  • JUST TRY - It's New Years Eve and my resolution is to try, over and over again.
I will try to dance more. In life and dancing, there is so much I want to do, learn and express and therein so many opportunities to fuck up, cry/laugh at myself and try over again. What have I got to lose really? Surely it's better to try and fail, than to never try at all? I know what not trying feels like... You know who I love dancing with the most? People who don't care how they look. It's not about perfection and performance, it's about feeling the vibrations from the speakers in your chest, feeling yourself and the flow and those moments when you look at your tribe across the dancefloor and you've all truly let go and nothing matters but this song. Bliss.

In each moment, I'm going to try my best and just be me and surrender.💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾🇺🇬❤💛🖤 #authenticity #flow #tribe #kigandadance #ugandandancers #africandance #bawsy #dancersofinstagram #art #ugandanculture #artforsale #arttherapy #artclasslondon #blackgirlsrock

  • My cousin Kalule Emmanuel at his father's Lumbe(Last funeral rites) in Uganda where he was named as his father's heir. This is a traditional ceremony performed by us in Buganda culture when a father has died. These are highlights from my Christmas in Uganda last week. He is wearing a Kanzu, Suit jacket and some traditional Bark cloth this ceremonial attire is a blend of old and new, very effective...#Lumbe #uganda🇺🇬 #UgandanCulture #Buganda #family #christmas2019 #Kawempe

  • Many folks know me for teaching / speaking about storytelling and know that I always emphasize the importance of owning one’s narratives. In fact, the proverb to which I refer most frequently is “Until the Lioness tells her story, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” But few people know that my late father, Dr. John Ruganda, was one of East Africa’s preeminent playwrights (lookup his Wikipedia page). Yesterday I stopped in to the Aristoc bookstore in Acacia Mall in Kampala, and I was thrilled not only to see one of my father’s plays on display, but also to find a book that I’ve been searching for on African Philosophy, along with two bookshelves full of works by other Ugandan authors.
It’s important that we support African authors writing about Africans, as a way to balance out the other narratives out there!

  • #fbf It was cultural week this past week in Agnes’ class, and nothing says “Uganda” like #chapati! 🇺🇬 .
.

The East African Chapati is very similar to the Indian Paratha (one of the most popular unleavened flatbreads in India). .
.
It has a delicious but subtle flavor that is why it can be easily paired with almost any dish whether sweet or savory making it an extremely versatile side dish staple. It’s definitely one of our family’s favorites. 🥘 .

  • KIGANDA DANCERS - When I was younger, a real highlight of long family events were the traditional Kiganda dancers. The dancers perform in a simple formation, the complexity was reserved for the shaking and rotating of the hips. As the tempo of the drums increases, so does the hip shaking - amplified by the fur or straw skirt tied around the waist. The pros are impossibly fast, the amateurs like me, would tie a jacket around our waist and try our best!
