  • “Support your local vet, buy a bulldog!” 🐾

We already know how problematic they are. One of their biggest issues is canine atopic dermatitis. An inherited predisposition to hypersensitivity reactions to environmental allergens.
Atopic dogs will scratch, chew, lick or rub areas of the body such as their paws, face and rear end. They can have recurrent skin, ear and anal gland inflammation and infections. The itchy behaviour can cause hair loss and reddening and thickening of the skin.
Parasites, such as fleas, or infection from bacteria or yeast can all worsen the level of itching from allergies. Therefore, it is important to treat any other health problems that could cause itching to manage your pet’s allergies.
This baby girl had a number of problems: generalized demodicosis, Mallasezia (auricular) and Staphylococcus (cutaneous and auricular). The first photo was taken prior to any treatment. The second one was taken one weak after we started the protocol and the last one was taken after three weeks, and you can see how much better she looks and how happy she is! ❤️

.
Unfortunately, she doesn’t love for me to perform veterinary services on her 🤣🤣 Her family is cool and understands the value of sedated exams. It allows me to be able to be thorough, and then we are able to perform services stress-free such as venipuncture or vaccinations.
.
I have been out in practice 5.5 years, and Fear Free certification changed me for the better! It taught me how to see things that I thought were acceptable through the eyes of my patients. This program is going to revolution VetMed, and I challenge every vet/vet-tech student or vet professional to do the course 🤓
.
Imagine being a cat, and you are suddenly grabbed roughly by your scruff and shaken while someone draws blood on your inner thigh?
.
Imagine being a cat and being dropped off all day for services, and you are stuck next to a smelly, barking dog?
.
Imagine being a cat, and you are suddenly put on your back on the x-ray table, while loud noises and bright lights flash above you?
.
We CAN control these situations and keep our patients 😃 happy.
.
What are some of YOUR fear free tips and tricks to share with the vet community and myself!? And GO...

  • 🦠Clin path/necropsy rotation: initial thoughts ⠀
⠀
During my final year of vet school I really want to track each rotation and what I’m feeling throughout. I know I won’t love each one, I might not even like some, but that’s life. All I know, is that I love many different aspects of veterinary medicine and I strive to do my best in each facet because it’s 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 eventually! I’m quite interested to see how my feelings change during the year between each rotation! I’m excited to have you all on this journey with me 👩🏼‍⚕️⠀
⠀
So let’s get to it. ⠀
⠀
I got to spend two days last week on this rotation and now two days this week. The mornings (9am-12pm) are spent in clinical pathology where we go over anything from basic cell morphology and techniques to cases. I enjoy this because I can practice things I’m rusty on, but it is a bit dull only because we aren’t in the hustle and bustle of seeing appointments. The necropsy aspect of the rotation goes from 1-5pm(ish - depends on cases) and I LOVE this part of it! I’m not the best at pathology, but it’s always been something so interesting to me. There has been a wide range of cases so far, so it excites me to go in each day to see what we have! While many of the cases are sad, I find it nice to hopefully be able to give the owners a more definitive answer for their loss. ⠀
⠀
Main pros of this rotation:⠀
🦠 I get to sleep in!⠀
🦠 it’s quite relaxed, which is great for a first rotation!⠀
🦠 you never know what cases will be brought in - if you love mystery, path is for you!⠀
🦠 I get to rock my @wearfigs which is a huge bonus!
🦠 the clinicians are amazingly nice and funny, plus my colleagues have been exceptionally nice ☺️⠀
⠀
Do you like path/clin path? I’d love to hear your thoughts below ⬇️⠀

  • Lately, I don’t have much to talk about.
I’m in my 9th month of practicing now.
I’m kind of leaving the new grad phase.

Do I still need help? Sometimes.
Do I need intensive mentorship? Not really.
A lot of time investment when I first started means that I’m pretty capable of handling most things, or figuring it out when I’m not sure.
It’s always available to me still though - when I get new cases or something weird, I always have the help I need to work through it. What you need out of mentorship changes as you grow into your role! I’m still just as thankful for it though.

So I guess what I’m saying is that it DOES get better. You never stop learning but managing cases is much easier with time. It’s a steep uphill climb at first but there is light at the end of that tunnel!

I can work alone all day and not call for help.
I can run into new cases and feel confident in my ability to figure it out, use available resources and make appropriate decisions without needing help.
I move through my day without being overwhelmed by self doubt.
Imposter syndrome has no place here.
I can handle most emergency cases with a little help from Vincyclopedia.

Mostly, I feel like I’ve “got this”. Until I don’t - and that’s ok. That’s why I work in a bigger practice. Lots of people to help me out!

Did I think I’d feel this way a year ago? Nope. Never ever ever 😅
But I hustled my butt off and worked hard every day to get to this point.

I don’t know it all. I know I never will.
There’s always more to learn and see and do.
Some days I won’t “have it”. That’s ok.
What I know NOW is... I’m totally capable of figuring it out 🥰
