  • When #Renault had to close the gap between the #Renault8 and the #Renault16, it wasn't just a matter of filling the gap. Project 117 was to result in a vehicle that not only looked good and was practical, but was also simple enough to be produced in many locations around the world. The design came from Renaults own design studio. It had a pretty unique look that not all Motor Journalists liked. Compared to the #Citroen Ami, or the #Simca 1000, the 12 was much bigger. The trunk was huge, despite the small boot lid. But above all the Renault 12 was extremely comfortable. With the engine Renault remained in the 1300cc class. The car was introduced in 1969, already one year later some important innovations took place. The sporty #Gordini was introduced and there was a huge station wagon. As a "world car" the Renault 12 was produced in several countries, e.g. in #Spain and #Australia. In #Brazil, the #Ford #Corcel was based on the Renault 12. If you look closely, you can see that too. But the best known is certainly the long-time production in #Turkey and the Romanian #Dacia license. Especially the Dacia was notorious for its pitiful quality. However, it has to be said that this is especially true for the vehicles produced after the cooperation with Renault. The very early Dacia 1300 even came from French production. But it should also be mentioned that Dacia produced a quite interesting coupé. And as a pick-up it was produced until 2006 and partly exported.
Let's get to the car in the picture. A Renault 12TL, thats a bit more than poverty spec! Props to the owner, who drove with the carthis gem from Switzerland to Beaulieu-sur-Mer in France - and left the windows open. So we get a glimpse into the somewhat pampered interior. But that's exactly how a car has to look like. The grill betrays that it is a facelift model, so it was probably produced after 1975. In the interior you can see an open ashtray! I hope it contains #Gauloires!

  • The #renault16 was launched in 1965. It was the first large #hatchback. It's revolutionary modular interior helped it become Car of the year 1966. In 1971 the #renaultr16 got a major facelift and gained these rectangular rearlights. Note that this #renault #r16 has got amber reversing lights. In the USA the #16 was sold as the #sedanwagon because of its unusual body that was neither a conventional sedan nor a proper wagon!

  • Renault 16 - a small French car. The car was developed from the beginning of the 1960s under the designation Renault 1500, the premiere of pre-production prototypes was held at the Paris Motor Show in October 1964. Production began in March 1965 at the plant in Sanduvil, Department of Maritime Seine. Family-class hatchback cars, as well as front-wheel drive. In fact, Renault 16 set the standards for this class for many years to come and served as an object of emulation for many manufacturers both in France and abroad. In 1966, Renault 16 was awarded the title “European Car of the Year”. The car was produced for 15 years, and even at the end of this period enjoyed good demand, remaining among the most popular models in its class. From a constructive point of view, the Renault 16 was a front-wheel drive car built according to the layout with a longitudinal engine inside the wheelbase, behind the transmission and main gear. This scheme, characteristic of the first front-wheel-drive Renault or say Citroen DS, determined such features of the car as low traction characteristics due to insufficient loading of the front wheels and the front end of the cabin that was heavily cluttered with the power unit. The suspension of all the wheels is independent torsion and because of the consistent arrangement of the transverse torsion of the rear suspension on the trailing arms, the wheel base of the car on the right and left differed by several centimeters. 1966 Renault 16 Hatchback #renault16 #classic #hatchbacklife

  • A big hatchback with a 5th door and a folding rearseats is totally normal nowadays, but back in 1965 the #renault16 was a completely new concept. The #renaultr16 was such an unusual concept that in the US the #renault #R16 was sold as the #sedanwagon! The #16 was built till 1980.

  • Renault 16 .
The #Renault16 (#R16) is a D-segment family #hatchback produced by #Frenchautomaker #Renault between 1965 and 1980 in #LeHavre , #France #🇫🇷 . The Renault 16 was the first successful hatchback body-style car in a market segment, previously exclusively dominated by three-box, bottom range executive cars, and estates, selling approaching two million cars – all hatchbacks.
Production of the R16 continued until 1980, five years after the arrival of its official successor, the larger #Renault20, with the #Renault18 saloon and estates continuing as Renault's only offering of this size in #Europe. By the time the R16 ceased production most other #Europeanmanufacturers had at least one hatchback on sale, although most cars of the R16's size were still sold as saloons or estates; the exceptions were the #AustinMaxi , #TalbotAlpine (previously sold as a #Chrysler or #Simca) and #VolkswagenPassat . Renault did not build a hatchback of this size until the hatchback version of the Renault 21 was launched in 1989. #Ford and #Vauxhall /#Opel launched their first R16-sized hatchbacks shortly after the R16's demise.
The 16 had no major competitors until the arrival of the #AlecIssigonis designed Austin Maxi in 1969, but the Austin Maxi was not a #strongseller outside of the #UK #🇬🇧
