  • You know when you’re casually going about your day—minding your own business—and then your credit card ✨for fun✨ shows you what you spent last year...oh...just me?

Now: before this year, K and I SOLELY used our credit card and just paid the entire balance every month. We didn’t carry debt...but still...this makes my stomach hurt.

What was the biggest offender? Swipe through to find out! I’ve shown you the breakdown!

2020 has brought a LOT of bad things with it—but it will NOT bring this kind of spending EVER AGAIN—I’m glad I saw this...even if it DID make me queasy 🤢🤢🤢 #debtisdumb #debtfreecommunity #debtfreejourney

  • Cost: .66 I like BIG DICE and I can not lie😂🤣😂‼️This was a project that I had been wanting to do for a while and with all of this down town I was able to create 3 pairs of over sized dice!! One set was only 66 cents to make. However this can be a free project if you get empty boxes form your local store. I purchased the boxes from Walmart and I already had the paper. I wanted my dice to be a certain size for storage purposes so I got the 12”x10”x8 inch boxes. Not sure if I will be able to use them this school year, however I am glad I had time to finally make them. #elementaryteacher #dollar #walmart #dice #dicegame #diceset #oversizeddice #teacherstyle #teacher #teacherbudget #teacherbudgetnista #craft #crafterlife #teachercrafts #igteacher #doitonadime #budget #teachersofinstagram #teacherswhocraft #teachersupport #dollarcrafts

  • It is okay to mourn the things we are missing due to Coronavirus. I am mourning:
🏐 coaching my kids in each volleyball game
👩‍🏫my students making me laugh everyday
🧳 a trip to the Smokies I had planned for Spring Break
📚 the antiracist book festival at AU
🎁 celebrating my nephew’s 2nd birthday & my brothers 17th & who knows how many more
😷just to name a few. You can be grateful for health and stability and still be sad for the things that would have been.
❓what’s something you’re mourning?

  • My car & travel funds made little or negative progress this month, a result of a ticket and a cabin weekend. But I’m not disappointed in my lack of progress— I just feel blessed to have had the money saved to pay for these expenses in cash. That’s the magic of sinking funds.

  • So how is everyone doing? I’ve been sticking to my routine of working on resources and projects, but like most of us, have also been doing more things around the house (shocker!) <insert cooking, baking, reading, home workouts> 🍳🥮📚💪🏼
In fact, I’m about to head outside to plant some new flowers in the front lawn beds. Wish me luck because I honestly don’t know how this will turn out. I design teacher materials, not landscapes. 🥴🌱🌻

  • Raise your hand if you or someone you love has been financially burdened by this quarantine... 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ We are certainly not saying that it’s the wrong choice—but it’s a painful reality for so many businesses/families/debtors everywhere.

So what’s the solution? Reach out (virtually, of course) and TELL PEOPLE you are struggling. Whether that’s:

1. Calling up your credit card company, utilities manager, mortgage company, doctors office—let them know what’s going on and ASK if you can get some kind of financial break. You NEVER know until you ask! It’s possible that there’s financial assistance or a payment plan that you can get on. Just ASK!
2. Making a social media post seeing if someone in your circle knows of extra work you can pick up or a job opening that’s looking for seasonal employees! Our local @heb is paying competitive wages and seeking those who have lost their jobs because of COVOID-19! Just ASK!
3. Take this opportunity to revamp your resume. Take an hour and write down all the AMAZING skills and talents that you have and spend some time on @indeedworks or @linkedin to see what’s OUT there. Just ASK.

These are unprecedented times and every single human on Earth is in it WITH YOU. Let’s be a community and help each other grow.

  • Cost: $0 One of my class favorites Life Size Bass Ten Buddies!! All you need is Astro bright paper, a black sharpie and a laminator! I cut 5 sheets of Astro Bright paper in half to make one base block buddy. I glued the pieces together with Elmer’s glue o let them dry then used a black sharpie to section them off. I then cut out 2 circles for the eyes and used a sharpie to fill them in. I used my school laminator to laminate the pieces and then got glue the eyes on. I have had these for about 2 years. #elementaryteacher #elementaryschool #firstgraders #firstgradelove #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #teacherstyle #teachercrafts #craftyteacher #astrobrights #makinglearningfun #makinglearningvisible #teacherbudgetnista #teacherbudget #igteacher #teachersfollowingteachers #teachersfollowteachers

  • Had a few people ask me, so I made a little flowchart for you— here is how I would recommend using your stimulus check if you receive one.
💰
Emergency savings come first during this time, so I only recommend moving forward with any other goals in the case that you have a full 3-6 months of expenses *and* are not likely to lose your job as a result of COVID-19. Then, if you’re in debt, I would make sure you use the money to pay it down— if we’re heading into a recession, you want to make sure you have as few liabilities as possible. Finally, if you’re debt free and have a fully-funded EF, it’s wise to save your refund towards other goals or invest it in a retirement account.
💰
But consider this: If you’re killing it with all your money goals, the best thing you can do with your money is give it to a family in need or support a local business— we’re all in need right now, but some of us are hurting more than others. If you’ve got resources to share, now is the time to do it.
🖤

  • Today marks one week of my school being closed. A lot of reflection has led to me realize a few things:
🖤
Everyday this week I have exercised, ate well, rested, gone outside, read, written, learned, socialized (distantly) and worked. I feel healthier, more productive, and more balanced than any moment during the past few months— and we’re in a global pandemic.
🖤
I’m realizing that our society is not set up for us to be well, and I resent that. I love the students I teach and the athletes I coach. I love all of the things I have chosen to put on my plate— including the school newspaper and grad school and Teachers Talk Money. But the time and space we have at this moment has shown me that I can be so much more balanced. And I wonder if it’s even possible to achieve that balance and still reach all the goals I have for my life and work.
🖤
I’ve also seen so many people talking about how they wish they could always spend this much time with their children, or working on creative projects, or self-educating, or volunteering. And I’m just wondering... why isn’t there a real space for this in our normal lives? Not just talking about us listening to a podcast on the way to work, or squeezing in time for creativity only to feel more stressed about not spending more time on our endless work. But REAL time and space— that doesn’t come at the cost of something else?
🖤
I’m just thinking out loud, but I feel very strongly that our society is doing us a disservice. Drop a comment below with your thoughts— help me work through my reflection on this!

  • I feel super relieved having my emergency fund completed just as COVID-19 is hitting my area hard. I have never felt the need for an EF on an emotional level quite as much as I do now. In a time of uncertainty, I have some peace of mind. If you don’t have an EF yet, now is the PERFECT time to begin— make sure you are stacking any available funds in cash during this time.

  • Getting a huge check from the IRS feels amazing... until you realize that you earned that money months and months ago. Keep in mind that you could have had that money as cash flow month-to-month, or invested it for interest instead of have it just sit with the IRS. And don’t forget that this money is NOT “extra” and should never be treated like it is!
💰
So consider adjusting your returns and aiming to have a smaller tax refund next year. Still, if you DID get one this year, check out my latest blog post or YouTube video to learn how I suggest you use it.

This weekend I want to spring clean, work in the yard, and go to Target—you know, to get some cute spring decor. 🌷
Want me to show you what I find?

I made her a sticker chart and then hit up the dollar tree to fill up her hand made (used @amazon box) prize box! Here’s to less tears and more ZzZzZ’s!

  • H E L L O ——> So, I figured I needed to introduce myself because several of you don’t have a clue who I am.
My name is Courtney and I’m a 2nd grade teacher to 46 tiny humans. (We’re departmentalized, so that’s why the number is larger than average.) In October of 2018, I bought a little 14x40 gem. It was COMPLETELY empty, a total shell. So, my dad and I are the ones doing all the work to make it a home. 🥰
We added 10 ft. to the back which will be my laundry room/closet. We thought this would be the best option so it wouldn’t be so cramped since the living space is already •t i n y•
I decided to create my girl (aka tiny house) an Instagram to keep everything separated from my personal account. So, you may or may not find me needing some tips on what’s what when it comes to decor. —I HAVE SO MANY IDEAS and I CANNOT wait to see everything in reality than just in my head. 🙃

This has been a loonnnngggg waiting process. And if you know me, you know how impatient I am, but ya girl is on a teacher budget. 🙈🤪 Can anybody hear me?!?! #teacherbudget #teacherbroke

However, it has been a very fun, and exciting, adventure. I’m thoroughly enjoying making special, special memories with my dad as we #werk. I hope y’all enjoy seeing this little beaut come to life right here in AL.

  • People fall into two categories. Those who love playing with numbers, and those who don’t. If you fall into the second category, #budgeting on a teacher’s salary can be overwhelming! The problem is that everyone needs a plan for cash flow, and it’s different for everyone!⠀ ⠀

  • Happy March everyone! 🍀 time for your 3rd money resolution for the year. In case you missed January and February, you can catch up by 1. Making a budget and 2. Setting 1 exciting and 1 not-so-exciting savings goal.
💰
Now, I know that tons of you are natural savers who have one big savings account you add money to monthly. If this is you, you’re definitely doing something right already— the fact that you’re saving at all is awesome.
👏
BUT it’s time to take it a step further. The problem with having your money for travel, emergencies, gifts, new tech, etc. all in one account is that you don’t have a defined goal for that money. You don’t know how much you NEED in each category— or even how much you HAVE to spend on those important things individually.
🙅‍♀️
Separate 👏 your 👏 accounts. 👏 trust me. That way, instead of putting a random amount of money towards all your goals, you can determine how much you need to put into each goal monthly. For example, I know Christmas comes every year and I have a huge f***ing family, so I need to be putting $60 aside every month to be able to spend the amount I want to in December. You should also consider making these monthly transfers automatic to give you one less thing to think about.
💰
When you’ve got these savings accounts (also known as “sinking funds”) separate, you have permission to spend the amount you want in each category. You won’t be worried if your summer vacation is “too expensive” because it’s draining a good chunk of your only savings account.
💰
Comment below any questions you have! If you still need to get started on your budget, go to teacherstalkmoney.com/budget to get started by choosing one of my templates! :)

  • CONFESSION TIME.
🤭
My sleep has been absolutely horrible for pretty much this entire month. It started when I broke my arm— I was in pain and was limited to 2 possible positions to sleep in, neither of which were fully comfortable for me. It completely derailed my motivation to work on this goal. I started going to sleep later, napping for hours, and hitting the snooze button for the first time in probably a year. And more than usual lately, I 👏 am 👏 feeling 👏 it 👏
I am physically and mentally exhausted almost daily. My diet is suffering. And small bumps in the road at work feel insurmountable with little energy.
😴
It’s time for me to stop making excuses and get back on track. It’s no longer out of my control. I’ve had a month of healing my bones. Now it’s time to heal my sleep once again.
🥱😴 🛏 💤

  • In the home stretch!!! Put enough money aside from my tax refund this year (post to come) to be able to finish my Emergency Fund in March! I’m so excited to start putting that $200 towards more exciting goals starting in April.

  • While helping fifth graders during math intervention time today, many of our problems dealt with Girl Scout cookies. 😋🙌🏼🍪
So what’s your favorite Girl Scout cookie? Mine are Do-si-dos. And Caramel deLites. And whichever one has lemon. 🤣🥜🥥🍋

  • The February Funk is real and I haven’t fixed my hair once this week 🤣 BUT because #teacherbudget I had to share @nordstromrack has all their sweaters on clearance (some as low as $8!) and I snagged this @freepeople sweater for $18.99 (originally $149 😅)!

  • SO true! I got rid of so much of my teaching stuff when I had my baby last year and now it feels like I’m starting completely over! What are your best tips for getting your classroom ready on a #teacherbudget? Also, yes I know it’s the end of the year, but is anyone else already thinking ahead haha? #nojustme #teacherhumor

  • I’m the happiest broke teacher 👩🏻‍🏫 in the world. I’m making below the federal minimum wage and still planning to buy a house in the next *six* months. I’m still waking up everyday ENJOYING what I do and not wondering how I’m going to make ends meet. I’m not resenting my job, hating lesson planning, and dreading another school year of part time jobs.
.
Why? How?
.
Because my second source of income does NOT require me to check my availability. I don’t have to give up healthy eating and working out in order to find time for a retail job or fast food restaurant. .
My part time job REQUIRES me to workout, challenges me to eat clean, and allows me to reach other people that are ALSO wanting a lil more out of their body. .
Being a teacher doesn’t have to suck. You can be happy, reach your goals, and still teach 🍎 want to do it with me?!! Show me your favorite teacher emoji to see how you can feel this way toooo ⬇️⬇️⬇️

  • RUN to your nearest Dollar Tree and stock up on new bins for next year!! They have some great colors right now. I used Dollar Tree bins for book baskets for my kids for three years in a row...I probably could have squeezed another year out of them too! Tip: Buy about 6-7 extra in “your colors” so you can replace a few each year (that’s inevitable!). Then you’ll still have a matching set each year! 👌🏽
