  • Habits. It's all about habits and behaviours. You have one set that you've been relying on for years and you need new healthy ones.

It doesn't happen overnight and you can't do it all straight away, it takes time. You have to change them one at a time.

Practise the new habits, practise and practice again to make them stick. Then it becomes part of what you do, you don't have to think about it anymore.

7 habits

1. Drink water. Drink, drink water. Not buckets of coffee that gives you a caffeine crash at 4pm that makes you eat sugar, not diet sodas filled with chemicals and sweeteners. Water. Teach yourself to drink water. Your body needs this.

2. Meal plan. Save yourself from the cupboard searching 'what I am going to eat tonight' dilemma. Plan, shop to the plan, you don't have to eat it but it is there everyday ready.

3. Batch cook. Every time you cook make extra. Lunches for work, tubs for the freezer. There will be many days when you cant face cooking and getting out a tub of last week's meatballs and boiling up rice saves you.

4. Eat less processed food. Eat more fresh food, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Takes time this one, lots of time. Now though, I only go in about 3 aisles is the supermarket, I don't even look at the rest!

5. Learn to cook from scratch. Start with the basics, get a few good cookbooks or magazines. Cook new and interesting foods that you enjoy. Then try new ideas. Keep mixing it up!

6. Sugar. Slowly replace it, bit by bit you will learn to realise you just don't need it. Cravings, bingeing, sluggish... yep thats the sugar rollercoaster you are on. Be kind to yourself. Teach yourself you're better off without it. One by one swap out your sugar for something else.

7. Move. You've been using food to regulate your emotions, you can't take this away and replace it with nothing!! You need to learn a new way. Move more, find a class, get out and go with friends. You won't want to go 90% of the time but you're trying to make new healthy habits here. Get the endorphins buzz, I'll bet you'll be thankful you went.

What habits have you changed forever?
