In Jack Whitaker, we lost one of the great men in American sports over the last century. Jack was a fantastic journalist, a legend in sportscasting, and, I am proud to say, a dear friend. Jack and I spent a lot of time together, whether it was during his time with CBS or ABC Sports, or when he hosted the Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf matches. Whenever we were together, it always turned out to be something special.
I will never forget the 1982 @usopengolf at Pebble Beach. We were standing behind the 18th green, just after I finished my final round and had the clubhouse lead. Jack was interviewing me, saying what a privilege it was to be a part of my time and to watch me win that day a fifth US Open title. About then, a roar went up, and we saw on the TV monitor Tom Watson running around the 17th green after he had chipped in for birdie, on his way to winning that US Open.
That was just one of many very special moments I shared with Jack. We played golf together many times, and there were countless times I cherished when we would just talk. Jack Whitaker was just a very special man, who Barbara and I will greatly miss.

Might say I was tickled yellow! (More on that later)... It was my 1st visit to Endicott, NY, and the @dsgopen, and I could not have been treater better! Never had a chance to play here on the @pgatour or @pgatourchampions, but made up for some lost time in one day. As part of the #UHSGolfExpo, I had the opportunity to get a tour from @nyuhsinc President & CEO John Carrigg of the Wilson Medical Center NICU. Then at En-Joie Golf Course, I caught up with some friends on the Champions Tour; watched my son Gary play a few holes (best of luck this week, son!); and was warmly welcomed on the 18th green by a thousand of my closest friends for a sunset Q&A with longtime friend David Marr III. The Dick’s Sporting Goods Open turned the day into a @playyellow4kids theme, and with donations and sales of #PlayYellow @aheadusa hats, Tournament Director John Karedes punctuated the visit with a surprise check for our @nchcf! Thank you Endicott for your kindness, hospitality & generosity!

Happy for all 25 @kornferrytour grads who earned @pgatour cards Sunday in Portland. But this young man, Bo Hoag, is special to my wife @barbaranicklaus and me! His grandfather Bob (pictured here around the 1974 opening of Muirfield Village Golf Club) was a lifelong best friend, one of the founders of @muirfieldvillagegolfclub, and was the club's first chairman.
I've known Bo his entire life, watched him grow as a person and a player. Played some golf with him, and Barbara definitely fed him! Bo was a good player for @ohiostathletics, has played well since but just hasn't quite gotten there. Now, at 31, he's finally got a chance to go to the Big Dance!
Barbara and I reached out to Bo on Sunday night after he won the @portland_open for his first victory. But we want to again send our heartfelt congrats to him for taking this next huge step in his career and life! Very happy for Bo, and I have a good feeling about how he will do.
One thing is certain, Bo’s grandfather—Hoagie, as we called him—is looking down, smiling upon him!

60 years after a 19-year-old Jack William Nicklaus got his name on the #USAmateur trophy, I've tripled the odds for it happening this week at @pinehurstresort. And didn't even have to regain my amateur status. 😉
You might say this is my "featured group" in the 119th US Amateur Championship, and while I will have my eyes on Jack, William and Nicklaus, I want to wish ALL the young men best of luck this week! 🏆
9 years to the day, still shaking my head over this putt during @harborshoresgolf grand opening!🤦🏼♂️
Was just trying to not lose a friend in the superintendent. “No wedges here John!”

#FBF: One of the highlights of our summer so far was a trip Barbara and I, along with some friends, took last month to Europe. We went from England (@wentworth_club and @wimbledon) to Italy, and then we punctuated the trip with a stop in Portugal and a visit with our friends at @montereiresort in the beautiful Eastern region of the Algarve.
This was my first time back to Monte Rei since finishing the golf course more than a decade ago. We returned to look at how the North Course had matured and evolved since opening in 2007, and to also look at a new piece of property for the South Course. I had taken a quick glance at the site years ago, only to find a beautiful, dramatic piece of property that should produce a golf course to rival the first.
We had a great 2 days with Ramon and Carlos Lopez, and their team. I found their passion has not waned in the last 12 years. They are still committed to quality, and are excited about the potential of the new South Course at Monte Rei. Working with longtime #NicklausDesign European Design Associate, Dirk Bouts, I think we have produced a really good routing. We look forward to watching the design evolve into a course that should open in 2021.
The hospitality shown to our group, which included friends Jack and Cherie Lucks, and #HaleIrwin and his wife Sally, was fantastic! Our group was treated to a special Portuguese dinner, which was terrific, much enjoyed and much appreciated. We could not have been more warmly welcomed. The only regret was having to leave so soon!
A sign in our kitchen says “The first 50 years are the toughest.” We are now 2 weeks into our 60th year of marriage, and I promise you it's not true! It was fun to sit with Barbara during the @memorialgolf to record the newest @pgatour podcast and reflect on how our life-shaping partnership started. We even got some of the facts right! 😉

Barbara and I are deeply saddened with the passing of Nick Buoniconti. We have both known, admired and respected Nick for many years. It was his heart that inspired him to play football bigger than his God-given size, and what led to a @profootballhof career in the @nfl with the @miamidolphins. But it was his heart that made him larger than life off the field. Nick made family a priority in his life, and Nick passionately proved countless times over the many decades — especially since his son Marc was paralyzed in 1985 — that family is THE priority in his life. His mission to find a cure for paralysis and to one day see Marc walk again was fueled by the unconditional love a father has for his child, and a son’s unwavering determination. We can best honor Nick Buoniconti’s legacy by continuing to work toward this cure — for Marc and so many others!
Nick was such a special man who was always giving to and helping others. He was a special friend to all, and we loved him. Nick Buoniconti was a treasure! Barbara and I send our heartfelt sympathy, love and prayers to the Buoniconti family, his extended family at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and the @buonicontifund, and to all whose lives Nick touched and will forever touch through his work!
While our hearts hurt today, I think the note Barbara sent to Marc and his family should be remembered:
"Death is a heartache no one can heal.
Love is a memory no one can steal.” 🙏🏼 (Photo from The Buoniconti Fund Celebrity Golf Invitational at The Bear’s Club courtesy of @jimmandeville / @nicklauscompanies)
July has been a great month for sports in Europe! From @wimbledon to @letourdefrance to elite golf, highlighted by @theopen, #SeniorOpen, @evianchamp, and, for me, @londongolfclub! Can’t let July end without offering heartfelt congrats on the 25th anniversary of the @nicklauscompanies’ first 36-hole design in the UK!
Heard it was a terrific anniversary party, with high marks from member & @dancingabc judge Len Goodman, and @bbcstrictly star Anton du Beke (both shown here). Thanks to London GC for the wonderful memories, and best wishes for making many more! (Anniversary event photos courtesy of Rikki Stanley and London GC)
Happy Anniversary, to my darling wife, @barbaranicklaus! ❤️Today is a very special day, as Barbara and I celebrate our 59th anniversary and begin our 60th year of marriage. I can’t imagine anyone luckier or more blessed to have found a girl like Barbara — the love of my life!
Barbara and I are just going to celebrate quietly with some family this evening — catch an "early bird" dinner, of course. 😉
We are blessed to have such great kids, who enjoy spending time together as a family!
Nice going @gtnick1!
My son Gary qualified today for this week’s Senior Open Championship presented by @rolex at @royallythamgolf. With his son @gt.nicklaus on the bag, Gary grabbed a spot at @hillside_gc, where I played my first European event in May 1962. Proud of Gary! He’s playing better and better every tournament, and hope he has a great week! (Photos courtesy of @jkbassett)
