  • My name is wheelchair. I'm around 12kg, well maybe closer to 20 but I tell people I'm 12kg as it makes me feel hard-core.
Whenever I go to the airport, I get really excited because I am king. The blob that inhabits my comfortable interior usually gets all the attention, but here, it's different. I rule.
I know, I shouldn't get all petty because even when I'm out with blob, people often say 'look at the wheelchair'. I love it. It's all about me. Brilliant.
Sometimes I feel sorry for blob, but then I remember, were it not for me, blob would be pancake-blob; an immovable pile of goop skulking around the ground. I give blob class, style and freedom. I know, blob is lucky to have me.
The moment I love most is when they announce me over the airport speaker system 'can the wheelchair board now please before the passengers'. I know blob gets a little grumpy that I get my moment of glory. Part of me feels a little sorry for it, but as the gooey part of this cyborg team, I am the stronger and more obvious choice.
I may not be flying for a while as I hear that blob and the other blobs are vulnerable to some microscopic spec, but that's ok. I'm a wheelchair, I'm titanium, invincible and beautiful. I'm sure it won't be long before I hear those words 'look at the wheelchair... wheelchair in isle 2... can the wheelchair fit into the lift... take the wheelchair around the back entrance... oh yes baby'. Ah, love it.

  • The thing about pool that fascinates me and keeps me interested? The fact that pool is a game that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone. There are no limits to that.
This is a local player in Ventura named Wynn. No matter how different everyone is from each other, (which is a good thing) we all share the same passion and for the most part, it brings us together.

  • The world is feeling like a heavy place.
.
.
[Photo description: Jess, sitting in an armchair, looking down discouraged]
.
I often feel the weight of society quite heavily, from a failing medical system to the injustices faced by friends and family and people in my community. I'm not somebody who can know something happens and then just let it go, I look at it from multiple perspectives. If there's one thing chronic illness has taught me, it's that almost everything is more complicated than we'd like to think.
.
I've always been really analytical, so numbers and statistics stick in my head like glue. Between complex thinking and an analytical mind, the events going on right now hit me hard and don't let go easily. I'm sure this is a feeling echoed by many, and one that is weighing on all of us right now. This weekend I managed to shake it off, to focus on my own work and my friends, but today it's come back strong, and I'm feeling it pretty hard right now.
.
So I'm praying, and I'm keeping an open dialogue going with the people I love, and I'm trusting that it will pass. In the meantime though, if you're feeling the weight of the world right now, know that I am with you ❤

  • “I am going to start with by saying, I promise I am going to try not to cry while writing this. Flashback to 2007, you are sitting with your parents, "am I in trouble?", "are they getting divorced?" WHAT IS GOING ON! They tell you, Dad has mytonic dystrophy. What is mytonic dystrophy exactly? Basically a muscle weakness. You can't die from it. But your life is cut considerably less, because you are going to be getting weaker. The man I love more than anything, my hero, my rock, my strength, my #1, my dad *here come the water works* has mytonic dystrophy. Now fast forward. At a glimpse, my dad has done so many things for me. How to ride a bike, make science projects fun, try to learn manual *bad idea😂*, mend a broken heart, you name it, even including walk me down the aisle to the love of my life. I am raising awareness to muscular dystrophy, because yes he may be weaker and time is limited. But without my dad, I wouldn't have my superman and the strongest man I know.” @rachelcpennington 💚 #awarecauses

  • I’m soooo excited to share this video with all of you! I’ve been working on it for a couple weeks, and I’m thrilled to see it finally come together.
I get a lot of questions about what the ADA says, and to be perfectly honest I didn’t know many of the details until I did all the research for this video. Although we still have a ways to go, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come in only 30 years.
I hope that you enjoy my presentation and learn from it too! ♿️ If you find it helpful, please take a minute to share it with someone else, and don’t forget to subscribe to my channel ❤️ You can find the video at the link in my bio

  • And more #QuarantineShorts to wrap up the week, from @harmanierose (we're going to have to start keeping count of participating countries!) -- it seems almost unbelievable that I was in #Vancouver just last month. ===================================
Music description: the music has a light string melody line with a quick syncopated beat that is accepted by piano cords. There is a sense of urgency and commitment to the music.
Visual description:
Harmanie is a white women with flowing blond hair, wearing a black lace top, seated in a titanium wheelchair with black seat cushions and wheels. The spokes are white and you can see a hint of gold as she moves. Her back is to us facing a white oblong structure with one line in indistingiushable black graffiti.
She eases forward, arms extended wide, opening and closing, using the close to turn and briefly glance at us.
She drifts in and out of the frame. Sharply pulls into a wheelie, then expands, reaching her arms up. One arm lifts up and oulls into a fist in front if her face.
Comes to the camera, tosses her head back, and reaches up. The camera tilts. The ground cones to the left, the world is sideways. Harmanie drifts away from us, her arms extended.
Extending and pulling her arms close, then up, all the time looking at us.
Turning and drifting to the white oblong. She makes contact and pushes away, turning with her body low and compact, she does a quick half turn she comes toward us, arms extended, head back.

  • A #QuarantineShorts contribution last week from @5678access --
==================================
Reposted from @5678access #Movement #Monday
“It’s the end of the road, I dance upon”
Lyric parody of song in video: “It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” by R.E.M., 1987 *I do not own any rights to the music*
The prompt is based upon @worldsoflaurel, changing it to #FilmSet, @wheelchairdancr’s #Rolling, and @superaleja’s #Widen. Music inspiration via @zeroluck86
==================================
Video Description: Dancing in a manual wheelchair, with one forearm crutch underneath my axle. My movements are a series of turns in various directions, with arm gestures mostly stretched out straight and wide, while circling all dimensions of my torso. Sometimes my movements are either in, or out of sync with the music. I am a thin white female, with pulled-back brown hair, wearing a navy blue jacket, cream scarf, maroon trousers, and Doc Martin shoes. Behind me as I dance, is the scenery of a dead-end street with a yellow diamond “End” road sign, wrought iron fence and baron tree branches against a pale blue sky. There is a cement road pylon blocking from sight three flights of concrete steps. On occasion during the video, there are two male athletes making cameo appearances as they complete a lap of running the up steps, then turn around to run back down. One person is wearing a hooded gray sweatshirt, the other one in a bright orange hooded sweatshirt. The dance ends in side profile with my arms in a diagonal line, one arm forward and up and the other down and back. Then I drop the pose and push on my wheels rolling towards the camera. =================================

The prompt is based upon @worldsoflaurel, changing it to #FilmSet, @wheelchairdancr’s #Rolling, and @superaleja’s #Widen. Music inspiration via @zeroluck86
    ==================================

Someone once asked me what the most difficult thing about our long road trips including wheelchair to the US is. That’s definitely all the planning in advance, especially regarding route, time management & hotel bookings – and of course finding out about the accessibility of the different places ♿️
.
Since I can't lift myself out of my wheelchair, can't take any steps or stand and therefore need help to go to the toilet as well as to shower, do the morning and evening rituals and go to bed, we always need a completely wheelchair and handicapped accessible room with roll-in-shower.
.
Because I never wanted to rely on finding exactly such a room on site, which then also has to be affordable & available (from 5 p.m. it becomes difficult to even get a „normal“ room in tourist areas), I always book the hotels from home.
.
To do this, I first have to determine the complete travel route and schedule it exactly, which looks like this:
.
1. Reading, reading, reading 🤓 Basic information procurement, what could be interesting in our targeted holiday area and at the same time is doable by wheelchair.
.
2. See if the different places of interest can be linked to each other in terms of routes & time frame (= many route calculations in google maps). If necessary some of them have to be deleted → I have the approximate route.
.
3. Estimating how long we’ll need at which places for sightseeing etc.
To estimate how much time we’ll need in national / state parks, I always have a look at the official websites, where there’s a section „accessibility“ (I LOVE America for that! Hooray for the ADA! ❤️ The rest of the world could take a leaf out of that book). There I read in advance what or which trail is doable for us with the wheelchair and how time consuming this could be. In some parks this can be a lot, in others it can be quite little. The information is often well prepared and therefore easy to estimate. This results in an approximate time window. I always save/download the guides, maps & Infos about wheelchair accessible trails/facilities during this process, so that I can deal with the parks in more detail later.
.

  • Something I’m learning: there’s no ‘right’ way to do life in a pandemic.
Of course, following government guidelines to protect yourself and others is always the right thing to do. However when it comes to everything else, there simply isn’t a ‘right’ way to go about it.
We are living through something none of us have ever experienced... write a book, learn a language, take up a new exercise regime... IF you WANT to. If you want to stay in bed and hide, eat ALL the snacks and binge watch Netflix... that’s really okay too. Do what you need to get through this time, and each second you push through, you’ll be a second closer to the end of this. Being kind to myself is something I always find difficult, but I’m finding it even trickier now. I’m trying to let the knowledge that there’s no ‘right’ way to do things free me.
