  • #Repost. Thanks @yogaglo for the nice reminder about the story how women started practicing yoga. Happy international women’s day!

In the 1930’s, a young Latvian woman named Indra Devi challenged the status quo. Initially rejected by the great yoga master Krishnamacharya, because she was a foreigner and a woman, she refused to give up and was ultimately granted permission to become his student.

She met every challenge set out for her and was asked to become a teacher. Eventually, she opened a studio in Hollywood, helping to popularize yoga as a practice for inner and outer well-being.

Because of Indra Devi, we are inspired to listen to our inner calling against all odds, and strengthened by the knowing that our courage can change the world. 🙏✨

  • From the Chandogya Upanishad 5.1.6-15 (adapted from Upanishads.org)

Once upon a time all the sense organs had a dispute among themselves as regard to who was superior. Each one boasted saying: “I am superior, I am superior.” It went on until finally they all decided to approach Prajapati, their father. They asked him: “Sir, who is the best among us?” Prajapati replied: “He by whose departure the body looks the worst – he is the best among you.” Following his words the organs of Speech, Sound, Sight, Mind departed one at a time for a year and after coming back all noted that the body survived ( although certainly missing each sense). Now, when the prana, or breath was about to depart, all the other senses felt themselves weakening and leaving the body too, so they all gathered round him and said: "Do not depart from us." Then the organ of speech came and said to the Breath, "Sir, that attribute of being most excellent which I possess is thine." So said the eye, the ear and the mind. Hence these (the organ of speech, the eyes, the ears, the mind) are not simply sense organs, but they are all signs of life - the Prana. For Prana alone is all these.

  • Couple more spots left in the mentorship program for teachers with @tatisouzayoga and @ahrensyoga! Starts on Friday!
We asked our teachers a few questions:
.
What’s your ideal student?
.
Someone willing to take risks, unafraid of change, wants to try new methods, respectful of tradition, brings their own gifts unabashedly to their work, seeking feedback and ready for inner reflection.
.
How is your approach similar?
.
Strong sense of ourselves, open to others but unwilling to compromise our beliefs, strong opinions, set high standards and care about quality, teach from the heart and practice what we preach, constantly studying further and excited to keep evolving.
.
How are you different?
.
We implement different methods for holding students’ attention.
.
Summarize your offering together:
.
“Smart with heart”, “intelligent, supportive, and straight forward”
.
