Once a year I get to host the literary awards at premier house, and it’s such a treat. Some of our finest writers in one place. Thank you for your words, your stories, your inspiration....and for posing for obligatory photos!
Massive fail on my part on the photo front today. Visited the Air force team out at Whenuapai today, including an amazing group of young people who were part of the LSV (Limited Service Volunteer) programme, but I only managed to remember to take a pic as we were leaving. Special thanks to the young people who joined LSV via work and income who shared their stories with me. It may only be a 6 week course but as one young man said to me “I was a bit lost, this helped me find my accelerator”
A ribbon cutting (with glittery scissors no less) to open 30 new transitional housing units for Monte Cecilia in South Auckland. These units will provide shelter for 120 families a year. I’m standing next to Sister Mary Foy who has been helping to provide emergency housing in NZ for more than 30 years - a true treasure.
Hosting the Prime Minister of the Netherlands for his quick visit to New Zealand, and running into old school friends along the way. I may have unfortunately reinforced the myth that we all know each other...but hopefully also confirmed that we’re very friendly hosts. Thanks for the visit PM @minpres And for joining us for such an excellent climate event.
Highlight of my day - seeing this hive of activity in the education truck (Tuia Mātauranga) we launched today. The truck will travel alongside the Tuia programme, giving children and young people the chance to learn more about New Zealand history. We launched it this morning but I popped back to see it again this afternoon and it was packed. Full of kids, parents, grandparents, and educators. If you want more information, including how to download the app where you’ll find all the resources inside the truck, visit https://www.tuiaeducation.org.nz/roadshow
It will be hard to describe yesterday with words, so I’ll do it with images. The beginning of Tuia 250 was marked with a fleet of waka coming into Tūranganui-a-kiwa, a pōhiri on the waterfront that included a delegation from French Polynesia, a pōhiri at Te Poho Rawiri Marae where we also acknowledged the passing of the great teacher and navigator, Sir Heke Busby. And finally the day finished with Rongowhakaata and the planting of trees and opening of an exhibition on Tupaia.
Popped into Net Hui to talk about the Christchurch Call to action. There were a few people in the room that have played a huge part in progressing the call - it was a good chance to acknowledge them (and to acknowledge the work we have left to do!)
Special APRA Silver Scroll awards tonight. Not only were the musicians behind Blue Smoke (the first ever record wholly produced in NZ) inducted into the Hall of Fame, the song was performed as it was first written - in te reo maori. Managed to record a snippet for you!
