  • "My Heart Stood Still" (1927) music by Richard Rodgers and Lyrics by Lorenz Hart. ⁣
⁣
The story goes is that these composers (and their dates) were nearly in a car crash and one of the ladies exclaimed "my heart stood still". Our boys made a note of it and it later became this classic song.

  • What a charming correspondent #RichardRodgers was! Even when suffering a severe back injury he manages to put a funny spin on it in this typed letter signed.
.
.
Typed letter signed ("Dick") from the important American composer to publisher Angus Cameron, mentioning the success of the new musical Carousel.
.
.
Rodgers thanks Cameron for having him and his wife over for dinner in Boston: "...having broken bread with you in your own house, I find it quite impossible to call you Mr. Cameron," and reports: "In case the news hasn't reached you, I am happy to report that CAROUSEL has turned out to be a walloping success. The demand for tickets is greater than for any other show in New York and even the critical reception is quite wonderful considering the experimental nature of the piece. What is most heartening is the reaction of the audience itself. This, of course, is the public that you and I have discussed at some length and seems to bear out once again our pet theory that the people know more than any of us. Just a few days before we opened, some spy from Random House got into my back and twisted the big muscle at the base of my spine with the result that I have been a cripple ever since. I managed to get to the opening but on a stretcher and I am now just beginning to walk, although with the sensation, appearance, and gait of an eight months' pregnancy. Once I get to work on the book, which should be very soon now, I'll get in touch with you again..."

  • This is my favorite piece in my mom’s collection. The 1945 musical “Carousel” was the second collaboration by the team of Richard Rodgers (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics). After the phenomenal success of “Oklahoma!”, the team sought to work together again, so they acquired the rights to the 1909 play “Liliom” by Ferenc Molnar. They worked on changing the setting from Budapest to the Maine coast line and making the ending more positive. The story centers around carousel barker Billy Bigelow and his romance with millworker Julie Jordan. Tragedy strikes the lovers when Billy takes part in a robbery to provide for Julie and their unborn child. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” is one of the well-known songs from this musical, sung in Act II by Julie’s cousin Nettie Fowler to comfort Julie after the disastrous robbery attempt. This sheet music is dated 1945, so like the sheet music I posted in May for “My Fair Lady” - “I Could Have Danced All Night”- I believe my mom heard the musical version of this song as opposed to seeing the 1956 film adaptation of “Carousel”. I’ve included page 1 of the music as I feel the lyrics are among the most inspirational ever written. ***Credit for information on the musical goes to Wikipedia ***#sheetmusicsaturday #carouselbroadway #carouselmusical #carouselthemusical #youllneverwalkalone #richardrodgers #oscarhammersteinll #1945 #broadwaymusicals #broadway #broadwaymusical #inspirational
