  • Life never turns out exactly the way anyone imagines — so stop worrying that you're the only one. The point is what you do now, how you go forward. The point is that you don't let what could have been then get in the way of what still can be later.

  • Self-awareness is when you can recognize that anyone you obsessively dislike is triggering you for a reason. There is something within them that is likely suppressed within you. ⠀
⠀
This is an incredible opportunity for growth. Instead of pointing out what we dislike in others, we can identify what we do not want to be ourselves. Instead of channeling all of that energy toward hate, we can channel it toward our own transformation. ⠀
⠀
Yes, what we hate in others is what we cannot see in ourselves, but what we love in others is also what we love in ourselves. ⠀
⠀
Our relationship to ourselves is the common denominator with how we see others.

  • You are never going to feel secure in the world if you are relying on the world to give you that sense of security.⠀
⠀
You are your own safety net. If you truly work on your own self-development, you become secure because the investment is you. The skills you learn go with you everywhere, nobody can take that from you. The resilience you learn go with you everywhere, nobody can take that from you. The intelligence you build goes with you everywhere, nobody can take that from you.⠀
⠀
Nobody can take from you who you most essentially are. That is why working on that person should be your foremost goal.

  • Hold a steady vision of what you want your life to be. ⠀
⠀
Return to it daily. Elaborate on it, plan for it. Fall in love with this life. Let it light a fire in you. Because that fire? It's going to burn anything standing in your way.⠀
⠀
Do you know when you really, really love someone, and absolutely nothing will stop you from protecting them, taking care of them, defending them, or helping them?⠀
⠀
Imagine if you felt that way about your dreams.

Success is often stealthier than you'd think. Remember this when you assume that someone's grid is their life, or that what you see on the surface is what's happening underneath.⠀

  • I believe that every single person alive has a calling, and until we answer it, we feel uncomfortable and our lives never quite flow right. ⠀
⠀
You hear people say it all of the time. They say "I knew I was meant to be a mom," before they even knew what reproduction was. They say "I knew I was meant to teach," before they even knew what other jobs existed. They say "I knew I was meant to be right here, at this time," even if they didn't know why. They say "I knew I was meant to help people," even if they didn't know how.⠀
⠀
If you are alive, there is a reason, but you still have to show up and do the work.⠀
⠀
Nobody is going to give you worth, esteem, confidence, meaning or efficacy. You have to build the bridge yourself, and walk yourself from where you are to where you want to be.

  • If you are someone who cannot help but take on other people's problems as your own, you do not have an empathy problem, you have a boundary problem.⠀
⠀
Most often, we do this when someone else's pain or discomfort bears so much similarity to our own that we cannot stand to witness it. We try to intervene not out of a desire to help as much as a desire to make that ugly feeling go away. In the end, we help nobody, because we rob one person of the life experiences necessary for them to grow, and we take away our own state of mind.

  • It is easy to begin again.⠀
⠀
It is easy to walk when things get hard. It is easy to think the new job, the new relationship, the new friends, the new city will solve all of your problems and make everything feel better.⠀
⠀
Eventually, things get hard again. ⠀
⠀
Not because there's something wrong with the job, relationship, friends or city, or even you, but because that's life. ⠀
⠀
It is easy to sprout.⠀
⠀
It is harder to bloom.⠀
⠀
You have to choose which you want to spend your life doing.

  • One of my favorite lessons: there can be no desire in your heart without an equal degree of potential to make it reality.⠀
⠀
There are so many things you do not desire. Perhaps you do not desire an advanced degree in mathematics. Perhaps you do not desire a house in the suburbs. Perhaps you do not desire a profession in the arts. That's okay, there are many people who do.⠀
⠀
The reason you do not desire these things is because you do not have the potential to fulfill these things.⠀
⠀
What you desire is always matched in equal proportion by your raw potential to make it reality. If you want something a little bit, you have a little bit of potential to make it real. If you want something so much you cannot even begin to describe the depth of your longing, you also have *that much potential to make it reality.*⠀
⠀
But again, it is all potential right now. ⠀
⠀
You have to actually do the work. ⠀
⠀
Desire alone does not change our lives, it is only the first spark.

⠀
You are who you choose to be, today, no matter what has happened in the past.⠀
⠀
Do not let your coping mechanisms become your comfort zone. Do not let yourself be defined by what you had to do in your lowest and darkest moments. When you hold so tightly to the habits that helped you survive, you forget that sometimes, you have to let go and leap in order to thrive.⠀
⠀
What you had to do to get through it is not who you are, it is just a part of your story.⠀

  • You do know what you're meant to do.⠀
⠀
You do know what you want.⠀
⠀
It is impossible to not know these things, because they are the most essential, basic parts of you.⠀
⠀
They are what you love, what you're interested in, what you like doing, what you feel called to.⠀
⠀
They are what you hate, what injustices you perceive, what you want to change, where you want to grow.⠀
⠀
Your destiny is a reflection of who you are.⠀
⠀
It's not something you have to figure out, piece together, or decode. It's something you have to remember, to pull out and dust off and be willing to truly, completely see.

  • Doing what's comfortable will never give you what you want.⠀
⠀
There are two ways to define a good life: the kind you settle for, and the kind you reach for. You're taught to think that "comfortable" is the best there is. You want to be comfortable financially, comfortable in your relationship, comfortable in your home.⠀
⠀
To hell with comfort.⠀
⠀
Comfort is a subtle addiction. It is a lukewarm life. It will never fulfill you in the way that you think it will. ⠀
⠀
You don't want comfort, you're just afraid to admit what you really want. That's okay, it takes time. When you're ready, you'll realize that the path was always clear. You know exactly what you need to be doing, you just haven't found the courage to do it. ⠀
⠀
You think that doing what's scary will disrupt your sense of peace, but it is actually the only thing that will give it to you. When you do in the present what will benefit you in the future, you find a sense of ease and meaning that eluded you when you tried to live the opposite way around.

  • Do you have an actual problem in your life, or do you have a problem with the way you think about your life?⠀
⠀
There are studies where researchers tracked all of the things people worried about throughout a period of time, and they found that well over 90 percent of those things never, ever happened. ⠀
⠀
For some people, the entirety of their worries were completely fabricated by their minds.⠀
⠀
If you stop thinking about a worry, it will go away on its own. If you stop thinking about a problem, it will get worse. ⠀
⠀
You will know the difference because an actual problem begets action. There is always something that you can do about a problem! That's what makes it a problem. There is almost never anything you can do about a worry. That's what makes it a worry.

  • Emotional health does not always look the way we think it will.⠀
⠀
We think that feeling fear or sadness or guilt means we are broken, when in fact, it is people who cannot feel fear or sadness or guilt who are truly unhealthy.⠀
⠀
You are meant to feel scared when life is scary. You are meant to feel sadness when life is sad. You are meant to feel guilty when you know you haven't lived up to your potential. These are natural, normal, correct responses.⠀
⠀
They only become unhealthy when they get so out of hand that we have to start numbing them to cope. This often happens when we don't take action.⠀
⠀
We often need to do something to find closure, to repent, to change. ⠀
⠀
Life is a verb. Love is a verb. Healing is a verb.⠀
⠀
Emotional health is being able to feel all the depth within you, and not get stuck in one corner or another. It is to take what has happened, to extract all the wisdom you can, and to go forth determined to create a better life for yourself, one filled with more awe and self-responsibility and appreciation for everything your life is, and everything it isn't.

⠀
Accepting yourself is actually the first step toward the most radical, ambitious change of your life. When you hate yourself, you become paralyzed. Someone who hates themselves doesn't work on themselves. They're stuck. When you accept yourself as you are, you behave like someone who accepts themselves. Those behaviors are what change your life.⠀
