  • The Water Diviner, Barraba, Australia 
In 2019, drought has continued to grip NSW, Australia. With over %90 of the state in drought Some areas have recorded the lowest January rainfall totals in 100 years, while for many it was the driest in two decades. The extreme heat continues as most of the state recorded the hottest January average in History. 
Farm water supplies remain critically low for many areas in western and southern NSW, much of which is experiencing "intense drought". Although the causes of drought are complex analyses have found an increased likelihood of rainfall deficits related to human caused climate change. There is also some evidence to suggest that widespread and prolonged droughts, like the Millennium Drought, are worse than other droughts in recent centuries, and may have been exacerbated by climate change.

This mural depicts a local water diviner searching for ground water, using a y-shaped twig or rod or two L-shaped ones. Diviners study the landscape of a farm and walk over areas where they suspect the water may be located, ground minerals and magnetic forces force the sticks to cross or be pushed downwards when water is located. Despite many studies claiming the technique is pseudo-science, Diviners continue to be used throughout Australia as a way of finding ground water.

This work was created in regional NSW as a way of bringing tourism into Barraba and stimulating the local economy during the drought. Massive thanks to the Barraba public art committee and the TTTT (tackling tough times together) grant

  • ‘British Tourists in Airport line 1’ 
In 2012 The LNP government in Australia opened an offshore refugee detention centre on the small island nation of Nauru. Nearly 2000 people have been held in the camps for years now in violation of international law. 
The camps were kept under a total media blackout for 4 years and not a single Journalist made it inside from 2012-2016. When the first images (taken from outside the fence of the camp) started to make their way into the media all faces were blurred, stripping the Asylum seekers of their identity and humanity. Many media outlets pushed a narrative that the refugees on Manu’s Island were dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed into Australia despite most having legitimate claims of asylum, the scare campaign has made the issue heavily politicized and polarising within the country. 
In 2017 it was revealed that the majority of illegal immigrants in Australia were actually Visa overstays with 64,000 currently being in the country illegally. With most Visa overstays being from White majority countries like Ireland, Canada and the UK the issue was largely ignored by the media which continued to focus on the 2000 people that had tried to enter the country by boat. 
This painting flips the common media narrative in Australia and turns British tourists into the blurred, faceless villains. Commenting on the history and colonialism in Australia and the hypocracy of Australia’s asylum seeker policies. The work also questions if other groups in Australia could be subject to media vilification if it helped the objectives of big business, the commercial media or certain political parties within Australia.
