #ICanDoHardThings

  • Ella Fitzgerald performed at top venues all over the world, and packed them to the hilt. Her audiences were as diverse as her vocal range. They were rich and poor, made up of all races, all religions and all nationalities. In fact, many of them had just one binding factor in common - they all loved her. You know I don’t have to list her awards and accolades. Rather, I would like to note through all the adversities she faced in her early life (which you should totally dig into further, to include watching the numbers and the door of a brothel), she figured out how to make her way and let her light shine. And she did so with beauty and grace and enormous talent. Her legacy has left a mark on music as a whole – and for that, I am eternally grateful. #ICanDoHardThings

  • One of the many things that I hope you’re inspired by from the #ICanDoHardThings campaign is learning about our sisters from all walks of life who have done some pretty HARD THINGS with dignity and grace. Mae C. Jemison is the first African-American female astronaut. In 1992, she flew into space aboard the Endeavour, becoming the first African-American woman in space. In addition to that incredible feat, she’s a doctor, scientist, and continues to teach for the next generation of leaders.

  • Do you want to talk about HARD THINGS? Look no further than the impact of Susan B. Anthony’s hard work and dedication. One of the many things I love about this incredible woman is that from an early child, she believed that everyone was equal under God. She spent her entire life working for women’s rights by being of the most visible leaders of the women’s suffrage movement. Because of all the HARD THINGS she did throughout her life, the passage of the 19th Amendment happened in 1920. We all thank you, Ms. Susan. #ICanDoHardThings

  • Taking a classy page from the @johnmayer handbook. He posted a wonderful praise and credit to the folks who made his latest single happen. (#iguessijustfeellike go listen right now!) I loved it and promptly promised to lift the idea. (Which I told him I would do:-) It takes brilliant talented musicians and engineers and producers and mixers and masterers to make a song come to life! And it takes a wonderful, creative team to get it in your ears and hands.
Thank you all for listening to “I Can Do Hard Things” and letting it be a part of your story. And thank you to the players and peddlers who help me tell it!!!

  • To kick things off with #ICanDoHardThings – highlighting kick-ass women who have done HARD THINGS - is none other than Harriet Tubman. She risked her life to lead family members and hundreds of other slaves to freedom and helped the Union Army during the war, working as a guide, a spy and a commanding officer, among many other HARD roles.
I recently had the honor of joining @focusfeatures in telling a part of her story. @cynthiaerivo, @leslieodomjr, and @janellemonae made fantastic performances in bringing Harriet’s story to life on screen. Stay tuned as you will get to see it soon!
Ms. Tubman is an American icon and shero. Her story continues to inspire generations of Americans with her bravery and bold action in her fight for freedom, human rights and civil rights. She remains a powerful reminder that we can do HARD THINGS to change the world.

  • Over the past few days I’ve been reading your beautiful words about how “I Can Do Hard Things” has moved you and made you feel seen and empowered. As a songwriter, I could not receive a bigger encouragement! Since it is also Women’s History Month, I thought this song could be the anthem for so many incredible women – past and present – who have done (and continue to do) HARD THINGS. So, every day this month, I’ll be highlighting influential, kick-ass, women. I hope that you are tickled to do the same, and open your hearts to this song, and share with all those you know who can do hard things. #ICanDoHardThings #womenshistorymonth #internationalwomensday #iwd2019 #womenempowerment #womeninspiringwomen
