  • Ask!! I feel like there’s an expectation that if you’ve been sexual with other people that you automatically know what to do in the bedroom. Sometimes asking someone what works for them can be a hard thing to do because of stigmas surrounding what being good at sex ‘should be’ e.g how sex is portrayed in mainstream media and porn VS what being good at sex actually is (communication , team play , working together). However, every body is different and every person had different kinks and genitals, so ask what works for them 🗣 #sexpositive #sexposi #sexpositivity #sexpositiveculture #letstalksboutit #letstalkaboutsex #endthestigma #sexeducation #communication #lowlibclub

  • I have absolutely no words for this. We are in the 21st century, for God's sake, why do people think they can pull this kind of crap. Just to clarify, I don't think waiting for marriage is regressive or backward. I'm just saying that publicly humiliating somebody for the choices they made with their own body is absolutely not okay. Besides, how come the man wasn't asked as well?

  • It is #NationalHIVTestingWeek in the UK! I may be in Seattle ☔️ but this is just in time leading up to #WorldAIDSDay on December 1st ❤️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Have you ever been tested for HIV? Testing is recommended for every individual at least once in their lifetime as a general screening.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I was helping run controls on our HIV tests at work this morning and thought it was a good learning opportunity! This test indicates a positive result (2 lines, kind of like a pregnancy test) but it was done using fake positive solution to ensure our tests are working correctly.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
There are different types of rapid HIV tests on the market, and their use depends largely on funding, as well as other regulations. You may have had or seen an oral swab test, but I’ve personally only worked with finger poke (blood 🔴) tests.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Test manufacturers work to develop the best working tests for the best value, with the smallest “window period” - time between when someone comes in contact with HIV and when the body has developed enough antibodies to fight the virus that they will show up positive on a rapid HIV test. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is an Sure Check test, which detects HIV-fighting antibodies with just a little more than a drop of blood, in 20 minutes ⏰. There also exists an Insti test that works similarly to detect HIV antibodies, but takes only 1 minute. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
HIV testing is quick - 5-20 minutes or so depending on test technology - and pretty painless! The little pink cube in the second image is a lancet that pokes the tip of your finger to allow the tester to dab a bit of blood into the device.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Testing can be scary (it is totally normal to be nervous, shaky, sweaty - I’ve seen it all!) but try to remember you are in the right hands. Testers are trained to give both positive and negative results, and are prepared to support you and connect you with resources regardless of your results. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Interested in #PrEP? I’ve got you! Needing a confirmatory test following a positive result? Let’s go together.

  • I get asked about hair removal all the time. Many times the inquiring party (whether the parent or the patient) has already decided how they feel about hair removal and is just seeking some form of medical validation. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For this reason, I’d like to start my saying that 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞. There is no medical need for hair removal, and hair does not have to be removed for a person to be considered clean.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
More specifically, pubic hair is normal. Its presence indicates pubertal changes and physical development which are natural processes. Additionally, the presence of pubic hair may protect the labia from friction/rubbing and help pull moisture and discharge away from the surface of the skin.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Even so, many women and girls will choose to remove pubic hair for comfort, personal aesthetic, or to prevent it from showing when wearing swimsuits, bodysuits, or certain costumes/uniforms. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
A study done in 2012 (by J. Bercaw) to evaluate pubic hair removal practices found that pubic hair removal was dictated most commonly by pressures from family and friends. While sexually active girls were noted to remove pubic hair more routinely than non-sexually active girls, the removal of pubic hair did not necessarily indicate current, past, or intended sexual activity.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Options for hair removal include trimming, shaving, waxing, using hair removal creams, or undergoing laser hair removal. All of the above options (with the exception of trimming) can cause small breaks in the skin that can lead to irritation and inflammation. When hair follicles become irritated they can form bumps that are red, itchy, or painful (folliculitis). These bumps can get infected, cause discomfort, or lead to scarring.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Certain conditions, like Hidradenitis Suppurativa, can actually be improved with laser hair removal therapy, as it is felt to be a disorder of the hair follicles typically affecting the underarms and groin area.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Ultimately,it’s your body, your choice. No method has been found to be truly superior to the others as goals for hair removal, lifestyle and patient preferences all play key roles in decision-making.

  • It’s important to know the difference. They are not two separate conditions, they are two separate terms used to describe the same virus at different stages! But there’s a problem - one is slowly, but surely shedding its stigma. And the other? Well people still relate it to negative stereotypes and misconceptions. As the narrative around HIV is slowly changing, is the term ‘AIDS’ necessary?
-
To make it clear, I am not a doctor, I am a growing sex educator. This information is easily accessible, yet many still are unaware. My hope is to simply change that. #nationalhivtestingweek

  • This!!!! 👍🏼
As a Clinical Sexologist and someone who’s been in this field for over 15 years I’m still astounded at some of the absolute rubbish I hear. “Information” that is often judgmental, value laden, sexually restrictive, factually incorrect, even blatant lies! Comprehensive, sex positive, inclusive sexual education is still not common place. Australia doesn’t even have one unified national curriculum. It’s ad hoc and not compulsory.
Seeing this today reinforced why I’m so excited to fly to Melbourne tomorrow where I’ll record a few podcasts with the lovely @uncannyannieblog and @itsbiankabitch for their @wewanttobebetter podcast. This is definitely something we will unpack folks. Stay tuned. ———————————————————————-
