Swamishri met with Catholic Bishop John Markovisky. He was describing church activities to Swamishri, and mentioned that they ran four high schools, a university and a hospital. This interested Swamishri. The activities were similar to what he himself was doing back in India. As one administrator to another he asked the Bishop how he raised funds.
"We have bingo sessions," replied the Bishop.
"Has the Bible given permission to play bingo," Swamishri asked. He was referring to gambling in general.
"There is no such reference," admitted the Bishop.
"Then as a religious organisation, is it appropriate that you pamper the 'something for nothing' weakness of the people by organising bingo. If religious people like us let people play bingo, then youngsters will think that religion has given freedom to gamble. He may only play a dollar now, but in the future will be tempted to stake more. Then he will be enticed to steal for his purposes."
"Man is after all only a human," the Bishop replied. "He needs some sort of entertainment. And anyway it is mostly the elderly who come to play bingo."
"Can't you organise another form of entertainment. If they want a social life they should get together in church. Let him do whatever he wants to do outside, but on church premises such things should not go on. Religion should turn people away from stealing, gambling and drugs."
"Swamiji! Your teachings are very high. One should live by them," said the Bishop.

On the 3 May 1990, Bochasan temple was host to a unique convention, the 'Dalit Mahasammelan.' The convention saw the participation of the Harijan castes, dubbed untouchables by a poisoned orthodox caste system. That the harijans were allowed into the temple and served prasad after the assembly was in itself a revolutionary step. Several other local religious leaders were also invited.
Mahant Baldevdas, a Harijan guru of Jhanjharka Savgunnath, shared the stage with the other leaders. He was invited to lunch with Swamishri. The Harijans represented more than 150 villages scattered across the districts of Kheda, Panchmahal and Vadodara.
In his blessings Swamishri said, "From the very beginning the Hindu religion has not supported discrimination. Hinduism has seen the world as a family. The discrimination we see was a later pollutant. The soul has no family or caste. Every soul has within it the presence of Paramatma. The distinctions of this world are to be forgotten. This is very necessary for the uplift of society and our country. If we work for it we will surely move ahead. You need help but effort will be required on your part. By dropping whatever bad habits you have you will become happy. In God's eyes no one is big or small. These are the beliefs of our mind, not God's. If we are strengthened with dharma then no matter what comes our way we will survive. Lord Swaminarayan did not change the religion of the people but their lives..."
Swamishri's efforts to remove the effects of a delinquent caste system includes educating both the 'higher' castes and the 'lower' castes. The 'higher' must learn to accept the 'lower' on an equal standing, understanding that these humans deserve equal rights. The 'lower' castes must work for their progress. They cannot expect to be accepted by the rest of society if they continue to practice things which modern society regards as obnoxious and primitive.

The foyer was packed, with everyone eagerly awaiting the day's last darshan of Swamishri. The door of Swamishri's room opened, and Swamishri came into view. A chorus of 'Jai's' greeted him. Then to the rhythmic tune of a plate-and-spoon band, Kanu Barot and Ashok Daliya made their way from the middle of the foyer upto where Swamishri was standing. As they carefully sidestepped the seated devotees they sang,
"Dhari amara Shriji Bhagwan, tilak-chandlo emni olkhan;

Muki sharam ne thai naram, pãlishu ame Niyam-dharam..." (Our master is Shriji Maharaj, His trademark is the tilak-chandlo. We will overcome our shyness, be humble and observe our codes of conduct.) When they reached Swamishri, they pulled out a bag full of tilak-chandlo sets. They announced, "Anybody who wants one can come and receive one from Swamishri himself!" Slowly, one-by-one, many came to Swamishri to collect their set. Reinforcing their commitment Swamishri said to everyone, "This is for life. Now there should be no need to remind you." Swamishri's stay in London was memorable for many reasons. But the intensity and love with which he encouraged and inspired young and old alike to apply tilak-chandlo daily was especially memorable. And the devotees, too, responded to this innermost wish of Swamishri and readily accepted his wish.

• Appreciating Old People •

Swamishri respects, appreciates and remembers senior devotees and old people for their sacrifices, services and devotion. Through recognition, Swamishri revives and enhances feelings of care and respect in families and societies.

On April 10, 2002, Swamishri was in Sarangpur. There was a crowd of devotees and sadhus with him as he was heading towards his residence. Suddenly he moved towards an old man in a wheelchair. Swamishri smiled and said, "Oh! It's Ramji Bhagat." Then Swamishri began recalling events that stretched back over 50 years. "I remember when Shastriji Maharaj celebrated the Jal Jhilani festival here in Sarangpur, Ramji Bhagat used to carry the palanquin with Thakorji for home visits in the village. He is from Keriya. He used to come with his friend, Purushottambhai. The two never missed a single festival. And they worked very hard, offering their services for years in the festivals... I remember them well." Ramji Bhagat was 94. The fact that Swamishri remembers senior devotees like Ramji Bhagat reflects his loving care and appreciation for them.

• Offering Prostrations •

Swamishri arrived in Gadhada at 10.40 a.m. On visiting the holy places of Shriji Maharaj, Swamishri performed prostrations at several places.
In the evening the sadhus, on informing Swamishri that he had performed 36 prostrations in the morning, requested that because of old age and failing health he should not prostrate at all the holy places.
Swamishri replied, "One should offer prostrations. And besides, we have come here after eight to ten months. If it is a daily routine then you are right. And I had not prostrated at all the places.
I had prostrated only at the main places - the mandir, Akshar Ordi, Lakshmi Vadi - and while doing darshan at the other places I got enough rest." The sadhus respectfully added, "But what if we were to do it on your behalf!" Swamishri replied, "Only by eating can one fulfill one's hunger. If I eat, will it satisfy your hunger? Likewise, the prostrations have to be done by myself." Even at the old age Swamishri pays no attention to old age when it comes to offering reverence and respect to Bhagwan Swaminarayan and holy places.

• Simple Nature •
Swamishri arrived in London on 7th April 1988 to commence his 12th foreign tour. In the evening, a grand welcome assembly was held in the mandir. Thousands of devotees from all over England had come to be blessed by Swamishri's darshan. Inspite of the fact that Swamishri was weary after a long and tiring flight, he insisted on blessing all the devotees individually. He sat through the session looking totally relaxed and refreshed. The devotees felt enriched by Swamishri's divine contact and went away bubbling with joy. Towards the end of the session, an aged devotee came to Swamishri with his young grandson Romin. "Romin keeps telling me he wants to see Swamishri's janoi (sacred thread)," remarked the old man.

Swamishri immediately lifted his gataryu (upper cloth) and showed Romin his Janoi. The little boy's heart filled with excitement, his long cherished dream had been fulfilled. He trotted away happily behind his grandfather.

To us, Romin's wish sounds small and irrelevant. But for Romin, it meant the world. Swamishri always has time for children.

He has a simple nature where all sorts of wishes and emotions find their fulfillment.

• On and on... and on... and on! •

During his post bypass surgery rest period, Swamishri often went for a walk at the nearby Pepsico Park. It's a beautiful scenic park, with towering evergreen trees, a large lake, and luscious green lawns.

Today was Sunday, so after Swamishri's walk and singing of the evening arti, the sadhus and devotees sat around Swamishri's wheelchair for the Sunday sabha.

After the reading of a Vachanamrut, Swamishri suddenly digressed onto a totally unrelated topic of conversation. It stemmed from a discussion of how well Ishwarcharan Swami had written the 6 parts of Yogiji Maharaj's biography. And then Swamishri started... one by one he recalled the name of any sadhu he could remember and praised him. First the sadguru sadhus, then with no apparent order he remembered sadhus from Delhi; Kolkata, Surendranagar, Sankari, Bharuch, London - in fact he recalled names from virtually every mandir. For 40 minutes he continued without pause in this remarkable episode of recalling others' virtues. By now it was getting dark. And so, interrupting Swamishri in full flow, the attendant sadhus lifted him off his seat and slowly everyone began to make their way to the car park. But even this did not stop Swamishri. He continued even during the 5-minute walk to the car. He was unstoppable.

He continued even in the car. He praised on, and on, and on... right up until he reached his bed for his asans!
It was a lesson in appreciating and looking at the virtues of others.

He continued even in the car. He praised on, and on, and on... right up until he reached his bed for his asans!
It was a lesson in appreciating and looking at the virtues of others.

1981. Swamishri was going from Sarangpur to Bochasan for the Guru Purnima festival there. Out of sheer grace, Swamishri had taken me along with him in the car.

Initially, he talked a lot. Then as we neared Dhandhuka, the sun began to set and the skies became splashed with the golden, rusty colours of dusk.

Swamishri was in the front; Yogicharan Swami, Santswarup Swami and I were in the back. Turning round slightly, Swamishri looked to me and said, "Do you know the godi?" "Yes," I replied. "Come on then," Swamishri said, "Sing." I was holding Harikrishna Maharaj in my lap. As I started off with the jais, Swamishri finished what he wanted to say. "Arti, ashtak, godi - wherever you may go, never forget them. It's Maharaj's agna. Before, the sadhus used to sing all the kirtans off by heart as well. Never needed books!" Then we started the godi. "Sant samagam kije..." In the traditional style, with just the right tempo, Swamishri's smooth, melodious voice sang away.

Even in a whirlwind of activities, Swamishri has always remained unwavering in the devotion of the Lord.

In 1980 when the Mayor of Nairobi, Nathan Kahara, heard that Swamishri was undertaking a spiritual tour of Kenya, he thought it proper to honor Swamishri on behalf of Nairobi City Council. For this, he arranged a grand civic reception at the City Council Hall.
After the formalities were over, the Lord Mayor proudly stood up to present the "Crest of Nairobi" to Swamishri.
Swamishri also got up but gestured with his arm to present the Crest to the murti of Thakorji which was beside him.
The Mayor was surprised to see such single-minded devotion of Swamishri.
Later, in his address, Swamishri remarked, "God will bless the Lord Mayor as he has presented the Crest to Him." Swamishri offers or directs all honor to the Lord first.

Once Swamishri was in USA. From New York he phoned Amdavad mandir. He enquired about everyone's welfare. Then Swamishri called Raichand on the phone and asked him how he was. Raichand was simply overjoyed. Though he is not a member of the mandir committee nor a doctor or an engineer, but a simple shepherd who tends the mandir cows, Swamishri remembered him and talked with him. The middle-aged Raichand still cherishes that short, sweet, memorable telephone conversation.

The Amdavad Bal Mandal had just finished a splendid drama. Sitting in a special seat in the audience, Swamiji had watched with a glowing smile. It was obvious to the multitude around him that he was pleased with the children's devotional performance. To give blessings, Swamiji was asked to come up on stage. As he eased himself onto his seat, the excited children crowded around him trying to touch his holy feet. One boy, Mayank, asked, "Swami! What did you think of our program?" "Very nice, very nice," Swami replied in English. "What present will you give us Swami?" Mayank asked. Swamiji looked around at the beaming, innocent faces. With an emphatic wave of the hand he announced, "Go, I give you Akshardham." The kids were clever and made doubly sure that Swami really meant what he said by asking, "Promise Swami?" "Yes, I promise" Swami replied.

Even Parsi and other non-Gujarati devotees, like Gulzarilal Nandaji, readily accepted the upasana. Yogiji Maharaj initiated the nine Yogeshwars in Mumbai.

A satsangi student, Kashyap Pandit, residing at the BAPS hostel in Vidyanagar offered Swamishri his hand in promise. He asked, “You have fulfilled your promises to us. But today, tell me what promise do you want from me.”
“As a promise I want your allegiance to satsang and your steadfastness in following moral injunctions. Be very vigilant that you never fall into addictions, vices and bad company.”
Swamishri expects no mundane promises from us. He solely wishes for the moral and spiritual elevation of all.

  • • Shastriji Maharaj: Incorporating the Feeling “I Am of the Sanstha and the Santha Is Mine.” •

BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is mine and I belong to the Sanstha. It is my duty to maintain the good of the Sanstha. And for achieving that if I have to do all I can I shall consider it to be my great fortune.” Isn’t it a great achievement if every member of an organization wedded to do good for all believes this? When Shastriji Maharaj laid the foundations of the Sanstha he had imbibed these feelings among the devotees and also ensured that it would remain for generations to come. Devotees living in India as well as abroad have displayed this trait, whether they are rich or poor, ordinary or accomplished. After consecrating four mandirs Shastriji Maharaj started the work of Gadhada mandir amidst much opposition. During his illness in Atladra Shastriji Maharaj was worrying about the Gadhada mandir. Champaklal Sheth and the then member of the Planning Commision for the Government of India, Gulzarilal Nandaji, visited Swami. Swami mentioned the dire financial situation for the construction of Gadhada mandir. Nandaji returned to Delhi and sent two thousand rupees to Swami by selling his car. In another incident while Shastriji Maharaj was in Atladra, Ranchhodbhai Umedbhai Patel of Africa learnt that the Sanstha was in need of money. On the very next day he donated Rs. 10,000 to Shastriji Maharaj. Ranchhodbhai had donated all his money which he had saved to spend in renovating his house. There are innumerable incidents like these. For the service of the Sanstha devotees like Govindbhai of Dungri-Timba sold his horse, Narayanbhai sold his land and Bhudharbhai even tied up his wife. Even though Ashabhai’s house was burnt down he borrowed five thousand rupees and donated it to the Sanstha. At a very old age he left his home to become a sadhu and serve the Sanstha. Devotees like Harshadbhai Dave dedicated their entire life for promoting the greatness and glory of the Sanstha. All the devotees of Shastriji Maharaj had only one motto, “I am of the Sanstha, the Sanstha is mine, and the benefit of the Sanstha is the goal of my life.” #shastrijimaharaj #yagnapurush #yogibapa #psm

  • Yogiji Maharaj-Devotion to His Guru •

Have you ever wondered why Yogiji Maharaj is always smiling or laughing? Well, Yogiji Maharaj dedicated his whole life to his guru, Shastriji Maharaj. Everything that Yogiji Maharaj did was according to Shastriji Maharaj’s agna. This pleased Shastriji Maharaj, and so he showered his blessings on Yogiji Maharaj. So, since Yogiji Maharaj’s guru was happy with him, he was happy. Never did he hesitate in doing what Shastriji Maharaj asked and never did he do anything for himself. Such was the love, dedication, devotion and respect that Yogiji Maharaj had for his guru.

Yogiji Maharaj would become extremely happy when he heard Shastriji Maharaj calling his name. So much so, that even if he was eating, he would drop his food and run to fulfil Shastriji Maharaj’s agna.
Once, as a result of doing hard work all day long, Yogiji Maharaj developed a hernia which required surgery. Shastriji Maharaj, other sadhus and devotees came to the hospital to see Yogiji Maharaj. Upon seeing Shastriji Maharaj, Yogiji Maharaj was overcome with joy. Shastriji Maharaj blessed Yogiji Maharaj and then the doctors performed the surgery. After the surgery, Yogiji Maharaj was brought back to his room. When Yogiji Maharaj woke up, he saw Shastriji Maharaj sitting in front of him, smiling. Right away Yogiji Maharaj folded his hands with respect. Then, in a low voice, he asked the devotee sitting nearby, “Has milk been served to Shastriji Maharaj?” Everyone present in the room, including the doctor, wondered, “This Yogi must have been in a divine trance. Only then is it possible to remember the guru after waking up from surgery.” As Shastriji Maharaj’s personal attendant in Gondal, Yogiji Maharaj served him milk and medicine daily. So when Yogiji Maharaj awoke after his surgery, his first thought was his seva for his guru. As seen in this incident, Yogiji Maharaj’s devotion to his guru was indeed complete and pure.

  • SWAMINARAYAN AKSHARDHAM

Swami Narayan's Temple is one of the most beautiful attraction for tourists in New Delhi. Other than Delhi, Gujarat also have (unfortunately I could not capture any pictures). Camera, mobile phones or and any digital equipments are not allowed inside the area of both the temples in Delhi and Gujarat. So, I did not have any pictures from inside the temple. These pictures were taken while I with my husband was strolling on the highway and enjoying the weather. One can also view this beautiful temple from Akshardham Metro Station and capture pictures from there too. The night view from inside and outside is marvellous (will upload pictures of night view very soon). Everything built there is based on Indian culture and tradition. I have been visiting the temple for many a times but the works of the monument still mesmerize me. Things to see there are:
#Ten Gates at the entry

#Gajendra Peeth at the bottom of the main building

  • • Outspokenness For Principles and Benefit of the Organization •

Outspokenness does not mean that “I strongly utter whatever I believe in.” In fact, it means striking a perfect balance by bearing
in mind the feelings, benefits and principles of the other person. A head of any organization can only become outspoken if he can achieve a proper balance between the three things.

Shastriji Maharaj had this inherent ability since childhood. Recognizing this unparalleled talent in him, Bechar Bhagat, the assistant kothari of Vartal, proposed
that he should help him in his work.
But Dungar Bhagat, the childhood name of Shastriji Maharaj, clearly said, “I want to become a sadhu.”
The kothari was not satisfied with the answer and insisted, “Be a sadhu from within!”
Dungar Bhagat was small but his goal was clear. And so he firmly replied, “You become a sadhu from inside. I will become one when I meet a true sadhu.”
The incident that follows happened during the initial years after Shastriji Maharaj became a sadhu.
A month-long discourse on the Satsangijivan was organized in Junagadh. Shastriji Maharaj was the youngest of the four speakers. But on the last day a question arose, “Which speaker should be offered pujan first by the host of the parayan?”
Harilal Sheth, who had sponsored the pa- rayan, announced that he would do the pujan of Shastriji Maharaj first as his discourses were the most enlightening.
On hearing this a few malevolent people disliked it and shouted, “Today, one whose guru is a tailor and a cobbler is being given a prominent status.” Shastriji Maharaj realized that because of caste distinctions they are denigrating Pragji Bhakta and Jaga Bhakta, who are great devotees of Maharaj. Shastriji Maharaj was not one who would sit back and listen to such insults to his guru. He roared like a lion, “The right to become a guru is not limited only to an ascetic. Shriji Maharaj has also mentioned in the Vachanamrut that one cannot acquire the saintly virtues if one has pride for one’s caste”.

  • • GLORIOUS HISTORY OF BAPS SATSANG IN RAJKOT •

The city of Rajkot, a prominent industrial hub in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, has been associated with the Swaminarayan Sampradaya since the time of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
It was in Rajkot that Bhagwan Swaminarayan met Sir John Malcolm, Governor of Mumbai, on 28 Febuary 1830 (Fagan sud 6, Ashadhi Samvat 1886) and where he had also previously met Colonel Walker.
Thereafter, satsang in the city was nurtured by Aksharbrahman Gunatitanand Swami and all the Gunatit gurus, and by stalwart disciples like Jaga Swami, Krishnaji Ada and others.
In particular, Brahmaswarup Shastriji Maharaj stayed at the Swaminarayan Mandir of the Vartal diocese in the Danapith area while he was studying Sanskrit under the tutelage of Jivanram Shastri at Hatkeshwar Mandir.
Krishnaji Ada strongly supported Shastriji Maharaj’s propagation of the Akshar-Purushottam doctrine and it was at his home that the historic first meeting between Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj took place.
Krishnaji Ada’s home was a haven for all who propounded the Akshar-Purushottam doctrine, even before the BAPS Mandir in Kadia Sheri was inaugurated.
When Bhagwan Swaminarayan had come to Rajkot to meet Sir John Malcolm, he had bathed in the Aji River at a spot near to Krishnaji Ada’s home, where a Mahadev Mandir now stands. Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj used to conduct a sabha on every ekadashi at Krishnaji Ada’s home.
Then, a woman devotee named Avalba donated her property in Kadia Sheri to Vignandas Swami to establish an Akshar-Purushottam Mandir and for sadhus to stay.
Devotees who supported Shastriji Maharaj at that time included: Shamaldas Pujara (Janta Guesthouse) and his son Lalitbhai Pujara, Himmatlal Premjibhai Pujara, Tapanbhai Popatbhai Jhala, Pragjibhai Dal and his son Gordhanbhai, Jadvaben (mother of Tapubhai Jhala) and others. Chandulalbhai (an administrator for Maharaja Bhagvatsinh) and seven devotees went to meet the Maharaja (Bhagvatsinhji) and told him, “You have been blessed by Gunatitanand Swami. He had come to Dhoraji and applied a chandlo on your forehead. When you were three years old Swami had come from Junagadh to Dhoraji with a coat, sword and other royal things for you. Then, he applied a chandlo on your forehead and declared that you were the crown prince. Thus, you are very hallowed and are now sitting on the king’s throne due to Gunatitanand Swami’s grace. We would like to build a mandir above the Deri.”
Thereafter, Naranji Maharaj revealed, “Gunatitanand Swami came out of the Deri and gave me darshan in Jhadeshwar and said, ‘Build a mandir above the Deri.’ We have thus taken a pledge on the day of Ashadh sud Punam [full- moon day]. We request you to give us the land.”
Noor Muhammad Sheth of Dhoraji was ready to buy the same land at Rs. 2 per square yard. And the Maharaja had agreed to sell it to him at that price. But Naranji Maharaj said, “You are Gunatitanand Swami’s disciple and so am I. Thus, we are guru-brothers. I had cooked khichdi at the Jetpur Mandir for Gunatitanand Swami and served him. Swami gave me the benefit of doing that seva. Praising Shastriji Maharaj’s long-lasting man- agerial abilities, Manibhai Brahmbhatt, a former trustee of the Sanstha says, “The process and principles of management for the mandirs built by Swamishri has been federal. Every mandir manages its own affairs and is also responsible
to all the others. Every mandir has its local kothari endowed with authority and responsibilities for its management. Yet the Sanstha remains united.” To- day, 100 years later, the Sanstha is managed methodically in
    the same way.
When India achieved her independence, the Sanstha had huge mandirs and hundreds of acres of land which
Trust. Inspired by Shastriji Maharaj, Nirgun- das Swami had the trust deed prepared on 24 June 1947. Prior to that, Swamishri had studied the constitutions of several other religious trusts. Swamishri, after understanding the loop- holes of other constitutions, which had led to ills in the administration of those organizations, framed the constitution of BAPS. [continue in comment]

  • • Vasant Panchmi •

Vasant Panchmi occurs on Maha Sud 5 and marks the beginning of spring. Since this festival celebrates the rejuvenation of nature after winter’s dormancy, there is no scriptural reference for this festival. However, Vasant Panchmi has been a part of the Hindu festival calendar for thousands of years and is a special festival in the Swaminarayan Sampraday. Nishkulanand Swami and Brahmanand Swami, two of Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s paramhansas, were born on this day. Vasant Panchmi also marks the advent of the Shikshapatri and the birth of Shastriji Maharaj, the third spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and the founder of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. In the Swaminarayan Sampraday, devotees gather to sing bhajans written by Brahmanand Swami and Nishkulanand Swami, to listen to discourses on the Shikshapatri, and to celebrate the life and work of Shastriji Maharaj.

Origins:
Kalidas praises Vasant (Spring) as Ruturaj, the King of All Seasons, in his Raghuvamsha.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Shri Krishna considers Vasant (Spring) as one of his vibhutis, or forms, Rutunaam Kusumaakaraha.

Rituals:
Devotees celebrate the life and work of Shastriji Maharaj and acknowledge the creation of and listen to discourses on the Shikshapatri at BAPS mandirs worldwide.

The Akshar Purushottam Mandir in Sarangpur was under construction. Nagji Sheth, a devotee of Shastriji Maharaj, came to the mandir. Out of curiosity he peeped into the small hut that was being used as the kitchen. He expected that with so many sadhus and devotees working so hard, there would be a fully cooked meal ready. Surprisingly, he saw that only rotlos (flat bread made from millet) was being prepared for lunch. They would be served with just peppers.
In those days, Yogiji Maharaj cooked and served in the kitchen. Nagji Sheth gave a half-litre bottle of cooking oil he had brought, “Swami, please use this oil to cook vegetables for Thakorji and the sadhus.”
A month later, when he again came to Sarangpur, he met Yogiji Maharaj, “Swami, if the cooking oil has run out, let me refill it for you.” Smiling to himself, Yogiji Maharaj went to the cabinet to retrieve the bottle of oil that Nagji Sheth had given the previous month. He presented the bottle to him, “Sheth... Here’s the oil that you gave us.”
Nagji Sheth was confused, “Not even a drop has been used. Why?”
Yogiji Maharaj explained, “Four months, we have not seen vegetables. What would we use the oil to cook?”
Shastrji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj, as well as their sadhus and devotees, didn’t even have money to purchase vegetables. Sometimes, they would fill their stomachs with grams and water. Many times they would dissolve flour in water and drink it to appease their hunger. And often, they even had to fast.
INSPIRATION: We should keep courage even during the most trying times. This requires us to endure difficulties and continue to pray and serve Maharaj and Swami.

  • • DIVINE BROTHERHOOD •

In 1947, a devotee asked Shastriji Maharaj to visit Mumbai and hold a 7-day scriptural reading at the Suryanarayan Hall in Bhuleshwar. After Shastriji Maharaj arrived in Mumbai, the devotee talked about postponing the program. Sonaba thus asked Dadubhai and Kantibhai to pick up the expenses so that the plans would remain intact. Shastriji Maharaj was very pleased, and over 500 devotees attended the reading.

When Dadubhai and Kantibhai met Shastriji Maharaj the next day, Shastriji Maharaj began a divine play. He sorrowfully expressed, "At this old age, why did I think about constructing these temples? See this letter has come - we have to pay 27 thousand rupees (for the Gadhada temple[16]). Where can I get such money?" Dadubhai and Kantibhai immediately interjected that they would get however much money was necessary, even if it meant incurring a debt. With Dadubhai and Kantibhai's devotion, Shastriji Maharaj showed happiness and said, "Both of you give 27 thousand rupees." Dadubhai and Kantibhai did so that very same evening.
Shastriji Maharaj then explained to Dadubhai, "Your father, Dr. Nathabhai, asked me once, 'Do great saints have all the powers of God?' When I said, 'Yes,' Dr. Nathabhai replied, 'How can we know this?' So I said, 'If one person gives money for the Gadhada temple, then believe it's God's power.'" Grabbing Dadubhai's hair, Shastriji Maharaj exclaimed, "That person is you!" To this, Dadubhai replied, "I am not doing anything, I am just giving you what is already yours." Shastriji Maharaj smilingly then said, "I will stay one more day - give 16 thousand more now, and 4 thousand later for the golden thrones of the Akshar-Purushottam moortis."
Shastriji Maharaj then placed his hands on both the heads of Dadubhai and Kantibhai and bringing them together, he said, "From today, you are divine brothers. Do not separate, under any circumstances. You will bring spirituality to the world." He then called Yogi Bapa and asked him to bless the pair as well.
