  • Day 43: Jailbreak⁣
⁣
Prison Island. ⁣
⁣
A few kilometres off the coast of Zanzibar, the tiny plot of sand in the middle of the ocean had historically been used by the Sultanate as a prison for those cheeky slaves who strangely did not want to be human property. Penalty: be in captivity elsewhere, on a different island. When the Brits took the island in the late 1800s, they too used it as a prison. Later, in the 1960s when the island had gained its independence, it became a prison for the resident population of Aldabra giant tortoises, which had been gifted to the Sultanate by the British governor of Seychelles. Today, it’s holds in its captivity tens of thousands of Italian tourists, who flock to the 800m long and 200 wide tiny island by the boatload for professional sunbathing and endless photography. Tutto bene 💁🏻‍♂️⁣
⁣
The Aldabra giant tortoises are distant relatives of the Galapagos tortoises, and are pretty bloody big - they get to about 1.5 metres long. Weigh 250kg. AND THEY CAN EAT FROM THE BRANCHES OF TREES. A tortoise that eats out of a fucking tree. You’d understand why people (Italians - to clarify, there are ONLY Italians in Zanzibar, plus a couple of locals) would flock to the island to see the descendants of the giant tortoises that made this prison home over one hundred years ago. ⁣

  • The Bolson tortoise was recently uplisted from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Thankfully, the Turtle Conservancy, along with partners HABIO A.C., Global Wildlife Conservation (GWC), and Rainforest Trust partnered on a deal to purchase an 18,850-acre former cattle ranch in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert, which will be converted into a desert-grassland wildlife refuge.
This purchase was made possible by grants and other support from a partnership formed by the Turtle Conservancy, Rainforest Trust, Global Wildlife Conservation, and several private donors. As many as 200 bird species, 70 mammal species, 44 reptile species, and 8 amphibian species use this newly protected habitat. Grasslands also remain a significant carbon sink for North America’s battle against climate change, showing again how saving turtles can save the planet!! .

  • Thought tortoises were slow, huh? Well, think again! This Bolson Tortoise looks to be getting some last minute training in before the #Sontar6k— it’s officially the LAST WEEK to register for the virtual run hosted by the @whovianrunningclub. They have graciously chosen the #turtleconservancy as their charity partner for the race, and all proceeds go towards helping us to acquire land so that we can continue to protect turtles and tortoises in their own wild homes where they belong! 🌵🌳🌲🌺🌊🌿🐢
For example, we recently partnered with HABIO A.C., @global_wildlife_conservation and @rainforesttrust on a deal to purchase an 18,850-acre former cattle ranch in Mexico’s Chihuahuan Desert. This land will be converted into a desert-grassland wildlife refuge where the critically endangered Bolson Tortoise (Gopherus flavomarginatus) like Speed Racer over here ^^ can live and train for virtual runs in peace. .
We also protect about 80% of the critically endangered Geometric Tortoise’s (Psammobates geometricus) remaining habitat on our South African Preserve, but there are still many threats to this land and the tortoises that inevitably venture outside of our preserve, and we are determined to protect them all! Of course and as we all know, land is expensive, and the turtles don’t pay rent. Thankfully, the help of @whovianrunningclub and the upcoming Sontar 6k, we hope to raise the funds we need to expand this critical preserve so that we can protect even more of these precious tortoises and the wildlife they share their home with!! You in? Sign up for the #sontar6k today, or, if that’s not quite your speed (as most turtles can relate), visit our website to donate to the cause, buy some TC merch become a TC member, and spread the word! .

  • 2 DAY OLD Galapagos tortoise hatchling!! ❤️😭❤️🐢❤️🐢❤️ This baby was bred and hatched at @jason3jsabels Three Jay’s Tortoise Sanctuary. Jason is a conservation breeder that has worked in conjunction with organizations such as the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) on SSPs (Species Survival Plans), as well as independently as a sanctuary. He is one of the best people I know, and I’m so grateful he let me meet all the new babies! When I went to visit him, he had 22 babies hatched, and some still incubating 😍 His work and others are crucial for the survival of some species that can no longer thrive in their native habitats, usually because of human impact. Galapagos tortoises are mainly threatened on the islands due to a disease brought in by rats stowed away on ships from humans traveling there. Keep up the great work @jason3jsabels , and guys go check out his page to see all the incredible work he does!
