  • Here's a small throwback from our stall last semester. We had a taste of Korean culture by trying different flavors of kimbaps, a ramyun corner and the popular but messy ddubboki stand.

  • Sometimes an idea seems more delicious in the imagination than in the actual eating. Exhibit A: yang nyum burger.

After tasting Seoul Bistro's new fire burger on my previous visit, I had the brilliant idea of pairing their normal Japa burger with their wing sauces. At least I thought it was brilliant until they pointed out it’s already on the menu! 😛 Well, most of their sauces anyway. Yang nyum (the sweet and spicy sauce) isn’t on that list, which seemed a tragedy cos it’s one of my favourite wing flavours, so one thing led to another and I teed up this off-menu custom order for my next visit.

I’m told that yang nyum (as well as peri peri) isn’t offered because it doesn’t seem to pair right with the burger. I wanted to try it in any case, and upon doing so found that somehow the sauce on this seemed to lean more sweet than spicy, with noticeably less kick than what I remembered of eating yang nyum wings. I thought maybe they’d changed the sauce, but was assured the sauce has remained the same. So, whatever the factors, it just tasted better in my head... thanks to @seoulbistroau for letting me try!

You remember how I raved about the Korean fried chicken I had in Berlin? Thank God that I found an alternative in Düsseldorf which satisfies my cravings until I can come back to Berlin 🙌🏼. The concept of Chimac Plus, as the name already implies, is serving chicken with beer, a popular food & drink combo in South Korea. Although I‘ve known about this restaurant for a long time already, I’ve always been kinda put off by their high prices 😅. But when I was in town around lunch time, I knew I had to use this opportunity to try their chicken at a more accessible price. 
Contrary to their dinner menu, in which there’s a selection of boneless chicken, wings or a whole chicken, the lunch offer only includes wings and karaage (also boneless). But you can also choose the seasoning: either original (without sauce), Yangnyum (sweet & spicy sauce) or Ganjang (soy sauce). I went with Yangnyum wings, while my friend ordered Ganjang karaage. They both are served with potato wedges, coleslaw, rice and pickled radish. And for 9,50€ only, I’d say that’s a pretty good deal! 👌🏼
Our initial reaction was like: Woaaa! 😵 We’ve never had fried chicken with such a crispy coating! Although it was smothered with marinade and the coating was thick, it still had a nice crunch. You can really taste that they only use fresh chicken, because it was extremely succulent, meaty and flavorful. The Yangnyum marinade was delish but could have been a lot spicier to my taste 😂. I actually preferred Ganjang as it was less sweet and had a more unique flavor (maybe it’s also because I was disappointed that Yangnyum didn’t taste as good as Angry Chicken‘s “So So Angry” 😆). Either way, I’d totally recommend Chimac Plus if you’ve always wanted to try Korean fried chicken 👍🏼.

  • SÁNDWICH 423: En todo este año de #365SanguchezPorElMundo donde visitaré 52 ciudades y 33 países, cada semana les mostraré AL MENOS un sándwich vegetariano o vegano, que podrán buscar usando #365Vegetariano o #365NombreDeLaCiudad (en este caso, #365Auckland). Así, estando en mis últimos días en #Auckland, #NuevaZelanda, decidí ir a un restaurante que partió como foodtruck de  sándwiches coreanos, y hoy ya es una de las mejores hamburgueserías de la ciudad: @TigerBurgerNZ.
Toda su carta es mega atractiva. Tienen un #sandwich de pollo frito dos veces, pero el vegetariano me tincó más, así que ataqué el "Dubu": #tofu orgánico frito y glaseado con #yangnyum (el clásico adobo coreano del pollo frito) + maní molido + mu encurtido (el rábano de Corea) + lechuga + mayonesa #gochuyang (la madre de todas las salsas coreanas, a base de ají rojo, pasta de miso y arroz pegajoso o glutinoso), en un pan brioche. CSM. Perdón pero es lo único que me dan ganas de decir. Es que cada mordida fue un festival de sabores. Admito que soy fanático del picante, y cuando encuentro ese picantito adictivo que no te deja pensar y lo único que te dice es "sigue comiendo wn! Sigue comiendo!", quedo feliz todo el resto del día. Y eso me pasó acá. Lo mejor de todo es el glaseado del tofu que viene mezclado con el maní. Esa mezcla picante/salada/dulce, que además es pegajosa pero crunchy por el maní es una bomba. Wow. El tofu mismo admito que no me mató. La fritura era suave, así que se mantenía esa textura medio de quesillo adentro. Creo que una doble fritura como lo hacen con el pollo le vendría increíble. Pero sigamos porque hay más. Es verdad que consistencia de mayonesa nunca sentí, pero el aporte de la mayo gochujang es atómico. Es el picante perfecto. Si hubiese venido un poco más cremoso, ya sería lo más cercano al cielo que hay. Y el pan, aunque no sobresale, sí venía bien tostado y era suave. Mega recomendado.
Nota: 🐽🐽🐽🐽 (4 de 5 = exquisita).
Precio: 14 NZD (y si pagan con tarjeta ONE Black de Banco Security no tienen comisión internacional, ojo ahí).

Holy cluck, these were finger licking good. 👅 Their Korean fried chicken was juicy and tender with the perfect crispy texture on the exterior. They are then tossed in a Secret Savoury Sauce which gave it the perfect hints of spiciness, sweetness and sourness. 😍
