  • Hans Munch, "The Good Man of Auschwitz"

The conduct of Nazi staff at Auschwitz is an appalling chapter in human history. The cruelty routinely perpetrated was so egregious that, in 1947, a Polish court convened a special tribunal to mete out justice to 40 former Auschwitz personnel. Of the defendants, 21 were condemned and executed, 18 were convicted and given jail sentences, and one, Dr. Hans Munch, was acquitted.
Former prisoners testified that Munch had been kind and humane; he gave them food and extended bogus experiments on female prisoners because he knew they would be gassed once the experiments were concluded. Most impressive, Munch refused to participate in the selection process dictating who lived or died at Auschwitz. In the final days of the war, his last official act at a concentration camp was to advise an inmate on how to escape, wish him good luck, and hand him his service revolver.
Munch ignited a controversy late in life with bizarre interviews about his tenure at Auschwitz. His son explained his father was so senile he couldn't identify the family cat. A documentarian who made a film on Munch similarly attested to Munch's confused state of mind, and Munch was eventually diagnosed with Alzheimer.

  • A Brandy bottle that almost killed Hitler

Adolf Hitler survived several serious assassination attempts, none more dangerous than the March 13, 1943 bombing attempt masterminded by General Henning Von Tresckow. Hitler had flown to the general's headquarters in Smolensk, USSR, for a visit to the front lines. Von Tresckow asked an aide on Hitler's staff to take some brandy bottles wrapped in brown paper to Hitler's HQ and, eventually, deliver them to another officer in Berlin. Actually, the package was a bomb, primed to detonate while the plane was aloft. When Hitler's death occurred, conspirators would launch a coup in Berlin.
But Hitler's plane landed without incident, and a stunned Von Tresckow quickly sent a subordinate by plane to retrieve the device, lest they all be compromised. Luckily, the bomb was retrieved and, upon examination, it was determined the freezing temperatures of the unheated luggage department prevented detonation. Von Tresckow was also involved in the July 20 plot in 1944. When he heard of the plot's failture, he drove to the front lines of the Eastern front, attempted to stage a partisan ambush to protect co-conspirators, and committed suicide by grenade.

  • Something a little bit different today. I was visiting an English cemetery in Nederweert (The Netherlands) yesterday. It was gifted by the Dutch to Great Britain, to honour all men who died in World War 2, after the liberation in 1945. There are 362 men laying here. All of them so young. I saw ages from 19 to mid 20. My husband even told me that some of them lied about their age, making themselves older, just to be allowed to fight. It’s an impressive but meaningful and beautiful place and strolling about the field with my husband and daughter made me so thankful we are all here in freedom 🌺💚 Specially today on Father’s Day.

Frankl
-
Frankl

  • Next in our series of Mustangs For Sale we have P-51D 44-74453, "Frances Dell". This Mustang served with the RCAF and was sold in 1959 to Trans Florida Aviation. Then in 1960 it went to famous 60's Mustang racing pilot E.D. Weiner. It went through a few owners until it was crashed in 1963, killing owner John Barker. In the 80's another famous Mustang racer, Bill Destafani, purchased the remains and began a 3 year rebuild using an Australian built airframe with an adopted ID of 44-13903. After rebuild it went to Canada for a couple of years before coming back to the states and becoming "Glamorous Jen" for little while and then becoming "Glamorous Gal" in 1989. She kept the same name until 2011 when she suffered a gear collapse. The damage prompted another restoration, this time by the very skilled Mustang guru's at Midwest Aero, who did an outstanding job. Along with the restoration came a new paint scheme and name, "Frances Dell". This Mustang has a V-1650-7 Merlin with transport heads and banks with only 135 SMOH, and new Avia prop blades with 150 hours on them. According to the ad this plane has been completely gone through and has had many improvements and can be yours for a swift $2,825,000.
