  • Vox Lux is a film with a lot of ideas and potential. There is a great film in there somewhere, it is not this one though.
Celeste is but a mere teenager when a tragedy kick starts her music career. Thrusting her into stardom at a very young age, we watch as the music industry and modern world shapes her. We then jump to many years later when Celeste is much older and on a comeback tour, after years of controversy and alcohol dependence.
Vox Lux has many ideas and themes it touches upon. Regarding celebrity culture, fandom culture, drug dependence, mental health and terrorism, the world that we find ourselves in today. The problem is that the film does not properly explore these, and this comes down to a couple of things. These ideas that the director puts forth firstly feels way to on the nose at times. It severely lacks subtly, especially with the terrisom/shootings aspect. It's ideas can also feel very surface level, none feel like they are explored to there full potential, or to the extent where they are truly engaging. This issue may be amplified by the fact that the periods we see in her life lack development or don't utilise the screen time.
There are sequences that I really did like though, which did have an impact and I found intriguing. The light philosophical banter we do get, the meaningful concrete city shots, the tunnel dream sequence and Willem Dafoe's narration. Though did we need narration? Could the director not of used more effective visual story telling?
The performances range from good to questionable. Jude Law is quite good in his smallish role as her talent agent. Natalie Portman though... If it was an intentional choice to highlight the lowest common denominator trash we make famous in the entertainment industry, which the character touches upon, she was fantastic. If not, it was an odd performance.
The original songs I did not vibe with either. Especially the ending which was slightly unbearable. Though kinda perfect if intentional, being true to pop culture today. But I do question wheather it was an intentional choice.
Vox Lux is a polarising watch, but one I currently feel it does not achieve what it aspires to be.

Overall 5/10

.
Nota: 4,0 / 5,0

  • #黑天后 (#VoxLux)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Natalie Portman

  • Why I Love Natalie Portman:
If you're a frequent visitor of my blog, you would certainly catch on the fact that I'm the biggest fan of Polish-Australian actress Mia Wasikowska, but you wouldn't miss my posts where I profess my love and appreciation for Natalie Portman. From the tender age of 15, back when celebrity rags used to be a thing, I first discovered Natalie in a profile piece about her short career. She was just starting to make a name for herself pre Star Wars stardom. I saw that face and thought to myself: This is easily the most beautiful celebrity I have ever seen in my life. Her bone structure is too good to be true; her voice is raspy and matches her stunning physique. But Natalie is more than just a beautiful face. She has the smarts to match her stunning features. She graduated from Harvard with a degree in psychology. For most actors like herself, being a movie star would suffice, but she chose to get an education, and that's utterly respectable. She doesn't get into feuds with other celebrities and mostly keeps her private life, well, private. Her acting abilities are a force to be reckoned with. From her raw and innocent performance in The Professional to her Oscar winning turn in Black Swan, I'm yet to see a bad performance by her. All her movie roles have a redeeming quality about them and that makes you root for them; well except for Anne Boleyn in the The Other Boleyn Girl, but you get my point. I love watching movies and have a lot of admiration for some celebrities, but truth be told, I don't particularly feel like meeting any of them, except for Natalie, but even then, if I got a chance, I would only say hi to her and leave her alone so that she wouldn't think I'm some crazy stalker, which I'm not I promise.
