  • I get asked all the time if β€œtaller” athletes should dead lift and/or back squat……well here’s my answer. @bigosamuel is 7’1” and routinely pulls and squats over 300lbs…work with your taller athletes to understand levers, leverage and technique of course and the rest falls into place.   • The Importance of Enjoyment

The saying goes, β€œtime flies when you are having fun.” But perhaps you have also experienced minutes drag on like hours. When someone decides to start running or exercising, a lot of the time they jump into running... and hate running. It is understandable that so many people drop New Year's resolutions when their goal is to do something they hate.

I actually enjoy running, but for many people it is tedious and undesired. When trying to get active, it is essential to find an activity you actually enjoy. Biking, swimming, dancing, hiking, climbing, and sports galore. There are many options that will not only result in your time flying, but you will be healthier as a result of it.

It also may not be the activity. There is quite a lot that changes when you get active solo or with others. When you run/swim/bike/hike/etc. alone you can dig deep into your own mind and press yourself against your own limits and goals.   • I’m not a speed expert, although speed is obviously a big focus of a complete strength and conditioning programs for athletes. I get questions about how to program that into the week. .

Here are the basic rules for athletes, regardless of age and training/game experience... this is important for anyone purposefully starting to train speed! .

Slow to Fast. Let the tissues adapt and learn to control your velocity and clock your perceived exertion/effort. .
.
Soft to Hard. We use walk-ins, split starts, or falling at first, which allow the body to still be in motion. Then progress to static or β€œhard” starts like track starts, where the body is not in motion.

Short to Long. Milk the short sprints for speed gains. An athlete who runs a wicked 20m sprint should be able to hold 80% of that speed for longer than an athlete with a moderate 20m sprint. We love a speed reserve moment. .

Again, this is how I think of the rules and a brief glance at how we implement them generally. Speed training is very specific, so if that’s the only bag you’re trying to dip your hand in, go speak with some purebred experts. .
