All eyes on Jupiter! 👀 Our @NASAJuno spacecraft captured this image of Jupiter’s southern hemisphere on the outbound leg of a close flyby of the gas giant planet. It’s called a gas giant planet because its atmosphere is made up of mostly hydrogen gas and helium gas, like the Sun.
This color-enhanced image was taken on May 24 as the spacecraft performed its 13th close flyby of Jupiter. At the time, Juno was about 44,300 miles (71,400 kilometers) from the planet's cloud tops, above a southern latitude of 71 degrees.

Since July 4, 2016 when the Juno spacecraft successfully entered the orbit of Jupiter, we have been peering below the dense cover of clouds to answer questions about the gas giant and the origins of our solar system.

  • Our #ItemOfTheWeek wouldn't look out of place in a Quidditch match, but this polyhedral sundial was used to tell the time!
.
.
This particular object has 26 sides and 20 individual sundials. This marvel was made during the Renaissance, a period of time when the production of complex sundials put the skills of mathematicians and instrument makers to the test! You can get an up-close look at this sundial in our "Astronomy in Culture" exhibition. .

  • Hello again, this is Kamala Venkatesh(@kamalavenkatesh. I am basically s landscape photographer with a penchant for Astrophotography.
So happy to be sharing another of my Astro Milky Way shots from last summer on @universetoday-thank you for the opportunity!

Taken over the ‘Serpent’ in the Anza Borrego State Park in Borrego Springs, California. For those who are not familiar with this desert region of Southern California, the desert floor is scattered with dozens and dozens of metal sculptures called the Galleta Medows. They are beautiful works of art made with such imagination.
During the Milky Way season, photogs flock here since it’s quite a dark skies region. And the various sculptures afford great foreground for astrophotography. Be sure to visit if you are ever in SoCal!

I shot this with my Nikon d750 and the Rokinon 12mm/f2.8 fish eye lens. Single shot edited in Lightroom. ISO 3200, 15 sec exposure.
Also seen in the center of the shot are Ocotillo-desert cacti that produce beautiful deep pink flowers in the spring.

  • To be honest space is really cool. Teachers can make it boring but space is crazy wicked. Everything flies and its so big and infinite. No one can imagine infinite because it's too big. Being in space will be really cool and suck at the same time tho. Like you see all these stars and colors and planets and you wonder what more is out there but you're so lonely and you're alone and you realize space is quite big and if I were in space I would have a panic attack right away no question. Do you think if you go far enough in space you'll see a new color? I can never imagine a new color. It's always a blend of colors. Every time I try to make a new color it looks a bit pink and purple. When I look at the sky and there's nothing there no buildings or tree just empty sky, I kind of slowly shrink down and end up laying on the floor looking up. Its so BIG.

  • I’ve been fascinated by the night sky for as long as I can remember. The first time I saw the Milky Way was on a southwest trip with my dad and grandparents. We sat near the rim of the Grand Canyon one summer night, staring up in awe. My dad pointed out these two bright stars close to each other on the horizon and asked what they were. They kept getting bigger and we couldn’t understand why. Then we turned on a flashlight and saw a mule deer staring right at us about 10 feet away. Those two stars were its eyes 😂 I’ve had some incredible stargazing experiences over the years and I’d love to hear about yours. Do you remember the first time you ever saw the Milky Way or have a memorable stargazing experience? If so, I’d love to hear about it in the comments. Special thanks to my buddy @uh.ware for helping me execute this shot of yours truly.

  • Finding inspiration🌙
.
Sometimes ideas just come to you as a non-stop flow🌌 .
But other times you just can’t seem to make anything good no matter how hard you try...😒
.
Here is a trick that I’ve been using to find my inspiration...
.
I take my time off, and focus on learning a new skill in music (or other creative art). This can be singing, playing an instrument or producing in a specific genre🎵
.
I learn from professionals that mastered this skill. I try to find these people on YouTube, online courses or other places👀
.
After a few hours I start to become better and better at my new skill👊
.
Using my new skill to make my next song really inspires me🤩
.
What ways do you use to get inspired? Let me know in the comments!👇
