  • Here are just a few pics from the opening day of the student exhibition currently on view at Summit Art Space. I didn’t take many as I was enjoying the work in real life. But I have to give a big shoutout and Congratulations to my beautiful Maya! Congratulations on making it through your first individual art show. The work is beautiful and full of detail. All the work in the junior class exhibition is stunning as well. 😍 I can’t wait to go back and view the show again while it’s up. Congratulations to the teachers, thank you for believing in the students and guiding them through the artistic process and presenting their work for the community. .

  • "Verticalibration," a photo by Thomas Skala @skalamander of #Akron, took second place in the 419 Square Miles of Summit County - Photos of People and Places, Juried Photography Exhibition which runs in the main gallery of @summitartspace on East Market until March 30. You will see the Maiden Lane Historic District rendered in inconceivable detail, mimicking a drawing. Thomas writes in his Artist Statement: "Being accustomed to larger urban areas, I've always been interested in attempting to portray Downtown Akron as a busy and bustling big city. I always thought this photo captured that feeling perfectly. It has businesses, building renovations, towering brick structures, a satellite dish, a construction barricade, and -- in a nod to Akron's connection to the CVNP -- a thin sliver of trees beyond the All-American Bridge." The show contains 46 photos of people and places in #SummitCountyOH juried by veteran photographer Gary Harwood. Free. Open today 12-7 p.m. More info at: summitartspace.org/event #placesforthecreative #photography #photo #photographicstorytelling #photographyexhibition #akronphotographers #SummitArtspace #summitartspaceoneastmarket

  • The title couldn't be any better: "Fred's Diner Does Bacon," photo by Debra-Lynn Hook @debralynnhookphotos of #KentOH. The shot took first place in the “419 Square Miles of Summit County - Photos of People and Places, Juried Photography Exhibition, March 1-30 at #SummitArtspace on East Market. The legendary diner is located on Home Avenue in Akron. Here's what Debra-Lynn wrote in her Artist Statement: "Fred's Diner, in a non-descript, white concrete building on Home Ave, has been serving up Akron folks with down-home food for 30 years. None more copiously than bacon. Fourteen tons a year, says owner Fred Spencer. Here is his son, heir apparent by day and a rapper by night." • 📸A new photography show, which opens March 1 at @summitartspace on East Market, captures Summit County through the eyes of those who live here, from hobbyists to professionals.
The show, “419 Square Miles of Summit County–Photos of People and Places,” kicks off with a free artist reception on Friday, March 1, from 5 to 8 p.m., in the main gallery at Summit Artspace on East Market, 140 E. Market St., Akron. The exhibit runs until March 30 and is free and open to the public.
The winners of the juried show will be announced at 7 p.m. More than 100 photographs were submitted. The juror for the show is Gary Harwood, a veteran photographer and photography teacher from Kent.
Harwood will lead a panel discussion with the photographers on Thursday, March 28, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the main gallery surrounded by the photos. The event is free. Reserve a seat at https://bit.ly/2TEpOSX — Summit County covers 419 square miles in Northeast Ohio, representing many facets of geography, business, rural and urban venues and diverse people.
The expanse of Summit County will be reflected in photographs that convey emotions, speaking to the people, history and significance of life in the county. At a time when urban and rural areas are sometimes divided, the common, visual narrative found in photography provides an avenue for conversation and mutual appreciation.
Summit Artspace’s main gallery is open Thursdays and Fridays, noon to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 5 p.m. For info, call (330) 376-8480 or visit www.summitartspace.org. #akron #akronart #summitartspace #photography

  • ABSOLUTELY LAST DAY for FRESH 2019, 15th Annual Juried Art Exhibition at #SummitArtspace on East Market, 12-5 pm. You'll see these tandem pieces by @pierson_bob Robert Pierson. Here's what the artist says about them: “I find myself becoming more attracted to the space around things more than the objects themselves. The latest works that involve bicycles display strong use of negative space in the cast shadows. I am beginning to understand the sensibilities of the color field painters such as Mark Rothko. The dissipation of washes on black canvas leads to unexpected dissipation of values that I find intriguing and enjoyable. I also seem attracted to following the edges of contours with wash." Several gallery shows and artist studios open. Great day to discover the wonder of #localartists. All exhibit information: https://www.summitartspace.org/event/ #Akronartists #NEOartists @summitartspace
