  • My girlfriend wrote a beautiful response--personal and touching--to one of my @medium discussion pieces (bit.ly/4-parts-of-love). My writing is about how to define love according to Buddhist practice and my own testing of Buddha's teaching, per his advice. Her response is about growing up in a Christian-Buddhist household, and how at a deep level there is much more commonality than difference (bit.ly/prims-response)

She is ESL, read between lines

I responded to her on Medium:
--- This is a beautiful example of how a new “religion” or “secular spirituality,” or whatever you want to call it, can emerge from bringing in wisdom from all traditional religions and making them one in harmony. It wouldn’t be so hard, would it — if we take the deep wisdom from traditional religions, there is more in common than in difference. We just have to open our minds some more. The wars fought between the old religions come from closed-mindedness, misunderstanding, dogma, and proselytization. The new religion can be whatever you want to call it — the word “religion” is merely a label that happens to be associated with strong and varying connotations (i.e., memories). Memory associations can be hard to change. So maybe we shouldn’t call the new religion, “religion.” We should definitely do away with dogma and proselytization. These are old ways. We are smarter than that now. We know that things change. We know that we are never quite right — even science is always changing, and always “wrong” to some extent. We can move toward a singular “religion” rooted in science, reason, and humanism. “Religion” can become a singulare tantum. Because there are hardcore materialists — those who will only accept what can be observed with the instruments invented by humankind — we might not call it “spirituality” either. We may simply call it “wisdom.” The new religion is nothing more or less than a map to guide ourselves, our children, their children, and so forth, more efficiently to wisdom.
