  • Some of those travel essentials I like to talk about (please refer to my previous previous post about the impact of travel - that debate is a while other thing!):
🌈
> bamboo bandaids (I’ve made a poor habit of cutting myself on every single paper possible. I fear, paper has become my enemy!)
> soap (so I can avoid using the hotel’s (or wherever I’m staying) tiny soap)
> reusable square cloths (to remove makeup. I just made it with an old towel)
> macadamia oil (to remove makeup)
> face lotion (it’s freaking awesome, seriously check it out it’s from @biomestores 💚)
> homemade lip balm
> homemade body butter (in a repurposed jar)
> sunscreen (in recyclable/reusable tin)
> bamboo comb (even though I will probably NOT brush my hair!)
> aspirin (I’m prone to headaches and migraines. I get this from my mother!)
> bamboo toothbrush and yeah plastic toothpaste (I don’t brush my teeth with baking soda)
> compostable floss
> reusable coffee cup
> large tin (for takeout food)
> bamboo cutlery
> large water bottle
> a stack of hankies/napkins
♻️
For those of us who are pretty darn lucky to travel (😊), what do you like to bring?
💚

  • Zero waste period! Since I just did a Q&A on cups in my stories, I thought I would talk about it here too. (If you missed my stories, they are saved in my highlights.) I switched to the @letsnixit menstrual cup several months ago and I LOVE it. You guys, no idea why I waited so long! Seriously, it’s so empowering, and freeing, and just the best. I don’t even wear period panties or liners anymore. It’s that great, and that leak proof. Took me a good 3 months to get it down perfectly where I can be backup free, but man, it’s worth the transition. You will never want to use a tampon or pad again! Not only are those often made with plastics, artificial fragrance, and cotton- one of the MOST heavily pesticide laden fabrics, but they will sit in the landfill forever, because of the plastic! Yikes! And plastic tampon applicators have been washing up on beaches. Pretty gnarly right? Do yourself a favor and check out @putacupinit’s 9 question quiz to find a cup that matches your needs! As for the oils, panaway obviously for cramps, but don’t forget clary sage too! My last cycle I had a day with horrific cramps, which is unusual for me. I used 2 drops of clary sage diluted in some carrier oil, and rubbed it across my abdomen. Not only does it have a calming scent, but it stopped my cramps in their tracks! Clary sage is excellent at relieving spasms! I’m constantly amazed at the power essential oils hold. •

  • Good morning 😊☀ This breakfast, to me, is a solid example of an imperfect person making an effort towards #zerowaste.

When you focus on "how can I get this without plastic" it's easy to forget about the stuff we already have. Shop your fridge and pantry first! It doesn't make sense to buy a heap of flours from a bulk store when you have seven half-used packets in the back of the cupboard 🤗 what can you do with those?

This breakfast includes:
⚪ bulk store bought buckwheat flour
⚪ tapioca flour I found in the pantry
⚪ marmalade made by a family friend from her fruit trees
⚪ frozen berries (plastic)
⚪ coconut cream (tin)

I love frozen berries and find them much better value, quality, and lower waste than the "fresh" ones, especially out of season. I've started eating less so they last longer, but haven't managed to let them go completely yet. And while stuff in tins, glass or cardboard are not as good as #zerowaste, they are a very good second best because they can be infinitely recycled without losing quality. Plastic CAN be recycled, but not all of it does, and the pieces that do lose quality until they can no longer be used. Eventually they end up in landfill, or circulating and building up in the eco system in horribly damaging ways... practically forever.

So.. could I have replaced the berries in this meal? Probably.
Raising awareness ... learning ... changing habits ... it's a process that I'm happy to have started, and to be sharing.

Happy weekend to you 💚

  • Part 10
.
.
.
Kenapa begitu?
.
Sebab setiap Orang yg kami temui kebanyakan ngeluhnya rumah berantakan, bukan rumah yg sampahnya belum dipilah 😅 jadi titik krusialnya di problem berbenah dulu.
.
Terus..

*lanjut part 11

  • We've had an amazing day here at Convention! We toured the Production Center and the Member Services call center.
.
We learned loads of great things, but one thing totally blew us away... As of June 21st, the Young Living Production Center became a ZERO WASTE facility, affirming their commitment to the environment. Some amazing examples are these planters, which are made by recycling the blue nitrile gloves the workers wear while HAND BLENDING our blends...(you read that correctly, hand blending! ) 🤯🤯🤯
.
I LOVE this company! .

Tienden a dejarlo áspero, apagado y enredado😥
Y vos..? Probaste? Qué esperas para hacer el cambio?🌟

  • Tonight, I had the opportunity to pitch, Stellar Design Shop to a room full of people. This opportunity was a great way to get funding but also to network and spread the word about the Stellar brand. I was VERY nervous but to be able to tell my story, the brand story and the importance of #sustainablefashion was very important to me and I’m so glad I went through with it. It was an experience I will never forget. Thank you to @blackgirlventures for the opportunity. I had such a great time!

  • Bulk liquid shopping: I do most of my bulk shopping at @integralyoganaturalfoods. This is part of their bulk liquid section. They carry two types of shampoos and conditioners, body lotion, a variety of Dr. Bronner’s castile soaps, laundry detergent, and dishwashing liquid.
...
I used to fill my old shampoo and conditioner bottles here until I switched to bars, and I fill an old soap bottle with castile soap for our foaming hand soap dispensers at home, and an old laundry detergent jug with the laundry detergent (I like using the detergent jug for its nice spout and handy measuring cap). They have pump dispensers if you want a small amount, or you can use the jugs in the back to pour more easily into your large container. I haven’t compared these unit prices to the typical items you would buy at the store, but what I get at IY goes far. You usually dilute castile soap for whatever purpose you’re using it for; the detergent is concentrated as well, so you need less per load of laundry than a normal detergent. I really appreciate having a refill station like this in town! And it’s on my way home from work, so it’s pretty convenient for me to stop by. If you have any questions about these products, or about shopping at IY, let me know below!

  • Why is this rubbish bag significant and deserves a post here? Because it was our 1st rubbish bag for this week!

We last threw out rubbish into the main bin in front of our house on Sunday. And ever since, we only collected this much of physical rubbish in our small dustbin in the kitchen until yesterday (Friday). We used to have like 3 to 4 bags per week. But after we started recycling and most importantly since I started organic composting our leftovers, we reduce to about 1 to 2 bags only per week. And for this week, this was the very 1st rubbish bag that went into the main bin after 5 days. Wohoo! It's an achievment! Actually, we have to bring it out anyway because Little Umayr is still producing his organic thing in the pampers. Hahaha. 😆 So yes, due to smell, we just have to.

Just imagine, how much more we can save the earth if we stop using the disposable diapers and resort to using cloth diapers or napkin for him. But unfortunately I still cannot comply with that. I have time constraint to wash the napkin or the cloth pad and whatnot. Sorry, earth. I feel bad, still. 😔 I know I can do better.

When we only have Izz back then, we used cloth diapers at home and only sent pampers to his babysitter. With only one child at that time, we were still enthusiastic and had ample of time to manage him using cloth diapers. Will try to improve for the better next time insya Allah. Nevertheless, I am still happy with what my family and I have achived so far: reduce physical rubbish, practice recycling and produce our own organic compost. Seriously the feeling is AWESOME! Just by looking at our 1st rubbish of the week, it does lift up my enthusiasm. I know we can do more. We can all save our earth.

We have done our part. Mind to share your story about earth saving activities? 😉 #zerowaste #gogreen #recycle #reduce #organiccompost

  • Another grocery haul.

So little packaging 🥳

Although we forgot we would in fact still have to go to Woolworths for the naan for curry so that’s not pictured.

Veg and coconut milk as always from Harris Farm. Bulk chicken thigh and lamb cutlets from our plastic/package free butcher.

The last photo was from yesterdayish. I used the rest of our homemade bread loaf to make breadcrumbs yesterday, on the premise that I would go via HF and buy some package free bagels for weekend breakky.

Didn’t happen hence the Woolworths Turkish loaf. Also underestimated how much tea and coffee I would want in three days so the 1L from the coop on Wednesday wasn’t enough. Icecream on special so 🥳

No shop at the coop today because I topped up what I could on Wednesday: although now I’m realising we’re running low on salt sooooo😬

First strawberries in forever: if I want to keep buying need to do a @simpleishliving and try get them in my own container at the Sunday farmers market.

A bit over budget- mostly because we had already cut into this weeks grocery budget. But hoping this plus the naan is it for the week.

Best part is 1.5 hours after taking the first pic- majority of it was chopped/prepped for the week and put away🙌🏼🙌🏼

  • GENTE QUE ALEGRIA!! DEU CERTO! Fiz meus paninhos de cera 🐝
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⚠️⚠️ ATENÇÃO TEXTÃO ECOCHATO:♻️♻️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥵 Desde o final do ano passado eu e minha mãe estamos nessa empreitada! Testamos umas 10 receitas diferentes com ceras, resinas, óleos etc.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👩‍🔬Hoje encontramos a receita perfeita: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

  • Peter getting shown how to really feed the Subpod, by some of @little_splendour’s smartest worm watchers!! We love seeing kids drop by and be amazed at how much they know about gardening and composting! Teaching your kids composting at an early age really helps them to understand the food cycle and appreciate where there food waste goes and fresh food comes from! Feed the soil, feed the world! #subpodgrow

  • Here’s a post about sheet sets. Most of them come in these really well constructed plastic containers with high quality zippers. I’ve never been able to throw them away because it seemed like such a waste. Lo and behold I’ve found one really good use for them: small toy organizer/containers! So I beg anyone reading this to reconsider just throwing them in the garbage, they’re quite useful afterall. ☺️ In other related developments, this organic cotton sheet company made a set with an actual fabric bag container which was refreshing! And I’m already thinking this is reusable for travel as almost like a packing cube, or some sort of mini laundry bag for short trips! Excited about the possibilities. #reuse #upcycle #greenfamily #saynotoplastic #dowhatyoucan #toys #freetoyorganizers #stopsingleuseplastic #getcreative #momhacks #frugalmom #reduceplasticwaste #reducewaste #lowwaste #zerowaste

This is so true. Why do we not respect natures wonders the same way we do man made creations. 👨

  • Don’t compost your banana peels just yet! 🍌 Did you know you could use them to remove dust and add shine to your houseplants? (Thank you to my friend @veronicamromero for showing me this trick). Dusty leaves don’t absorb sunlight effectively, so make sure you’re wiping them either way!
.
Ps. I haven’t tried it, but apparently this works on shoes too :-)

  • Zero Waste Store: Since we opened up as a 3 month popup where we made everything out of materials we found in the trash (seriously, out fixtures were hand made using pallets in the trash!) when we decided to make @packagefreeshop permanent we looked to our favorite brothers Josh and Jordan to help to give us a sustainable upgrade. 👍

Josh from @transformingspace built a french cleat system of shelves in his local Pennsylvania shop that does not require any support brackets. The whole thing is completely modular, reusable, and compostable if we ever decide to take it down. We also had completely wood and metal ladders custom built from a company in NYC that has been making rail systems for over a decade! Custom might seem like a lot of extra work, but when it comes to sustainability, making everything locally and having it hand delivered reduces TONS of plastic wrap that would be used by pre-built shelving systems, plus, I think they're sexy AF.
Have you seen our store IRL? Let me know!
PS, fun fact: To build the furniture in our original popup space, I had to use a crowbar to take apart pallets that we found in the trash.
While I was pulling them apart, a piece of wood got into my eye and turned the entire thing fully red and bloody for over three weeks!
If you look at pictures from our launch party, I have my hair over my eye the entire time. It was like that for so long, I actually missed it when it was gone!!! 💁🏻‍♀️
