  • What a year it’s been. We are proud to say that we have raised £2500 for Beacon Centre for the Blind. This surpasses any fundraising total to date and we are so proud to have helped a fantastic charity that assists those with visual impairment. Our year has been turbulent, but one that we feel has been successful and has allowed us to learn and grow for the future. We have more exciting news coming in the next few weeks so stay tuned! We cannot thank our supporters, sponsors and donors enough and we look forward to working with you all in 2020! #TheWhistleFoundation #OneRichardEades #visualimpairment #beacon #football #referee #golfday #marathon

Darf ich fragen was du hast?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Ich habe eine Sehbehinderung und bin Paraschwimmerin. ⁣
⁣⁣

  • Seriously, how’d I get so lucky?! 😍
A day in her new glasses and we’re already seeing a big difference in Maisie’s sight.
She is certainly loving seeing the world in detail and has been a busy girl taking it all in.
Thank you beautiful people for all the love for Maisie and her new glasses ❤️🤓 as always we are overwhelmed with your kindness!

  • Our first attempt at a social story for a student who is both deaf and blind, who utilizes ASL and reads Braille to communicate. Learning the language for emotions and states of being such as “tired”, “mad”, “sad”, and “happy” requires continuous modeling and use of the signs during those emotional times. The student is learning to read each word and sign, and hopefully soon will use this social story as a tool be able to choose a preferred activity when they feel these ways. If anyone has any suggestions for manipulative or tactile materials for learners with visual impairments, we’d love to hear what works for you! #specialeducation #speechlanguagetherapy #ashaigers #aacslp #visualimpairment #speechtherapyideas #americansignlanguage #slplife #schoolslp #aacliteracy

  • I want to start with a picture of me in a very common spot to introduce myself.
This picture is taken in my hometown #Braunschweig in #Germany where I lived almost my entire life with my family. In the picture I am standing at a bus stop which belongs to the excellent service of the public transport system I used a lot since I can not drive. The reason for that is that in Germany you have to have a vision of at least 70% of regular vision to get a drivers license.

  • If you're looking for a positive and customized treatment experience for your child, you've come to the right place. Plasticity® Brain Centers has an extensive history of treating children.⁣
⁣
For today's #FrontiersFridays, we'll reflect on the treatment administered to five clients aged 4 to 6 years old. They came to us with Anoxic Brain Injuries which cause oxygen deprivation in the brain and visual impairment.⁣
⁣
The last thing a parent wants is to see their child struggle. That's why we create customized treatment plans for your little ones. We're happy to report that the five children in this study exited treatment with more eye movements and improvement in visual performance. Want to learn more about this effective treatment? Visit the link in our bio. ⁣

  • This little snuggler doesn't even know he's being TRICKED right now. Since early NICU days, Jaxon has only ever looked to the left. Partly as a result of positional plagiocephaly from having to lay on that side after his multiple brain surgeries (to keep weight off the right side during recovery period when very small - now not a concern). And partly because... who knows?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have pushed our public PTs about torticollis but assured it wasn't that, that he just looked to the left as a "neurological thing". Also possible with his brain damage/CP/various other brain issues goin' on.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We do the traditional torticollis stretches multiple times a day because hey it can't hurt, and chiro, too. And try to do lots of right side-laying, but so far in 20 months, nothing has really changed. As a result, he has severe flat head and his ears are misaligned and there are noticeable facial changes too. Contrary to popular belief (i.e. all the docs I've mentioned it to), it's not just cosmetic. It can affect vision. His jaw is misaligned. Talk about dentist bills for that later in life... And simple things, like try to find a bike helmet or a pair of glasses when your ears are vastly different.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And no, before you comment, he is not able to get a reshaping helmet. I tried, even privately at a cost of $8,000+ but no one will touch him without neurosurgery signoff (which they will not). So, we try our best.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Jaxon hates the stretches, cries every time, multiple times a day as I hold the position for 30-60 seconds. Gotta be done.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But my husband has created a "cheating" way... he smooches J and gradually pushes his head over the other way. Jaxon is so excited about the snuggles that he doesn't even cry. 😂Of course it's not the same as an "actual" torticollis stretch, but it's a nice way to get more stretching in the day! ❤️

  • North beach, Iona.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Which is probably why I chose to sign up to @instagram five years ago. I am drawn to images more than I am articles, tweets and blogs. And I am no good at writing captions so I try to let my photographs tell a story on their own.
I came across a post from @RNIB about the Alternative Text option on Instagram that I wasn't aware of. It made me realise how easy this is for me compared to people with #VisualImpairment who may not have that ease of access. Instagram will now automatically create text for your photos or you can do it yourself so those with any kind of #sightloss can hear what's in an image as they scroll through their feed.
Obviously I can't be the judge of whether this will make a difference but if it is a step towards more equal access for everyone then surely that's a good thing? So...I'm going to try harder to make my photos accessible - blind people use Instagram too #RNIBSeeDifferently
