  • There are three parts to ensuring that the bridge is good.
Firstly, the contact area of the bridge feet must fully touch (ie. snug tightly) the belly of the instrument. A snugged bridge to the belly unhindered vibrations being transferred to the soundbox. Moreover, the bridge will be less susceptible to slip out of place, thus optimising the vibrations generated in the top plate and backplate improving the tone quality of the instrument.

Secondly, the height of the bridge and the curvature at the top part of the bridge. The bridge holds the strings vertically at the correct height above the fingerboard and horizontally the correct distance from the other strings. The correct height will ensure easier playability especially when pressing the string, if the height is too high, discomfort is being experienced when the strings are being pressed, on the other hand, if the height is too low, the tone of the violin will sound muffled, like 'choked'. The correct distance between the strings optimises playability, especially when it's string crossing.

Thirdly, and most importantly, the quality of the bridge blank. A bridge blank is a wooden blank that is in the shape of a bridge that has not been fitted to the instrument. In general, aged wood with tighter wooden grains is ideal as bridge blanks. These characteristics make the structural integrity of the bridge better, allowing Shaojun to thin the bridge that results in an improvement of the instrument's tone and volume.

So if you are thinking of improving the tone quality of your instrument, you can consider coming down to visit Shaojun and strike a discussion with him!
Stay tuned and continue to watch this space as more topics about set up will be discussed in the next few posts.

PS: The SALES is still ongoing till 20th Jan 2020. Come on down if you need a new instrument or a bow, Shaojun has a wide range that you can choose from.

  • Last year in April, Shaojun was invited to Brunei by Essential Music to share his expertise as a Luthier. He covered topics like, making a violin, violin maintenance and what to look out for when buying a violin.

It was a great success! The audiences enjoyed the shared knowledge and the teachers at Essential Music managed to used his instruments and bows to translate what he shared into something that can be seen and heard by the audiences.

This year, he was invited back to Brunei for the 24th Consumer Fair (@consumerfair.bn) to set up a booth where he will be showcasing his instruments and conduct instrument a series of talks. It will be one of the largest consumer fairs in Brunei. There will be music programmed during the fair where his instruments will be used for the performances

An exciting start for 2020!

PS: The sales is still ongoing till 20 Jan 20. Come on down and try the instruments out or strike a conversation with Shaojun regarding what can be done to improve your instrument playability and tone.

  • Fixing a crack is not an easy task, it's often time-consuming that can take up to a week before the client gets their instrument back.
-
Depending on the seriousness of the crack, Shaojun will have to access whether to open the instrument or not.
-
Based on this picture, Shaojun will need to open up the instrument. This involves melting the glue connecting the plate to the ribs.
-
The 'melting' process may take several hours depending on how much glue is being applied and the quality of the glue that is applied.
-
Then, the wood is sealed back into its original position via hide or wood glue. Clamps are placed on the area, allowing the glue to solidify, holding the wood together.
-
After the glue dries, Shaojun will clean up the excess glue that oozes to the side. This involves sanding away the oozed Cleats are added to strengthen the hold of the hide glue, they are to prevent the crack from splitting.
-
The instrument will be sealed and the set-up for the client to collect their restored instrument.

  • [Spirit and Oil Varnish]

There is a lot of literature that compares which is better between oil and spirit varnish. However, in general, probably the biggest difference between them is the speed that they dry.

The oil varnish is made by mixing a drying oil + resin. In general, once the drying oil is exposed to oxygen, the oil evaporates and dries. Some makers would include plant-based oil to allow the varnish to have a pleasant scene, like using lavender oil, or flower-based oil.

Spirit varnish is made by mixing seedlac (a secretion my the lac bug!) + solvent (alcohol). Once applied, it tends to dry quickly (due to the alcoholic properties), and thus, is often preferred for touch up as multiple coats are applied to achieve desired colour and thickness.

Colour pigment is often added into the two types of varnish during the 'cooking' process. To bring out the aesthetics of the violin through colour hues, multiple coats of varnishes are applied, allowing light to show the colour gradient of the varnish on the violin.

In Singapore, Shaojun prefers the instrument varnish to be spirit-based because it dries faster and is more stable than oil varnish due to the humidity. In the shop, he will ensure that the colour pigment matches the same based on the wood to ensure that the violin was restored to its original state.

  • Yesterday we were again in Mainz and visited Peter Körner-Violinmaker. @peter_koerner_geigenbaumeister 🎻♥️
And now Vladimir is very very happy!!🎉👻👻 here is a violin, made by Peter Körner.
Varnish of pleasure, whim of velvet, tenderness and refined subtlety, great responsiveness and feeling of a partner ,this Violin on which Im very lucky to play now-just a dream)))! I can not tear myself away from this violin, because there are so many colors and all sorts of shades in it that I simply drown there with smile and continiusly happines . She is superb in the hand, and with first touch give very warm answer and wonderful fly of sound. I don’t feel any extra weight when I going upstairs, she answers and pours paints like impressionist brushes while imitating emerald colors of happiness and all kind of possible bright colors and their various shades.
