  • Daily home based quarantine workouts in full swing this week with all the local gyms closed. After this rainy spell passes I'll get out to some parks for some calisthenics. What are you doing to keep your mind and body busy during these days of social isolation?

  • WARNING: VIOLENT CONTENT
<Close-Quarters Knife Attack>
I don't have a lot of information on this event, but was told it is on the Israeli border. The assailant is in discussions with two law enforcement officers, when he draws a large knife and proceeds to attack one of them.
Based on the video, it doesn't appear the officer sustained any serious wounds (thankfully). There are a few learning points to include pre-attack indicators that could have given the officer more time to prepare for or even prevent the attack.
1. The assailant has his backpack in front of him, positioned perfectly for drawing a staged weapon (something I often do when traveling). His right hand is concealed from view inside the bag during the moments leading up to the attack.
2. The assailant (who already seems to have the thousand-yard stare) blades his body into attack position and moves his right food slightly back into medium-range.
3. Despite these indicators, the officer almost has his back turned to the assailant and shifts his attention back and forth between him and the officer behind the glass.
4. During the first moments of the attack, movement towards Zero-Pressure would have put the officer in a better position considering he decided to engage the assailant (as opposed to holding onto him yet moving away). Fortunately during those first moments it appears the assailant's knife breaks at the handle. Officers are able to subdue him during his escape attempt.

  • Some clips from an interview I did with @calmbatives last year during my weekend training workshop with @lyotomachidafw and @chinzomachida
of @machidakarate >:>:>:>:>:>:>:>:
#repost from @tigatactics
Interview with Kali Master/SWAT Officer Jared Wihongi: "TWIST (The Way I See Things) with Tiga Tactics" is our new series in which we interview fellow combatives instructors we admire and are honored to have as part of our tribe. In our debut episode, we feature Tuhon Jared Wihongi — a police SWAT officer, master of Pekit-Tirsia Kali, and a trainer to the elite units around the world, including the U.S. Army Special Forces. We picked his brain about self-defense, lethal confrontations, and what's the best martial art to learn. You might be surprised at what he says!
Follow @tigatactics for more interviews with world renowned self-defense instructors.

  • #ThrowBackThursday to around 2005 when myself and another instructor were tasked with developing a policy and implementing a Patrol Officer Taser program for the Salt Lake City Police Department. This included training (and Tasing) hundreds of Police Officers. Prior to that time only the SWAT Team were issued Tasers. I had the good fortune of getting to Tase a Newspaper Reporter who wanted to know what all the fuss was about (pictured here)🤣. Current SLCPD Police Chief Mike Brown was my Captain at the time (pictured in the background along with now Assistant Chief Tim Doubt.)
