Nepal Himalaya! To conclude this short selection of pictures from our 1988 trip across eastern Nepal, two posts this morning. As the sun rose on that last day at Pathibara I scurried about in the woods trying to find spots to get clear shots of the mountains. The light on these surreal occasions is so fleeting... Here are two images of the Kangchendzonga massif taken on that occasion, with Jannu on the left and Kabru, Rathong etc on the right. The valley of the Yalung glacier, up which we had trekked a fortnight earlier, is clearly visible.

  • HOW FAR IN THE EASTERN SIDE HAVE YOU BEEN TO?
🤔
For the best sukuti, thukpa, churpi, tongba, pork chilli and chowmein, you’ll definitely have to visit this part of Nepal.
🔥
The eateries are super clean and the owners of these eateries are so friendly, humble and down to earth. They enriched our experiences with their warm welcome and widest of smiles. Thankful to them for showing me around and letting us enter inside their kitchen with full consent.

  • Just when you think that the 21st century has few mountaineers to look up for inspiration unlike the yesteryear, you see the man @nimsdai pushing the limits of this extreme sport, all the while being on the better side of the delicate line of humanity that the majority breach in pursuit of the summit.

This picture of the great south-west face of Kanchenjunga framed by prayer flags at it's base is dedicated to the indomitable spirit which Dai displayed on it's deathly slopes last week, and made a herculean effort to save lives while disregarding his own. At an altitude where the brain is dying away due to lack of oxygen and taking decisons, rational ones at that, becomes hazy, what Dai did truly surpasses the might of the mountains which he climbs.

In a super-human show of strength, Nims has currently ascended six of the highest mountains on earth, five of them in less than 10 days as part of Project Possible 14/7, and performed two extremely risky rescues in the death zone, in what I believe, the most super-humane manner.

Inspired, Dai.

  • Can we get thukpas like this in Kathmandu please?
😍😋
After strolling around all the alleys of Taplejung, finding this place was definitely a treasure. And ordering this bowl of thukpa and San Miguel was definitely the best decision of that day.
🙌🏻
This is what a thukpa is supposed to be like. Like this is the ultimate standard. I have tried really amazing food in these past few days at such reasonable prices that I don’t want to go back home. Honestly, exploring had been very tiring at times but tasting yummy food paired up with beer made everything worthwhile.
😊👌🏻

  • In Nepali there is a saying, “Bhok mitho ki Bhojan”.
🤷🏻‍♀️
This moment was exactly the same for us since the level of hunger had surpassed my patience. At that very moment, this plate of chowmein tasted so heavenly and San Miguel brought back the energy we’d lost and made us ready to explore Taplejung.

  • Nepal Himalaya! Sunrise on Makalu, Chomolonzo, Lhotse, Chamlang etc, from Pathi Bara. At the end of our 38 day trek across Western Nepal in November 1988, Rex Munro and I had to wait a couple of days for a flight out of Taplejung (Suketar) airstrip. Rex opted to stay at the Namgye Lodge and chill out eating noodles and drinking thomba. I decided to go for one last look at the Himalaya before heading home at the end of what had been an epic season.
Pathibara Devi temple is known as Mukkumlung to the Limbu people of this area and is an important pilgrimage site for many Hindus. Rinjin and I took sleeping bags and light packs and hiked up to the temple, which sits atop a hill north of Taplejung at 3794m. It commands an uninterrupted panorama of the mountains of East Nepal and is a sensational place. We found several Limbu families there, who fed us and insisted we join them for their dawn ritual of slaughtering a goat. We slept in the communal shelter there with them, and the night was bitterly cold. This was the sunrise on that last morning. Spiritual!

Canon A1, 135mm, Kodachrome. A stitch of two frames.

  • The final march to Kanchenjunga base camp.

The day before we wanted to witness sunrise on the third highest mountain on the planet, we familiarised ourselves with the trail to it's base, as next day we would be walking in darkness, and the already few people in the last teahouse before the base camp had decided to give a miss to waking up early in the morning.

The final trail to the base camp snakes up through the foot of the giants of Kanchenjunga massif, with Kabru and Rathong seen here. Accompanying all along is the magnificent Yalung glacier, whose lateral moraine cuts through this picture from right to left, before vanishing behind the hill. The icy winds from the glacier cause the place to be bone chillingly cold, even while the sun is beating down hard. Kanchenjunga base camp and the origin of the glacier lie much ahead.

In picture is Hector from Spain, an amazing person and more incredible a trekker, who kept me company for the three weeks we spent hiking here.

  • Early Morning Gufapokhari!
This is taken from the sunrise viewpoint right above the Gufapokhari bajaar. We woke up early only to be disappointed with a foggy weather but lucky for us, at dawn, the fog cleared and we had this spectacular view of the pokhari itself and two Himalayan Giants, Mt. Makalu and Mt. Kanchanjunga in the background.

November 2018.

Cheram is a village down the south (Yalung) valley of Kanchenjunga, sharing the Indian border with Sikkim. This village forms a famous halt for climbers attempting Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain on earth.

  • Rabjam Rinpoche is continuing his visits to remote Buddhist areas of Nepal. He recently traveled to Taplejung in western Nepal to attend the third annual Vajrayogini ceremony, consecrate a new temple, and open a new school for local children built by Karuna-Shechen. Thousands of people joined the ceremonies.
Rinpoche was originally introduced to the area by Shechen monk, Nima Tsering, who offered land to build the temple.
Rinpoche has spent the last 4 months conducting ceremonies and traveling in Nepal. Now he returns to Shechen Monastery to begin the transmissions of lung and wangs until April 29.

  • Exploring EastNepal - Ilam, Phidim, Taplejung and TMJ -Teaser

A short teaser of our east Nepal trip, where we explore beautiful Ilam, holy Maipokhari, drive through Phidim and enjoy a wonderful day in Taplejung. TMJ circuit’s Gufapokhari and Milke were our next destination when we started our trek. Although the weather wasn’t in our favor, the trip was a bash. This trip was filled with mixed emotions as we were welcomed by brief good weather at times, electronic devices behaving weirdly in Gufapokhari (spiritual energy??), guras ko juice and wine and free merchandises from friendly locals.

Unfortunately, the TMJ trail up to Gufapokhari, that we hiked a couple of years ago (and had the best time of our lives) can be considered gone as the roads are widened and upgraded. Nevertheless, the rhododendrons and the enchanting forests are still there. All this and more on our full episode releasing soon, stay tuned.
