  • DISABLING ATTACKER WITH CANE

Weapons Demonstration with Grandmaster Roy Richmond

Sometimes the only object that a disabled person may have access to is a cane. A cane, often used in an assistive manner to aid in walking, to serve as a crutch, or to increase mobility can double as a weapon.

When used by disabled person who is sitting or wheelchair bound, the cane can be used to immobilize an attacker. Combined with upper body strength, speed, and “stick-it-between-the-legs-and-twist” manuever, an attacker can be surprised and immobilized as demonstrated by Grandmaster Roy Richmond.

Armand Metal Work & JW Designs Team up for a GREAT cause! Meet Sawyer "THE HURRICANE" Hannah an amazing girl who is about to receive the coolest dragster race cart for the DC sponsored Wonder Woman Run Series held in Chicago on June 21st 2020.
Sawyer suffers from EDS (Ehlers-Danlos-Syndrome) and has a difficult time walking. So when we heard about her story and that she wants to be a part of the Wonder Woman Run Series this spring, we didn't hesitate to do something about it! Armand Hammer Salin is an extremely talented artist who stepped up without any hesitation and said "I'M BUILDING HER A RACE CART" After hearing this I also said I'M IN! How fast can we get started on this? So here you have it! Half way done but could definitely use some additional funding to help make this the BADDEST race cart EVER! This couldn't be done without some teamwork, so we ask that you come join the team and make this an amazing day for Sawyer! ALL donations (ANY AMOUNT IS MUCH APPRECIATED) will be used to fund the rest of the cart build, any additional donations will be donated to the EDS Society. Any donations over $25 will have your name on the cart, and any companies who donate $100 or more will have their LOGO displayed on the cart during race time! Let's fill this up with as many names and logos as we can and make it look like a real dragster! I created a PayPal donations page on the Armand Metal Work website (listed above) any donation is much appreciated!
We Thank you

PLEASE SHARE and help spread the word! #godfirst #welder #wheelchair #wheelchairlife #wheelchairgirl #art #dragster #welding #weldernation #fabrication #custom

  • Last year, I saw a post where a wheelchair user used a runners leash to walk her dog. I thought that it looked like a great idea and bought one on Amazon. I ignored the fact that her dog weighed less than 10 pounds. 🙄

This afternoon, I attempted to take advantage of the beautiful weather by taking Mya on a nice, leisurely walk. I snapped the leash around my waist and away we went. At first, it was going as I imagined, but as soon as we turned the corner, she walked me as she attempted to pee on everything in sight. 🤣 Going up the hills weren't too bad, but going down the hills were a little scary. I guess she was just as excited as I was to leave the house. If you are a wheelchair user, what leash do you use to walk your dog?

  • I recently came across this post on Facebook:
Please stop sharing those videos of disabled kids walking for the first time. I can guarantee you some of those kids are experiencing pain while doing it.

They push themselves to do it because adults place walking and disabled children assimilating to an abled bodied society above their child’s comfort.

Their approval is a reward so disabled kids and adults will push themselves to the extreme for your applause because they’ve learned to “act normal” despite the pain.
My memory goes straight to having to walk again after hip surgery. Crying because it hurt but my therapist said you can do it. My mom said you can do it! I can recall good therapy moments and bad. I think an important lesson I learned from a therapist was there is good pain and bad pain and listen to your body with both.

I’m feeling this climb today in muscles that needed to be pushed. I’m feeling that good pain!!! And taking it easy today. I wanted to give up after this video stopped I got to a spot I thought my body can’t do that!! I even tried to but the wonderful people @abilities_expo wouldn’t let me. They cheered me on.... they pushed me, Wes pushed me, and I moved on and I rang that bell twice!!! I learned I could do something I didn’t think I could. Hopefully I can do it again someday.

Most people agreed with that above statement on Facebook, one person told me I have no clue what it’s like to be disabled (lol) and that’s okay because not all of us are the same. This group had so many different ways of getting up this wall. Even if you can’t use your legs! This was just one path of getting up, it’s okay to have yours but I think what we need to learn is no one’s path is better than the persons next to them.

  • There are big differences in the quality of carers. And I don't mean the „professional“ quality (although there are certainly huge differences), but the interpersonal quality.
.
I myself am very lucky when it comes to my main helpers (patience and non-judgmental understanding are extremely important to me), but I also know the opposite:
.
I find it absolutely inappropriate and unpleasant, when „help“ is executed so impatiently and mechanically that I get stressed because I am perhaps not fast enough.
.
If nurses, as soon as they have one foot in my front door, are obviously already thinking about leaving the apartment, having a break / cigarette or being with the next patient, this is not helpful – on the contrary.
Most of the time my physical strength deteriorates due to stress, and that doesn't make it any easier or faster.
.
In addition, in such hasty situations I usually can't immediately remember all the things that have to be done for me or that I need help with (there won’t be anyone around for the next few hours). This only occurs to me when I get my head together again – and by then the help is already gone.
.
When help is mainly about „somehow managing something“ - no matter how I feel about it - I usually need some time afterwards until I get a clear head again, get rid of the anger about it and feel comfortable again.
Fortunately, I only have to resort to this kind of „care“ in exceptional situations.
