  • My anxiety has been sky high the last couple of days and I’ve used all my coping skills and drinking this hot chocolate unexpectedly led to some relief. Ahhhh. I had fully expected it was not going to budge so this is really nice.

Because of the kind of trauma I’ve experienced, and some unique chronic stress in my life, I usually whiz through fight and flight and I freeze very quickly. Another way to say this would be that my depression consists of trapped anxiety. This feels like an oppressive fatigue, physical weakness, numbness/inability to feel my body (which sometimes overlaps with dissociation) while a swarm of anxiety buzzes around my head and jabs my heart. It’s also difficult to breathe.
.

As stressful as this field is (and, let me tell you, it’s ridiculous right now) I also feel grateful that I can understand myself from a clinical perspective and, to an extent, treat myself. I am not anxious or depressed about any one thing and I am not choosing this brain and body response. This is a natural and normal neurological response based on the experiences I’ve had and my current environment.
.

So many patients have told me they assume my life is always great and I handle things so easily and nothing could be further from the truth. The prefrontal cortex (more rational part and place for organizing, critical thinking, decision making, and moving from “I want to do that” to actually doing “that”) and amygdala (survival: fight flight freeze emotional center) are different parts and they “talk” with each other less during times of danger/panic/distress.

I have made so much progress in my own healing journey, it’s honestly incredible that I’ve been able to come this far. I also have so much further to go.
.

Here’s to normalizing any way you happen to be feeling. I’m off to enjoy this hot bath. 🛁 🥰

  • Today's exercise is a deeper expanded heart breathwork exercise.
Yesterday we talked about how the heartbrain connection when in a coherent state can effect the energy of those around us and the earth we live on.

Remember we often think of the body as a sum of parts, of organs, of cells. 
The building blocks of those cells are atoms.
And when we look at what makes up an atom we see that most of it is energy with only a small percentage being matter. 
When it comes down to it we are truly energetic beings. 
We live in a truly energetic ecosystem. 
The sun, the Earth, the trees, the animals, the plants and the other humans around us are all part of this energetic ecosystem, swapping electrons cross the globe in a beautiful dance of connection.

What we feed into this energetic system is important, especially in times like these. 
That's not to say that it's not okay to be scared or angry or sad or anxious. 
It's to say that we can move past that, that we're designed to heal and the earth is here to help us. 🌎🌍🌏 #heartbrain #loveheals #trauma #quantumbiology

You are going to be very sorry we ever met! I am going to turn your life upside down, take away things, turn people against you and steal your identity. You won't know who you are any more. 
You will have to start all over! I will turn you into an infant who doesn't know how to chew or swallow. I will make sure you have to learn how to walk, talk, and read again. I will take the things you love to do like reading, writing, driving, your job, your career, relationships and so much away from you. Your health now belongs to me. 
You will work hard by going through months of rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and years of pain and sadness. You will have horrendous headaches, and I even steal your dreams.
You may think when you leave the hospital you will be free of me, but I haven't even started yet. You will completely depend on your people, yes, I stole all your independence along with your dignity, and your ability to do the things you love to do. 
You will be questioned for not being able to drive, understand and rationalize emotions, and much more. I show up unexpectedly and make you awkward and uncomfortable in public.
Had enough? Too bad because I am going to make noise unbearable, bright lights extremely painful, make you feel like you are going crazy, and I'm even going to put thoughts and ideas in your head and you won't know what's real or pretend.
I am brain injury, you will be sorry we ever met.
Some cases are less severe and some cases are left in a vegetative state. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of them every day. I am grateful and determined and have the most amazing supportive people who fight by my side every day. I love you and couldn't do this without you.

  • So many of you are resonating with my last post on bonds vs. relationships. Specifically, how you can feel or be told that you have a “close family” yet you feel like familiar strangers.

Something I’ve always experienced and couldn’t really put words to.

Authentic relationships have an important distinction: there is an emotional connection, a wanting of a deep “knowing” of another person. There’s clear communication, boundaries, an openness, + a safety between two people.

Of course to have authentic relationships we have to have the skills of emotional regulation, communication around mutual needs, + commitment to emotional vulnerability. Skills many of us don’t have because we’ve never been modeled them. All things that can be learned.

Without these emotional connections, we struggle to connect to others. It may even feel confusing like we “should” feel closer because we spend so much time with someone. Or have known them for so long.

Our need to connect to other human beings is hardwired in our DNA, so when we aren’t emotionally connected, we don’t stop seeking that connection. We find other ways to seek it. Ways that are attempts to find connections that can be hurtful or confusing.

  • **Consistently Inconsistent?** Not this week! 
Okay soooooo, my usual burnout or lack of accountability happens around day three or week two-ish. Wednesday came around I chose to be stronger than my excuses! I would like to put up some workout schweaty pics buuuuuut your girl is still working through transparency and self judgment issues. I am also getting ‘tudes from this Fitbit Versa.😐 So my active times and heart rate aren’t consistent. Anyhow, I completed six consecutive days of workouts, ate better, feel great and supported our son’s goal along the way! He wants to be a healthier version of himself and be able to complete a 5k race without stopping!

  • My entire life I always had this feeling that confused me within my family. I heard over + over again that we were a close family. And we were—in physical proximity. Always around each other. Always sharing space, always calling to check in.

But I always felt like I was around familiar strangers. I always felt alone. I never fully felt seen. It was a loneliness I’d known since childhood.

We had a bond, but we didn’t have emotional depth. We didn’t communicate about our experiences. Our connection usually came through shared states of crisis, chaos, or shared worry. Or, through teasing each other. A way that many people who have issues connecting emotionally attempt connection.

I remember one day my sister said “you never tell us anything” + I blamed myself. She was right. I didn’t share much of myself. The emotional climate just didn’t have that space. We didn’t invest in each other in that way. We didn’t know how. No one ever asked about each other’s experiences beyond surface questions.

A relationship is different than a bond. A relationship includes that emotional investment. Both parties attempt to see + hear the other. Connection is made through genuine interest in the persons experience.

This can be confusing to navigate because bonds can feel very superficially close. We can even create ego narratives that protect us from the lack of authentic connection. We may tell ourselves we “should” feel things we don’t feel, + shame ourselves for the lack of connection.

Relationships allow for an awareness of a persons experiences +inner emotional world. They allow for vulnerability, openness, + safety. Boundaries, clear communication, + core needs are present.

It can be helpful to understand that nothing is wrong with sharing bonds with people. Bonds can also provide a feeling of safety + security.

It’s is just helpful to be conscious of what relationships can + cannot meet our deep emotional needs.

This emotional awareness allows us to choose where (and how much/often) we invest our time + energy #selfhealers
