☕️ WHAT WAS THE BEST TRANSLATION YOU’VE EVER READ?
#translationsaturday
⁣
You know when you have a good translation in your hands. The first words flow so naturally, that you believe that the story were forever told in that language. That’s when you know it.
⁣
Reading DOM CASMURRO in English could be seen as betrayal to my roots. But if you follow me long enough, you know that, one, I’m a translator, and two, I’ve not only read this book at least four times in my life in Portuguese, but Machado de Assis is also my favorite author. And he wouldn’t mind if I read his book in other languages, for he was a translator himself.
⁣
He translated Shakespeare, Musset, Molière, Dickens, Dante, La Fontaine, Mickiewicz, Beaumarchais. It’s not by a miracle that his writing was so good. He drank from the good wells in the original taste of ‘em.
⁣
My edition of DOM CASMURRO was translated by Helen Caldwell (the first English translation of the book, published in 1953). It’s so well translated that I feel like I’m reading Machado de Assis in English, if you know what I mean. And he’s good!
⁣
Sometimes I feel like the work of translators is neglected, and I’m guilty too. That’s why I decided to try to make every Saturday a hashtag translationsaturday. I might write in English or in any other language and the theme will always be something related to languages and translations. I think it’s one thing missing in this project that I love.
⁣
👉🏻 So, tell me, what was the best translation you’ve ever read? And what has made it so good in your opinion?
