  • "2019...what a ride! Quitting our jobs and hitting the road turned out to be nothing close to what we imagined. The highs and lows, the blood, sweat, and tears; the incredible kindness and hospitality of complete strangers and the friendships made along the way; the extreme test of our relationship and all the moments of beauty, challenge, and mayhem to look back on with a grin... it’s been an epic year, and we wouldn’t have traded it for the world. It’s given us all the more resolve to commit to biking as much as possible, whether at home or abroad. Traveling by bicycle truly does offer one of the most unique ways to experience the world: it’s cheap, green, and perhaps the best part of it is the vulnerability. The connection you make with people and places is unparalleled.

Aside from all the personal lessons we learned on the trip, one of the biggest practical lessons we learned was the value of minimalism. We can’t even begin to tell you how much freedom, peace of mind, and stress reduction we had traveling with only the bare necessities - and those being quality, affordable, and super light whenever possible. And now that we’re back in the USA, we’ve been busy with our newly-launched website specializing in affordable, ultralight gear for minimalist travelers! It’s all stuff we’ve slowly gathered and tested during our trip. If you’re interested in supporting us while building your own gear setup, check us out at @uladventuregear. We’re also preparing for an incredible opportunity that came up working on a sailboat. We’ll be keeping the blog updated, and you’ll see it shift offshore. If all goes to plan, we should finish the trip in the spring of 2021.

Sending lots of love to all our friends and family out there and wishing you all a happy new year. Let the 2020’s begin!

Love,

  • Keep pushing! #schiebung #derschieberichgehtum

To be fair: the roads in Ethiopia are really good! This is just us returning to the main road from our wildcamp spot. BUT we have to go down such roads only to have some privacy. There are people everywhere in this country and if one guy sees you he will call his friends and they will all watch you together. No matter what you do: cook, eat, sleep, poop... It is horrible! And of course a guy with his AK47 found us. Luckily there was only one friend and a kid around, so we had just 3 spectators that night.

  • 2 months! I left my home, my family, my friends, my comfort and and my job 2 months ago now to travel all around the world with Pile-poil (my bike)!
I did around 3000km to be in Montenegro today!
I rode under rain, snow, sun, against wind, I managed with the cold and I climb austrian mountains🌧❄☀️🌬⛰🌍
I've seen a lot of amazing landscape through 6 countries and met many nice people from all over the world! I had some bad experiment too bit there is always somebody to help me!
I had no real experiment in bicycle and it's the first time I left France alone but it's maybe the best decision I took in my entire life! 🚴‍♂️

  • 15.000 km down ✅!! What a heck of a rollercoaster ride it has been, bringing us from our little comfortable home in Amsterdam to the jungles of South East Asia. Here’s to the countless highs and the necessary but very few lows on the trip, to all the sweet and generous people we have met along the way, to all the incredible and sometimes daunting nature that this planet has showed us! Bring on the next couple of rollercoaster loops in Asia and Oceania 🚴🏼‍♂️🚴🏼‍♀️🏔🏖🙌🏼

@juniperschmidt and I competed a 300 mile route in Baja together and we’ve both come to the conclusion that it was the best bike trip we’ve ever done.
Few folks know that Jenny is days away from embarking on her next adventure: Borders Aren’t Barriers. A route she developed that goes from San Diego, CA to Corpus Christi, TX. Over 2,000 miles along the USA/Mexico border and she will be doing it mostly alone.
I love how strong and capable Jenny is. I love how she handles all the prying, unbelievable questions she receives when she shares her trip with people. I love that she doesn’t let fear stand in the way of her goals and what that Inspires in others. I love Jenny and how much she loves tacos!
Give @juniperschmidt a follow if you want to follow along on her adventures!

  • Vietnam and in particular, Hanoi has bought a whole new set of experiences.⁣
⁣
I’ve taken a series of videos to show you what it’s like...⁣
⁣
🎥 1 - It’s mesmerising to watch Vietnamese traffic - more enjoyable than riding through it. It feels like there aren’t any rules. At intersections everyone creeps towards the middle and gently weaves around each other. The traffic rarely stops but they slow down for each other. Pedestrians hold an arm out to signal “I’m crossing...” because traffic lights and crossings aren’t respected.⁣
⁣
🎥 2 - Scooters carry heavy loads. There’s a traffic jam because a bunch of scooters deemed it suitable to park IN THE MIDDLE of the road. The officer in green was trying to get some order, but it’s like herding cats.⁣
⁣
🎥 3 - Stew snapped a live picture just as I was tucking into my Banh Mi (a Vietnamese sandwich). At first I’d posed with the sandwich like it was a trophy, but we thought this video was much more human and real! I don’t know if you can see but my skin is spotty. I’ve never had spots like it as an adult. It could be from a multitude of things, but I’m guessing it’s air pollution, vehicle fumes, humidity and sweat. My skin has been getting worse since South China.⁣
⁣
🎥 4 - my favourite. When we were sat outside drinking coffee this gentleman tapped on my shoulder and pointed to the floor. I thought he wanted to sweep the cigarette butts under my feet 🤦🏽‍♀️. He shines shoes on the streets; this is a popular business. I was confused because I was wearing sandals. He pulled glue from his caddy and pointed again at the soles of my shoes which were indeed broken. I was impressed by his hawk-eyes for a broken shoe. He wanted 50,000 dong (£1.65) to repair them. I didn’t haggle, I wasn’t bothered about the repair because they’ve been broke for months but out of sheer curiosity I paid 50,000Đ and he glued my shoes. The tools he used included the blade of a Stanley knife and a toothbrush. I probably walked on them too soon, but the glue didn’t hold haha.⁣
⁣
Share your thoughts below and I’m curious to know, how do you handle haggling?

  • Enjoying my first camp & sunset in Burma! -

Wild camping is illegal in Myanmar, so i was pretty chuffed with myself when I found this secluded spot. Just off the main highway out of Yangon, I found a huge walled off area of recently flattened land. I assume a factory was to be build there as it was a pretty industrial area, but it made a wonderful place to sleep for the night

Miradouro da Lua, Angola
A morning drive-by as I had missed this on my ride into Angola. My super sweet-generous-fun hosts deemed it essential viewing.
Loved the red, white and greens disappearing into the blues.
But just like Fish River Canyon in Namibia, and Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan, once you have witnessed and hiked down into Grand Canyon in the USA, everything else pales.
You see this Cuca beer ad, you know you're there.
No fancy signage a la USA where everyhting is storyboarded and pointed at, which makes it the perfect lazy roadtrip country. Nope, haven't cycled there and have no plans to. Plenty places I haven't been yet.

  • From Istanbul we headed west towards Europe & the coastline of the Adriatic Sea. We hugged the stunning coastline, crossing a border every few days. We reached Trieste Italy and really started to feel the change of season. We continued round the top of Italy’s ‘boot’ before heading south to Ladispoli. During these 6 weeks we cycled 3237km and climbed 26,554m of vertical ascent. We passed through 7 different countries in such a short time, spending just 30mins in Bosnia! From Italy we took a ferry to Barcelona, taking us almost to Ibiza, especially ending our trip a month early. This was never in our plan, but at the time every day was dominated by the cold heavy relentless rain. We intend to come back and explore more of these countries on shorter trips. 🗺 .

Moments like these make you feel far, far from home.

  • Back in town after 10 incredible days in the wilderness. I was exploring some largely undiscovered and mostly unmapped areas; it's amazing what you can do with satellite imagery these days! The first part of my route was a success and took me through some areas of staggering natural beauty, but I had to abort the second section and switch to my plan B, which has brought me briefly back into civilisation a little earlier than planned. This photo was from the easy first 35km section of the route, heading north out of El Chaltén. It doesn't look like it, but what you see here contains everything I have as well as food for more than two weeks. Tetris packing skills on point!
