  • 💁🏻 DO YOU HAVE A STRATEGY? 💁🏻

This is something that I must have been born with because I've noticed that other people don't think the same way I do. I have a strategy for EVERYTHING...literally everything. I also have contingency plans on top of contingency plans 😂

Although things haven't always gone my way in life, I always have a plan ready to roll with the punches and turn disappointment into opportunity.

Having a strategy can mean the difference between landing that job you've been dreaming of or settling for what you can get.

When I work with my clients we go through their past experience, see how it can be leveraged and then tailor their portfolio and job hunt materials to the companies and jobs they want.

Being intentional about where you're applying and why is a much better strategy than applying to every single job you see out of desperation with no unique selling point.

With a clear job-hunting strategy you can:

👉 Leverage your past work experience as a strength
👉 Attract companies with the same values as you
👉 Feel confident about the work you are showcasing
👉 Fill out fewer applications (quality over quantity)

Do you need help figuring out your job hunting strategy?

Join the UX Career Compass waitlist for first dibs to join the next cohort that kicks off at the end of March! Waitlist members get access to a pre-sale that will start next Wednesday with a big discount.

  • It was the first-ever AirAsia's design event, the RedUX. We held it outside of the office sphere. Thanks to our partner @google who made it possible by sharing their office space.

As we work for companies that have the potential to create a valuable ecosystem for our customers, it’s our job to bring empathy and humanise the systematic processes that make our businesses run. We believe that by having a space for sharing, learning, and networking, we can create a spark to get everyone interested in user experience.

We are currently hiring UX Designers to be based in Kuala Lumpur. Head on over to shorturl.at/ewyPY

  • ⚡️ TUESDAY TIPS ⚡️

EVERYONE has "experience" that they can apply to their career transition. It can come in the form of past work experience and even your unique life experiences.

I was a graphic designer for 10 years before I transitioned into UX and while that experience was extremely valuable, employers were often more impressed with my life experience and passion projects.

How to work WITH your past experience:

⭐️ Find industries that you can directly apply your past experience to (ex. if you worked in banking/finance your experience would be extremely valuable in FinTech companies!)

⭐️ Document all the unique skills you have learned that you can directly apply to your new UX career (companies value diverse skills outside of design!)

⭐️ Get killer recommendations from your past employers and co-workers (companies want to make sure you are a culture fit outside of having the UX skills for the job)

⭐️ Embrace your past experience like a best friend instead of seeing it as a hindrance!

For whoever needs to hear this, YOU ARE HIRABLE and your past experience matters!

Let me know how you're incorporating your past experience into your careers in the comments 👇

  • Your portfolio should be memorable and should set you apart from others. The number 1 way to be remembered is through a story! “Research shows that messages delivered as stories can be 22 times more memorable than facts” - Noah Zandan, Quantified Communications.
Instead of explaining every step you took in the process, talk about specific takeaways that helped you connect the dots that led to your final outcome. Be aware of your readers, hiring managers typically only have a few minutes to review your portfolio, so engage them within the first few sentences to entice the reader to read on.

If you have trouble with storytelling, there are TONS of resources online to help you understand how to craft a great story and you don’t need to be naturally gifted to do so!

  • ⚡️ TUESDAY TIPS ⚡️

So you want to become a UX/UI designer because you want to make the world a better place (you should watch Silicon Valley). GREAT, so does EVERYONE ELSE on the planet right now.

The market is busting at the seams right now with entry-level and junior designers. I'm not saying this to deter you, I'm saying this to set your expectations and bring you into the reality of the situation.

I see a lot of people jump into a full-time Bootcamp with a 5-figure price tag with unrealistic expectations of what will happen when they graduate and come out the other side. The unicorns and rainbows vanish and the 3+ month job hunt grind kicks in along with its friends' imposter syndrome, burnout and chronic stress.

If you are currently switching into UX or have already, PLEASE work on and develop the following skills. THESE are what will get you the job, NOT your Bootcamp or school certification.

The skills you need to job hunt in 2020:

👉 PASSION for what you do and a thirst to keep learning and adding to your portfolio with self-initiated projects

👉 SELLING yourself and connecting the dots for hiring managers and recruiters as to why you are the best candidate for the job

👉 ONLINE PRESENCE that demonstrates your passion, skills and community involvement

👉 BUSINESS STRATEGY and embracing the fact that you are being hired to make a company money and improve their bottom line to pay for your salary and future improvements for their users

👉 THICK SKIN for the countless rejections you will face before you land your first role #truthhurts

👉 RECIPROCITY and a good attitude

Agree? Disagree? Hit me with it in the comments 👇

  • If you are a copywriter or a UX professional who can write well, then you must read this article - https://uxplanet.org/are-copywriters-same-as-ux-writers-f59e03c6cc0d .

As the article says - Are UX writers same as Copy Writers? The core remains the same. The focus is different.

A copywriter’s job is to inform, educate, convince and sell. A UX copywriter’s job is to help the user solve his problem, use the product and help him have fun using the product.

Just wanted to introduce myself and my face •
From a small city in the South East of the UK called London, I gained two degrees in humanities and social sciences before I realized I couldn’t help but follow my dad’s footsteps into sales. After [number removed] years in London (with small stints in Canterbury and Brighton), I’m now chasing the American Dream in New York, swapping Shoreditch for Williamsburg, and G&Ts for Margaritas. •
I recruited across strategy and innovation in London and New York before joining Orbis’ product and design team recruiting across UX, UI and product design, and UX research. It’s been great joining a team so committed to growth, listening to ideas, and focused on delivering the best customer experience across the board.
•
I am a ‘jack of all trades’ when it comes to hobbies, I run marathons, cycle centurions, and (reluctantly) do open water swims, I’m mediocre at field hockey, have my WSET Level 2 Certificate, am currently learning Portuguese, shamelessly listen to true crime podcasts and, like everyone, enjoy eating – specifically pizza, dumplings and pistachio ice cream, but I’ll eat anything really.
•
I don’t like to take myself too seriously, and am always open to a chat so don’t hesitate to get in touch to discuss all things design, innovation or any mentioned pass times.

  • The JTBD concept in a nutshell! ⚡️🥜 (of course in order to apply this technique further readings and research is advised ☝🏻) 👌🏻 On the short: The power of the JTBD technique is that it helps the innovator understand that customers don't buy products and services, but instead they “hire” various solutions at various times to get a wide array of jobs done. So here’s the theory and high-level steps this technique entails:
There are two different types of JTBDs:
1. Main jobs to be done, which describe the task that customers want to achieve.
2. Related jobs to be done, which customers want to accomplish in conjunction with the main jobs to be done.
Then, within each of these two types of JTBDs, there are:
* Functional job aspects—the practical and objective customer requirements.
* Emotional job aspects—the subjective customer requirements related to feelings and perception.

Finally, emotional job aspects are further broken down into:
* Personal dimension—how the customer feels about the solution.
* Social dimension—how the customer believes he or she is perceived by others while using the solution. •

Step 1: Identify a Focus Market
Step 2: Identify Jobs Customers Are Trying to Get Done
Step 3: Categorize the Jobs to be Done
Step 4: Create Job Statements
Step 5: Prioritize the JTBD Opportunities
