  • Our EC Journalist @contemporary_conservationist who kills it again...
What species do you think I'll find this year? The Belize rainy season is just around the corner! I know it!
.
The past few days we've started to see more and more rain here @treesocietybelize and, although it brings cool air and relaxing sounds on tin roofs, I couldn't be more excited for the animals, like this Mexican Tree Frog that come with it!
.
PVC pipes, coverboards, pitfalls, camera traps, and drift fences are all getting setup for the coming rainy season in a little over a month. My goal this year is to amass an astounding amount of data on not only the herpetofauna found in central Belize but also what methods work well in tropical environments!
.
Although, we know tropical rainforests contain some of the highest biodiversity of reptiles and amphibians in the world, we know relatively little about how to properly sample it. Most studies examining the efficacy of different techniques, do so in countries such as the U.S. with a drastically different ecosystem or on charismatic/economically important species.
.
While this data is incredibly important and has tremendous impacts for conservation, we cant ignore the other amazing ecosystems on our planet!
.
Everytime I design a new sampling protocol I need to ask myself,
.
"Will this method from Pennsylvania work with tropical species?"
.
"Do I check the traps at the same time as the paper from B.C.? (Sunrise is at 5:20 AM here and it's dark by 6pm)"
.
"How different are the life history strategies of the species here compared to ones from Texas?"
.
I should note that these questions are not limited to tropical environments only. Every single research scientist should be thinking about these questions, and plenty more, whenever they setup a project. Every experiment is different and every study needs to draw attention to the biases of their methods. .
Without doing so, how can we have proper science?

  • First day back after Semana Santa. I’m breaking out, my hair’s a mess, and all of the little sticky notes you see are redone lesson plans for the next few weeks. I’m sTrEsSEd. But my girlies are cute and leave me cute notes on my desk that make my Tuesday’s a little better.

  • Working hours usually range from 15 hours to 40 hours weekly. Some schools will require you to do office hours and other hours teaching. In your office hours you should plan your lessons and also do other administrative work. Others don't require you to do office hours, you will have the freedom to plan your lessons in your apartment 😊... To see if a job offer is good enough, you should compare the salary with the working hours. You can't work for more than 30 hours for less than 12 000¥🤷🏽‍♀ #tefl #teflinchina #tefljobs #tefllife #teflabroad #teachaway #teachabroad #workinghours #flexibleworkinghours

  • My Bitmoji basketball net might just be my favourite part of my classroom 🏀💖 We play basketball to celebrate our growth mindsets! Yes, we have a class cheer and dance too! 🎉🧠👊 Our hoop hangs over our school’s management system and children get to take a shot for making and learning from mistakes, encouraging others, trying new or difficult things, etc. etc. etc. 🙌 (I know it’s completely OTT btw 😂)

  • have you ever wondered why my IG is “awanderingheather”? while it is right there in the name i get that it might still draw curiosity from some (no judgment). spoiler alert: it’s because I like to wander. .
.
.
everyone has an element in which they thrive in, in which they can be seen as their best self, in which they wind up and everyone thinks “huh, yeah that fits”. sounds simple, but my element is wandering. even though I absolutely get down to business planning my adventures and bookings, my favorite moments are the ones in which I simple get to explore with no agenda. maybe I pick a direction and meander my way towards something, maybe I just follow what looks like a cool path, no matter what I love it. one of my favorite things to take pictures of is alleys - weird little alleyways all over the world have lead me to the most intriguing places. places like this market street that we liked the look of, or a sandwich shop in Barcelona, an absurd American diner in Paris, adorable stationary stores in Taiwan. my favorite adventures are the ones I get to stumble upon and savor for the mere fact they happened naturally by being in that place and in that moment. .

  • Some words of wisdom to begin your day! Teaching English abroad is a big decision, be proud that you are where you are. Some people will remain too scared to take this leap and spend their entire life regretting it. Don’t be that person!!!

  • Our first set of photos for this week's Sakura Matsuri comes from one of our teachers in the Shizuoka area.

Here's what she had to say about the photos: "The first three are from the base of Mt. Omuro, a dormant volcano in Izu. The rest are from the area surrounding Sunpo Castle Park in Shizuoka. While the castle is no longer there, the walls provide excellent views of the cherry blossoms every year. The city holds a festival every year to honor the history of Shizuoka, which includes a parade and a lot of food stalls." Thanks for the great photos, Jessie!

  • Survived my first 30 days in #China.
Boy I don’t feel like I’ve been here for only a month😆. Time literally flew by !! I’m having fun and the true sense of what it means to adapt to your new surroundings.
My job has been super dope. My boss values my opinion as an educator and often looks to me to be a resource. Never in hell that happened to me in the States.
I am learning more and more about myself especially with me approaching my 30s, this is the time i needed.
I hope y’all enjoying my posts. Wait until the summer when I got some time 🥰🥰🥰.

  • Happy UN English Language Day! 📕💡
•
•
•
Why is learning English so important? English is one of the three core subjects in the Chinese school curriculum, and the one that poses most challenges to rural and migrant children. Improvement of basic education is the key to helping children from rural areas because it gives them the tools and confidence needed to build a better future for themselves!
