  • Should I give my child a bedtime snack?🤷🏽‍♀️ Bedtime snacking is often one of the most popular food topics in parenting circles. As a nutrition geek 🤓, whenever I hear a snack question, my first reaction is to pinpoint where it can become a problem.

My issue with bedtime snack - it may completely replace dinner if:

1️⃣ Snacks turn into a short order substitute for dinner. Example: a child does not like what is offered and asks for a snack a few minutes after the dinner table is cleared. 
2️⃣ Bedtime snack is something that a child really likes 🍪🍦🥨 so he is happy to wait for it instead of eating dinner. 
3️⃣ When dinners mostly consist of food that is challenging for the child. 🥦🍆🥩 At the same time, a bedtime snack is a smart move when: 📌 there are typically more than 2 hours between dinner and bedtime 📌the family is transitioning into the family meal routine and needs a backup in case the dinner is refused 📌the child is at his hungriest right after nursery or school, eats a big meal in the afternoon and only nibbles at dinner. 📌when a child is going through a growth spurt.

Steps to smart bedtime snacking: ⏰ Consider the timing. If, for example, your child eats dinner at 5.30 and goes to bed at 8, it is very reasonable to expect them to be slightly hungry before going to bed - so it may be a perfect timing for a snack. 🗒 Avoid making bedtime snack the main attraction of the evening routine. 🎉🎈A bedtime snack may occasionally include the child’s absolute favorites but it does not have to every single day. Try to serve a balanced snack including 2-3 food groups, and 1-2 foods your child will eat when hungry. 📍 Plan the location. Seated down at a table is the best place to eat all meals and snacks.

We tend to be on and off bedtime snacking, although my growing 13 year old needs one most of the evenings. 👱🏼‍♀️🌮🍗🍜 .

  • Traded in those palm trees for pine trees and ocean views for snow-capped mountains. 
And wouldn’t you know it, that brood of mine DID miss me after all. 😉

They were bright-eyed with toothy (toothless for one of them) smiles when I walked in the door shortly after 11:00 last night. They were so full of stories, the words spilled out quickly and energetically. They wanted me to know all I’d missed: performances and practices. A VIP outing with friends. A surprise flood in a public restroom. A birthday party. A basketball game: the basketball team vs the faculty. (The faculty won by 4.) And that dad of theirs? He baked banana bread and meatloaf and fried up some homemade donuts and did reading lessons and kept on top of our shared Google calendar and managed all the things like a boss. 
I always love going and equally love going home. (And three cheers for seven STRAIGHT hours of sleep!) 💥

  • 5 days of sticking to a meal plan and using my portion containers to see how big of a difference it would make- I'm down 2 lbs! FIVE DAYS, PEOPLE!

I'll be honest with you- I've always avoided the nutrition portion for the most part because I just find it OVERWHELMING! The thought of taking even more time to plan out every single thing that I'm going to eat in a week, browsing through hundreds of recipes to figure out what I MIGHT be hungry for that week, meal prepping, planning. Etc. I GET IT! IT'S TOO MUCH ALL AT ONCE!

Instead of avoiding it. I decided I was going to fully commit and try it for one week to see if it's as impossible as it seems. BUT- instead of letting it be overwhelming, I started with basics. I started each day this week with the same simple breakfast that I'm never disappointed with- Greek yogurt with fresh fruit. Packed myself 2 green containers of raw veggies to snack (instead of crunchy chips, pretzels, etc.) And my morning shake with JUST almond milk. That leaves me with 2 vegetables for lunch and dinner, a fruit as another snack, 2 more proteins for lunch and dinner, and ALL my carbs and fats! Instead of blowing through them by adding granola to my yogurt, I kept it for later. I know I might want a slice of fresh bread with my lunch, or noodles with my dinner, etc. And it worked PERFECTLY.

I'm down 2 pounds by eating more, more often, and keeping it simple and realistic.
.
No cutting anything out.
No unrealistic diet.
No splurging out of hunger at the end of the night.
Simple. Realistic. Results.
.
And can we talk about the EDUCATION in this program!? Once I watched the videos and learned how my body works in regards to eating and what the different foods do for you- it is already so much easier to see my mistakes in my old "healthy eating" habits I thought I had!

If you had the extra time or money, would you love to learn more and take classes on things that just interest you??? I know I would! This was like a class in nutrition that was a fraction of the cost of classes. And on my own time, from my phone- GENIUS!

  • These carrot broccoli and egg muffins are great for breakfast lunch or dinner during the week. All you have to do is cut up small pieces of carrots and broccoli, mix them in scrambled eggs and put them in a muffin pan. They are done in 25 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. So good and quick. 👩‍🍳 #breakfast #everymeal #workingmom

  • The sacred weekend is here once again! I’ve mentioned this before but Joe has been working a sh*t load which means weekends are for the three of us to reconnect, then annoy each other in one way or another, then keep going bc you’re family and you love no matter what. ⠀⠀ •
Of course, the weekend wouldn’t be complete without *some* kind of work, for me as well as him. So...there will client follow ups, some gd email, property searches, etc. ⠀⠀ •
Whatever you’re doing this weekend, know that there will be annoyances, but it’s all temporary and at the end of that day it’s all good.
