  • "I don't need your encouragement", I state simply, staring down the gristled man who could throw me across the room.
.
" I need your knowledge to fill in the gaps that I'm missing."
.
Todd Christensen blinks behind his folded ball cap but doesnt break eye contact. I was irritated with our previous phone conversation. He didn't take me seriously. He warned me he wasn't a box gym. I snapped that if I wanted a box gym, I wouldn't practice a combat art in a reburished garage. .
Open the damn door.
.
If NWJJA is a training ground, SSP is a forge. Chalk. Tires. Chains. Concrete. Sweat. The lights are dim and the room glows with determination and focus. Grunts instead of words. Numbers of the month's best deadlifts on the wall. Yes.
.
Before I knew about #nwjja, I investigated SSP when I moved here 8 years ago, when I started doing heavy lifts via #5x5 / #Stronglifts / #Blueprint. .
My mom always lifted, hoping to look like @themsolympia . She subscribed to Muscle and Fitness in the 80s when female muscle was not vogue. So when we couldn't afford ballet, I lifted with her. When she denied my cries to enroll in judo, I lifted with her.
.
When you compete in bjj as an older woman, they will mix you in with a group by size, not age. I only rolled with one woman near my age, everyone else was 10 years younger...minimum. I have to get serious with my practice, my diet, my flexibility and the strength. This is where Todd comes in.
.
I don't question his 40 years experience. I stop him when he talks about his lack of machines. I don't use machines. I squat, I bench. I deadlift. I pull and I push. I give him my max and he says it's a good start. .
At least I'm not weak.
.
It stings, but I take it. My goal is to add 100 to everything. I roll with men who are big and I need more than technique to survive 5 minutes. .
I deny the belt.
.
"I want to pull 250 raw. There aren't belts on the mat.'
.
He nods and passes the chalk.
.
"Alright, Madame. I'm gonna teach you what I know. Let's get to work." #bjj #blackgirlbjj #jiujitsulifestyle #bjjwomen #seattle #powerfulwomen #powerlifting #sistahswole #weightlifting #strongman #strongwoman

  • You know I've seen the faces of doom and I'm only a man
Help me, tell me I'm sane
I feel a change in the earth, in the wind and the rain
Save me, take me away
You know I've seen some creatures from hell and I've heard what they say

  • Most of my personal library has come from Amazon, not because the price is lower but because of convenience. It’s easy to sit on my sofa and scroll through new releases, hit “add to cart” and mindlessly check out and have a new stack of books at my door the next day. @raven_book_store recent post inspired me to change up that routine and go to one of my many local book stores I used to frequent. I have been to @thirdplacebooks twice in the last week. Once on a date night with my husband and once with my two kids. Both times I was reminded of how much I love the ambience of an independent bookstore and the conversations and recommendations that are had there. When I was at Third Place with my husband we had a lovely conversation with a pair of employees as they were ringing us up about the recent Pulitzer winners and a TV show that one of them loved that was an adaptation from the book series they are planning on reading now. When I was there with my kids an employee recommended them a new graphic novel series and and a fellow customer recommended Vacuum in the Dark to me. The other shopper and I then had a conversation about how I wasn’t a huge fan of Pretend I'm Dead (by the same author) so I wasn’t planing on pick up Vacuum In The dark, but they explained to me what was different about the books and why they thought Vacuum In The Dark was worth tying, so now I’m going to read it. That recommendation isn’t something I would have gotten from Amazon, and even if I had I would have ignored it because there wasn’t someone passionately explaining to me why they loved that book.
I’m really glad Raven Books made their post about independent bookstores versus online retailers and the outcome it has had for me personally.
I really hope that it also inspires others to not only support their local bookstores, but also to enjoy the experience what their local bookstore provides. .

  • Happy Tuesday all, I hope the day is treating you well! Here’s a thought for the day and one geared around the long term. For instance, we can’t jump straight to 3 without enduring the steps of 1 & 2. Seems simple enough? Not always the case, but with each step having significance in the bigger picture. Food for thought, have a great day! 🦜🐥🐣🐰🐺🦕🦁🐿🐕🤠🐎🐖

  • 2 days till the nfl draft! But here’s who we drafted 2 years ago!
Round 2, pick 35: Malik Mcdowell, De
Round 2, pick 58: Ethan Pocic, C
Round 3, pick 90: Shaquill Griffin, Cb
Round 3, pick 95: Delano Hill, S
Round 3, pick 102: Nazair Jones, Dt
Round 3, pick 106: Amara Darboh, Wr
Round 4, pick 111: Tedric Thompson, S
Round 6, pick 187: Michael Tyson, S
Round 6, pick 210: Justin Senior, Ot
Round 7, pick 226: David Moore, Wr
Round 7, pick 249: Chris Carson, Rb
-
This was a good draft in my opinion. Has a lot of upside but upsetting picks also.
Malik Mcdowell was a good pick and I think he would have been good but to this day I still say we should have got Rt Ryan Ramzyck. If you followed my old account you would know this. Pocic hasn’t really done anything yet but I’ll give him one more year before I make any assumptions. Shaquill Griffin has done good so far. I love Nazair Jones to death but I don’t think he’ll be anything more than a depth player sadly. I don’t know why Darboh was let go. I love Tedric Thompson, I seem to be the only one who sees the great potential in him...... and both our 7th round picks in Carson and Moore has done fantastic and looks like both could be long time starters. Would like to toot my own horn more and say I’ve been on the chris Carson bandwagon since day one and still to this day think us drafting a first round rb was dumb.
