  • Final few weeks of work are in sight and tbh I can’t wait. This pregnancy has been so different and I guess running around after a toddler has something to do with it. At a #corporate client today and tomorrow doing #onsite #massage and then things start to slow down, as I’m starting to slow with sciatica that’s making me limp like a pirate with a wooden leg. Did any of you find your second pregnancy completely different ? Or in have any weird symptoms in any of your pregnancies? I’ve Never had sciatica before. #pregnant #sciatica #backproblems #symptoms #tired #maternity #selfemployed #corporatemassage

  • So would you rather listen to your GP when it comes to neck, back and/or shoulder pain to name but a few or your Osteopath?
.
I’ll make this very simple, Osteopaths study anatomy and learn about pain causing structures for 4-5 years full time in university, GP’s study anatomy for a few months and openly admit to me they have hardly any knowledge when it comes to anatomy. .
I had a patient yesterday who went to their GP’s to discuss their pain as they’ve been taking lots of different medication to help control it. When they mentioned they’ve started seeing an Osteopath the GP rolled his eyes and told them to save their money whilst changing the patients medication around. .
I treat lots of GP’s and surgeons and they’re actually very grateful for the knowledge I pass on to them. .
After a thorough examination and case history if I feel the pain is visceral (pain referred from internal organs) I will refer immediately. .
In February 2019 ‘NHS England’ announced plans to mobilise other health care professionals to support GP’s.
Osteopaths along with physiotherapists and paramedics are among the healthcare professions that have been identified as being part of the solution.
.
Mr John Corfield (M.Ost) is one of only a handful of ‘Masters of Osteopathy’ in the North West and one of less than 400 in the whole of the UK

STRETCH🤸‍♂️
---
I was shown a static version of this glute & piriformis stretch 18 years ago & have evolved it into a standing #fascialstretch #mobiltyflow which has given me excellent results....
---
TEKKERS🔎
---
Breathe out into each stretch & breathe in as return to standing. The aim of the exercise flow is to mobilise the #piriformis & #glutes and can therefore offer bang for buck in reducing the symptoms of #sciatica. --- (2 mins each side)
---
STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY👊
---
Combining #Strength (#glutes) & #Mobility (hip complex) exercises may support better long term outcomes for reducing #backpain. ---
RESULTS💪
---
The body will tend to re-set to default patterns unless underlying muscle weaknesses & lack of mobility are not addressed together. ✌❤💪

  • What is a trapped nerve? 🛑

We hear quite regularly with patients coming in for the first time that they believe they’re suffering from a trapped nerve, and what they’re experiencing is a very sharp pain that often comes on with any kind of movement in the shoulder. But invariably it’s actually not a trapped nerve, rather it’s a result of common habits we’re guilty of during the day such as poor posture.

So what is causing the pain? 🚫 Well, it’s very, very unlikely to be a trapped nerve in an injury outside of the spine. 🚫 If you have a tendency to slouch at your desk, poor posture over time can cause discs to become compressed, and joints to rub against one another. ✅ Try to focus on correcting your posture to prevent these occurrences from happening. Look at how you’re sitting on your daily commute, how you spend time on your phone, how you’re sitting on your desk and how you’re relaxing in the evening. ✅ To help the pain, don’t try to stretch or flex the muscles in your neck - this can be counter productive. Instead try using ice (an icepack or bag of frozen peas) wrapped in a towel, held on the area for 3-5 minutes at a time, a few times a day. ✅ You can also try rolling up a towel, to about the thickness of a water bottle, and placing it under the neck for 3-4 minutes twice a day. This can help relieve pressure on the joints and the amount of compression in the neck.

  • How legit can kinesiology taping be? Legit enough to tape a horse! 🐎 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
I was reading that for this horses situation they were having trouble with range of motion as it was jumping hurdles. So how could the tape help with the horses range of motion? •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Bringing a heightened awareness to the nervous system of the horse in this area would possibly allow the horse to lift his leg more. Is it a guarantee? No. However there is a high probability it will help. Never know until you try. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
The fascia is being lifted from the muscle decompressing any pain receptors in that area.(Pain mitigation)

  • Showing off my stripes!
🦓
I was diagnosed with Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome a year ago this week after 15 years of daily headaches and migraines plus other various symptoms. This month is also EDS awareness month.
🦓
Zebras are the symbol of Ehlers Danlos Syndromes. Medical students are taught to look for horses when they hear hoof beats, which means doctors may miss putting together random symptoms to find the zebra. Also no two of us are identical, which can make putting the picture together especially complicated.
🦓
Day to day, my stripes mean that I wake exhausted no matter how much sleep I get. I have wide spread muscle and joint pain in addition to daily headaches and very frequent migraines. If I don't drink plenty of fluids and include a lot of salt in my diet, the I black out on standing. Most recently, I have sciatic nerve pain that has never fully subsided in 3 months.
🦓
Some days are harder than others, but I am excited to continue to learn how to best care for my finicky body.

  • This is what my practice has looked like lately. A lot of healing (my back is feeling much better thanks to PT, turmeric supplements and accupuncture!) A lot of acceptance - this is just what it is right now, I want to do more but I can’t just yet, and that’s okay. And teaching two amazing private clients once a week, which has been grounding and humbling and inspiring all in one. First things first in Asana: take care of your body, take care of yourself ❤️ #yoga #yogateacher #yogatime #sciatica #grounding

  • Don't Be FRUMPY! Stand tall!!
·
So, you think you don't need to retract and depress your back, more specific your shoulder blades.
SWIPE LEFT;
and tell me if it makes a difference on your appearance or height.
·
Besides the discomfort of a holding pattern that you have become accustomed to. You could be standing taller!! Now and as you age!!
·
When you stand taller; you appear leaner. And we could all use those vertical inches to hide our fat or horizontal inches. (Just think of the heals effect on stomach)
·
And yes, we will all get older we get shorter due to gravity and the effect on our spinal discs but standing upright would help you lose less inches as you grow older. ·
Fun fact:
A person that stands tall evenly disperses gravity on their discs. More likely to lose less disc height.

A person with any of the following characteristics; is more likely to lose more disc height due to the uneven or wedge shaped discs.
· Hunch back
· Increased thoracic curve
· Bad posture
· Protracted spine

Just saying.
Don't be Frumpy!!

  • Reposted from @rehab_it_ - Flexion-Distraction is an excellent treatment option for disc herniations, disc protrusions, stenosis, chronic and acute non-specific low back pain.✅
.
In healthy spines, we will use lateral flexion in addition to flexion-distraction to open up the facet joints. 👆🏻
.
Studies have shown that Cox Technique drops intradiscal pressure -198mmHg and increases the foraminal area by 28% which can lead to decrease in radicular and local symptoms of pain. 💥
.
Many providers state that they are performing this technique but it is important they are contacting a segment above where pain is potentially coming from in order to provide REAL results ‼️

  • I find it interesting when people use emojis to hide their faces. Eh. I don’t make pretty faces when I work out 🤷🏻‍♀️. I have much more mobility and a lot less pain than yesterday, but still not 100%. Everything today was modified. I walked. I used 5lb weights instead of my usual 12lbs. No jumping. But something is better than nothing, and the more I move the more mobility I’ll get back.

  • Fibrous adhesion build up around the sciatic nerve at the hamstrings is another common reason for lower back pain.
•
Here are a few signs that your sciatic nerve is stuck with fibrous adhesion:
1️⃣ Your hamstrings feel tight no matter what you try. It may loosen temporarily but the relief never lasts.
•
2️⃣ You experience tingling or burning in the back of your thigh or calf.
•
3️⃣ You’ve “pulled” or tore your hamstring at some point.
•
Does this sound like your problem?

.
👉One of the most common questions I receive is management for Sciatica. In general my feedback revolves around positional changes, setting expectations on tasks and function, discussing beliefs around damage and timeline of recovery. .
📕We will discuss different ways to manage symptoms - one which I have found useful is different forms of gliding movements like the first three videos. The supine version is the easiest to control. The standing has a higher level of balance control but for those who set it up correctly give great feedback. The prone version is the most strength demanding. .
🤸‍♂️Our last key to discuss in initial treatment is the importance to continue training. We will talk about what’s important to them and find ways to keep doing it. Strength is one I always encourage as it is always beneficial. Maintaining strength and fitness through the symptomatic time will put you in a much better place when symptoms resolve.

  • 👉 In my previous post, I went into detail about sciatica, why you may be experiencing it and what you need to do to fix it. Today I am going to be talking about the exercises that you would need to do so you can see a change.⁣
.⁣
STRETCHES⁣
.⁣
The stretches are designed to help stretch the piriformis, create balance in the pelvis, and help to take pressure off of the disc in the spine.⁣
.⁣
STRENGTH⁣
.⁣
As you can see there is one strength exercise but it is very important, it is designed to help strengthen the lower abdominals so it can help to flex the hips but also to create balance in the anterior portion of the pelvis so you won't have these types of issues again.⁣
.⁣
You could also do glute exercises like the glute bridge to help balance the posterior portion of the pelvis as well.⁣
.⁣
CONCLUSION⁣
.⁣
All of these exercises are very effective in helping sciatica but some may be more effective than others for the type of sciatica you are experiencing. So try them out and see which ones work.⁣

  • ❌❌FIX YOUR LOWER CROSS SYNDROME❌❌
.
What is lower cross syndrome and how important is posture? Posture in isolation can be overly criminalized as it may have no correlation with pain or dysfunction in healthy populations... However, posture in combination with movement dysfunction often offers insight on what the body is doing and how it has adapted to holding prolonged positions. Lower cross syndrome is the manifestation of 'tight' low back and hip flexor muscles in combination with 'weak' core and hamstring muscles. So what is the next step? We strengthen whats weak and re-train what is tight.
.
➡️ Banded Glute Bridges - We start with this exercise to start working on the posterior chain, namely the hip extensor muscles such as the glutes and hamstrings. This exercise is great because you also train your body to hold a neutral spine while in hip extension.
.
➡️ Quads massage - here we foam roll out one of your hip flexors, the rectus femoris. This will help us move better during the other exercises
.
➡️ Stale Bugs - These are used to strengthen the core muscles. Trust me when I say these are harder than they look.
.
➡️ Psoas March - this exercise helps us 're-train' our other hip flexor muscle - the psoas muscle.
.
➡️ Hamstring Sliders - Finally, we work on strengthening the hamstrings muscle. Many may find their hamstrings will cramp during this exercise, so take it easy at the beginning, day by day this cramping sensation will go away. .
