  • This beautiful female grey wolf approached us with her pack on the west coast of the Hudson Bay, Manitoba, Canada 🇨🇦 . She was bold and curious, and I distinctly remember hearing the crunching of the icy snow under her feet. Never once did we feel even remotely threatened .

  • Video by Bertie Gregory @bertiegregory | A large male polar bear heads out on to the sea ice to hunt. Like many polar bears, this male had spent the summer on land, waiting for the sea to refreeze. We met him in late fall on the western Hudson Bay. Over a period of just a few days, the sea went from a wavy liquid to a rock-solid ice pathway for the bears. At sunset, we witnessed this bear head out on the ice in search of seals, to get his first good meal in four months. Watch these bears in action in my new online series "Wild_Life: The Big Freeze." Content sponsored by Destination Canada. Available on National Geographic YouTube and at natgeo.com/wildlife. Follow @bertiegregory for more on the series.

  • Video by Bertie Gregory @bertiegregory | Having recently broken out of the den with their mother, these three-month-old polar bear cubs were unbelievably cute. But although they look small here, they were born much smaller. The polar bear’s active gestation period of just 60 days means they come out the size of a squirrel and weight less than two lbs. To see more of these lovely little animals. check out my new online series "Wild_Life: The Big Freeze." Content sponsored by Destination Canada. • A large male polar bear approaches in a snow storm on the west coast of the Hudson Bay, Canada. Although this bear was big, polar bears do get even bigger with the largest male polar bears weighing more than 700kg/1500lbs! To see this guy in action, check out my new online series, ‘Wild_Life: The Big Freeze’. Available on National Geographic YouTube and at natgeo.com/wildlife.

  • When filming for a wildlife programme, having shots where animals enter the frame is often very useful for the editing. In this situation with a nice big bull moose, it would have been very easy to keep the camera pointed at the animal. You’ll notice as the moose starts to walk, instead of holding the shot, I whip pan the camera to the right and then hold on an empty frame, letting the animal walk into frame before continuing to pan to the right. This is a really simple technique to get a shot that introduces a character or starts a scene. Try doing it the next time you see a wild animal or pet on the move! To see this moose in action, check out my new online series, ‘Wild_Life: The Big Freeze’ at natgeo.com/wildlife or on National Geographic Youtube.

  • Video by Bertie Gregory @bertiegregory | A male polar bear opens an eye during a nap on the west coast of Hudson Bay, Canada. This male bear was in no rush. He was waiting near the water’s edge in anticipation for the big freeze: an annual event when the ocean turns into a rock-solid ice pathway. This ice allows him to hunt his primary prey, the ringed seal. To see this guy in action and to learn more about polar bears’ incredible lives, watch ‘Wild_Life: The Big Freeze’. • Video by Bertie Gregory @bertiegregory | If you didn’t know this was two male polar bears, it would be reasonable to think this was some kind of male/female courtship. While stranded on land, male polar bears often pair with a sparring buddy. This allows them to practice fighting, as in a few month’s time they could be out on the sea ice fighting in deadly battles over breeding rights. Although they do aggressively box and wrestle during this practice time, they often go through an extraordinary ritual when they first meet. In this case, the smaller polar bear (on the left) saw the much larger bear (on the right) approaching and decided to roll on his back in this submissive posture. These two massive predators then spent the next half an hour or so nuzzling and nibbling one another. It was only after this tenderness, that they somehow decided to have fight! To see them in action, check out my new online series, "Wild_Life: The Big Freeze" at natgeo.com/wildlife or on National Geographic Youtube. Content sponsored by Destination Canada.
