“Cruisin’” by Quincy Mumford
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Curated by: @no_floecks_zone
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Genre: #soul
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Quincy Mumford turns on the faucet and falsetto vocals drip out slowly, swirling around the glossy porcelain sink that is “Cruisin’”, his interpolation of Smokey Robinson’s flawless 1979 single. Where Smokey swings in like sweet summertime, Quincy’s version is sweet, but spiked. The sights are a little blurry and the sounds are slurred, slowed down to a crawl. The effect is entrancing, especially as the song expands into the chorus and it feels like the space around you actually grows larger.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The naturally cool cadence in the chorus rings true here. The original was written, produced and recorded by Smokey himself, and the masterful soul music direction translates nicely to a drum kit and synthesizer (the electric guitar sprinkled into the chorus is an appreciated, reminiscent touch). In fact, the entire drum sequence is greatly appreciated, sounding at once like a deep cut from Drake’s Take Care and a 1950s bop, with warm layering and a great build. Think: roller skater at a drive-in diner.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That pulse-in, pulse-out synth is hypersexual - its pulsing warble is part euphoric, scintillating like sweat glistening on skin. Yet somehow, underneath all the heat, the composition and arrangement align this song with courtship songs from the 1950s, barbershop quartets and the like, though the 50s predate the track still by twenty years. Warm and bubbly, vaguely gauzy, light and airy, and confident. Quincy Mumford takes vintage Smokey Robinson to 2019, and 2019 accepts him with open arms.
