  • STRANGER THINGS AND CLOSE ENCOUNTERS

Aliens landing? Much better - at Georgian-Swiss Festival for Contemporary Music, the #swissmusicprize winning Mondrian Ensemble will perform «Strange Songs» with the Duo Kappeler Zumthor and make you drift away into never heard music spheres of electronic and contemporary classical music this sunday.
We present you some of the highlights of this very special concert:

Sphere 1 - STRANGE SONGS – compositions by Peter Conradin Zumthor and Vera Kappeler (#swissmusciprize 2017) commissioned and performed by the Mondrian Ensemble (#swissmusicprize 2018) and the duo Kappeler / Zumthor
.
. «ZAGOMIR  is a nebulous-morbid ballad. Simple and straightforward. Perhaps you can imagine it as a childhood dream. Security paired with uncertainty and finiteness find an expression here. BRUTESKE is like a game manual, an attitude. Little notation gives the musicians great room for interpretation. Form and sequence are determined jointly by the ensemble. Energy is more important here than text, risk more important than precision, loss more exciting than consideration.» – Peter Conradin Zumthor .
.
«I have long dedicated my work to the treatment and processing of folk music songs. The four-part piece DURAB consists of variations on the song «Durs Wiesetal gang i hinab», which is probably of Swabian origin. The variations are inspired by very different things: by the charmingly inaccurate inaccuracy of a lay performance, by the free-jazz improvisations of saxophonist Albert Ayler, by Jacques Tati films, music boxes, pinball boxes ...» – Vera Kappeler

Strange is, when a distance arises between the observer and the observed. When the familiar casts a new shadow. Suddenly piles up. Represents itself in a new way. Or presented differently. Strange needs getting used to the unknown.
