  • The Bolson tortoise was recently uplisted from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Thankfully, the Turtle Conservancy, along with partners HABIO A.C., Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC), and Rainforest Trust partnered on a deal to purchase an 18,850-acre former cattle ranch in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert, which will be converted into a desert-grassland wildlife refuge.
This purchase was made possible by grants and other support from a partnership formed by the Turtle Conservancy, Rainforest Trust, Global Wildlife Conservation, and several private donors. As many as 200 bird species, 70 mammal species, 44 reptile species, and 8 amphibian species use this newly protected habitat. Grasslands also remain a significant carbon sink for North America’s battle against climate change, showing again how saving turtles can save the planet!! .

  • Managing the last remaining habitat for the critically endangered Bolson Tortoise (Gopherus flavomarginatus), the largest of the North American terrestrial reptiles, is both a privilege and a commitment. This tortoise has been known to science only since 1959, and inhabits a small area of Bolsón de Mapimí in the Chihuahuan Desert of Mexico. The Mapimí Biosphere Reserve was created to protect this species, but much of this land is used for agricultural development and cattle grazing, which is threatening the tortoise’s habitat. That’s why we recently purchased even more of this habitat, and are always working to expand that protection, which also extends to all other native flora and fauna, including an estimated 70 mammals, over 200 bird species, 8 amphibians, and 44 reptiles!
