  • On a chilly winter morning, low clouds brush against the deep blue and grey hues of a mountainous backdrop just outside of Seattle. @itsbigben captures the emotive scene as @joeyspeers flips into the frigid waters below, the splash sprinkling the water's surface as if mimicking the rain that frequently falls over the Pacific Northwest. American author Garth Stein once said, "In Seattle, we live among the trees and the waterways, and we feel we are rocked gently in the cradle of life." Is there a place that you find absolutely spectacular, even on the coldest and rainiest of days? ( 🎥: @itsbigben 📍: Seattle, Washington)

  • Today was a prime example of “you win some you lose some.” Earlier today, I posted on my Stories about how we decide where to go and what to do next on our road trips. This was *right* before we got skunked *twice* in The Dolomites. I was realllly wanting a hike in The Dolomites in Northern Italy, so did my research and saw that the elevation was high, but regardless we drove, hopeful the snow line was higher than our hikes. ➡️ Hike 1: Sorapis Lake... closed and it was raining and we were losing daylight (due to missing the trailhead and circling back) to complete the 13k round trip, even if we decided to ignore that it was closed :/. Onward! Hike 2: the 30 minute version of Tre Cime di Lavaredo since it was lower elevation. Road to entry... closed. Ah I was crushed! ➡️ But, earlier in the day, we hung out at the Soča River in Slovenia and it was magical. Then later tonight we had the ballerest Italian dinner for €5 each overlooking a valley in a small town near tonight’s campsite. (I had googled “best local Italian cheap eats Castellazzo, Italy” and it popped up as number 1. Read reviews, saw some pics and it checked out.) Win some. Lose some. 🤷‍♀️ Swipe for my reaction + pic of “The Dolomites” 😑🤣

  • Im usually not too good and inspirational quotes and wise words, but here is a borrowed one anyway. “The greater danger for most of us isn’t that our aim is too high and miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”

🇺🇸We got to this rooftop by sunrise, were greeted by cats, birds and a large dog 🐕 A man who lives there showed up. I thought he might ask us to leave, instead he offered us tea 🍵 and brought us bread so we could feed the animals! That sums up the amazing experience we had in beautiful and friendly Istanbul! •

  • In celebration of National Park Week, let's talk favorite parks. Since its centennial anniversary, the National Park Service has been encouraging us to get out and #FindYourPark. Have you found yours? Mine’s the perfect place to ignite some serious exploration inspiration. It's relatively tiny as far as national parks go, but Petrified Forest National Park stretches across more than 220,000 acres of the lush desert grasslands that carpet Navajo and Apache counties in Northeastern Arizona. It's also the only national park that good old Route 66 runs through, so you can "Get your kicks" and get out and explore the great outdoors all in one epic road trip.

Petrified Forest is unlike any other park or forest. Its name could be a bit deceiving if you don’t know what 200-million-year-old, petrified trees look like. This is the only forest I’ve ever heard of that doesn’t contain a single standing tree for as far as your eyes can see. Doesn’t sound like much of a forest, does it? But a couple of the park’s most spectacular sections – Crystal Forest, Rainbow Forest, and Jasper Forest, might give you a bit more insight as to what exactly this unparalleled place has to offer. It could be described as the most beautiful, and least depressing, sparkling cemetery for ancient trees, or a technicolor, desert paradise packed with geological wonders. Without getting overly scientific, over the course of millions of years, these trees have become fossils, protected from decay by oxygen, organisms, and just the right environmental conditions. What were once rough, jagged, flaking shards of bark, are now quartz, silica, calcite, and opal; smooth as glass, incapable of burning, and as colorful as a treasure chest jam-packed with gemstones. Specks of red, yellow, white, purple, pink, and blue make up the sleek surfaces of these previously-intact tree trunks. While they were alive, these former ferns, gingkoes, and coniferous trees once towered up to 200 feet tall. (That's longer than a football field!) {Continued in the comments.}
