  • So with all of the questions I’ve been receiving about nutrition advice, I feel like I’ll should just give y’all a brief note about what I do! (Hints- The professional photo of me laughing 🤦🏼‍♀️😂) Hello everyone 👋🏼 my name is Kelsey, and I currently work full time as a clinical RD in a hospital 🏥 In past experiences, I have worked with both athletes (pro and collegiate) and the general population in providing nutritional services. Recently, I’ve decided to pursue the idea of part time consulting with these populations again to provide plans and nutrition education! 💜
If you have any questions or want any more info feel free to DM me!

  • It’s almost time for #FNCE. Tip #1 is to get to FNCE! Talk to your employer about going to Philly this year to attend FNCE. .
.
Why go? Not only are there countless networking opportunities, but there are numerous educational opportunities, chances to see and taste new products, poster sessions and Philadelphia is a great host city! .
.
.
Drive or take the train to save on transportation. Stay with friends or family within commuting distance to save on hotel costs. .
.
.
Talk to your employer about the benefits to FNCE. Propose FNCE in a way that it will make you a better employee and will add value to your organization.

Stress or #anxiety could manifest in food intolerance symptoms or GI distress (bloating, pain, abdominal discomfort, constipation/diarrhea) .
The confusing part is also- food intolerances, dysbiosis, or Gut imbalances can manifest in anxiety (and even depression!) Or viseversa .
Stress and anxiety may make the mind more aware of spasms in the colon. IBS may be triggered by the immune system, which is affected by #stress

The Gut Brain Connection is very powerful!
.
Your gut is connected to your brain via the central nervous system (CNS) and influenced by what’s called the migrating motor complex (MMC). When you’re stressed or anxious, your sympathetic (flight or flight mode) response is triggered
.
This triggered response has your body pumping out adrenaline and also #cortisol.
.
In a flight or flight mode- your body has no clue what the stressor is. Thus, putting energy into DIGESTING becomes a lower priority to allow the system to be more efficient at putting energy into the stress response (raising your heart beat, cardiac output, and blood pressure)
.
The result👉Your #Digestivesystem is slowed down, your GI motility is ⬇️, stomach acid production⬇️, and for some⬇️ immunity (which is why chronic stress and anxiety can make pre existing #IBS, #IBD, #pepticulcers, or #GORD worse and can also put someone at risk for bacterial overgrowth like #SIBO)

  • Crazy Saturday night over here😆
Football and meal planning. Meal planning doesn't have to be complicated nor does it have to take the whole day to execute. .
How to become an expert meal planner and save yourself ⏲&💰.
✅Start by coming up with ideas for some or all meals.
✅Make a shopping list of what items are needed and what you already have on hand. ✅Head to the store to pick up the rest of ingredients.
✅Prep some or all of the items! Even cutting up veggies and not prepping the whole meal can save lots of time when making dinner.
.
I have a few ideas for dinner but really focus on lunch. For me, I hate trying to figure out what I am going to bring for lunch the next day.
.
I tend to make my lists in my phone since I tend to leave home without my grocery list😆
.
Do you meal prep? If so, tell me what your upcoming week looks like or share a meal planning tip that has been helpful for you⬇️

  • Can you get all the nutrition you need through food without taking a supplement? After all, it seems simple: if you eat a wide variety of foods with plenty of #fruits and #vegetables, it should be enough. Right?...
*
My advice may surprise you! Check out what I have to say about #vitamin and mineral supplementation by clicking “blog” with the #linkinbio and searching “mineral supplements” to read the full post!
*
Also keep in mind that your medical history, blood work, current dietary intake, and possible interactions with other medications all need to be considered before decisions on vitamin supplementation are made. Schedule an appointment with me through the #linkinbio to see how I can best evaluate your needs!

  • We hiked almost 7 miles today! Hiking is my favorite way to exercise because it’s more like playing than exercise. Definitely needed some slow-release energy half way through our adventure. I could really tell a difference in energy when the carbs in this bar started doing their job!

  • 5 weeks out, Compilation of days 2&4

Video 1: 265x5. Featuring @quadiyama
Video 2: 232x6 - t shirt press
Video 3: 300x1 - comp press

Cronin and I have been working hard on my bench. I must say, it probably isn’t easy coaching someone who has had multiple pec strains, along with shoulder and bicep tendonitis - but we working.

One area we are focusing on is my eccentric control. I have always been a sink and heave bench presser. While that isn’t a huge issue, we are still focusing on touching my chest a bit lighter on some variations. For example, we have been incorporating 1-2 board presses - with a light touch, as well as t shirt presses. This has improved my overall confidence during the eccentric - especially on heavier loads.

What have you been working on to improve your bench press?

  • Who has used buckwheat in baking before? 🙋‍♀️ They are a great addition to these energy bites for some crunch!
Here's the recipe: 2 cups pitted dates (soaked in hot water for 30 minutes) + 1 1/2 cups oats + 1/2 shredded coconut + 1 tsp vanilla + 2 tbsp coconut cream + 1 cup toasted buckwheat. Add all ingredients except buckwheat in a food processor until mixed. Shape into balls and roll in the buckwheat. Enjoy!

  • #FNCE tip #2 - “Expo Hall 101”
•
Warning...when you take your first steps into the expo hall it is very overwhelming! Last year, I stood at the top, looked down, and thought to myself “ummm where do I even start?!?!” 😬 My top tip for the expo hall is to start in the back first - I feel like everyone gets sucked into the beginning stations. You just have to put your blinders up, walk past the shiny objects, and try to go where everybody else isn’t. But, try is the key (it will be hard haha) - the busiest times for the expo hall are in between sessions, if you want to go when it’s less crowded you may want to consider walking around during a session. The last day is also a good time, there are less samples, but there are less people!!
•
You also have to remember (myself included 😬) that you don’t need all of the free stuff that they have available. Did I need 5 pop sockets last year? No no I did not, but I sure thought I did at the time 😂 Try to stick with the things you think that you will really need/use - like handouts for your clients or a fruit- shaped stress-ball for your desk 😉
•
The expo hall was one of my favorite parts of last year and I can’t wait for you to experience it too 🤗🎉🍎

🍤 ☀️👙☀️ 🍤
.
On a cold winter ❄️ day shrimp cocktail is the last thing I want but in the hot sun it’s perfect! .
I’m a big fan of protein for so many reasons! One reason is that it’s so satisfying. Another is that it fills you up without filling you out. Do you agree? ⤵️⤵️⤵️

  • 🌈Today I went grocery shopping, and pear & apple tasting up at Canaan Hill Farm. Pat & Jeanie were the first farmers I met when I moved here and stared my connection with the local farming community. Give them a follow, contact them, and get some groceries. 🌈🛒 If we want to improve our health, it starts with what we put in our mouth. This is where health is at. Right here in the soil. In the foods that grow from it. Healthy soil makes healthy food. Pat & Jeanie use better-than-organic-standard growing practices on their farm. It doesn’t get better than this. 👍🏼Check out that last photo... Pat in his high tunnel. This holds the winter crops that will be coming on: Brussels sprouts, cabbage, broccoli + cauliflower. 🥦
We are made of trillions of cells. The foods/drinks that we take in literally turn on and off the genes that exist in every cell of our bodies. It’s call “epigenetics.” Oxford Dictionary definition: “The study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself.” 🧬 We are born with a set of DNA that is in every cell of our bodies. 23 chromosomes from Mom. 23 from Dad. These genes are interacting constantly with the environment around them. Example: you may have a family hx of Diabetes from your Mom. But you are in control of whether you “turn on” your genes to continue the gene expression for Diabetes. It’s your choice. Eat and live healthFULLY, and you won’t express those genes. Does that make sense? Pretty amazing. We have a lot of say in our health. We can start with what we put in and on our bodies. .... today I started with locally foraged chanterelle mushrooms + fresh sage. Later I’ll make a veggie frittata. I’m turning on my genes to create a body and mind a spirit of health, vs. dis-ease. Tell me a way in which you are choosing health today?! I would love to hear it! Cheers to our good health!

  • Ran across this recipe for “Asado Chicken and Sautéed Lemon Zucchini ” on Pinterest and was NOT disappointed ☺️ I added cauliflower rice in with the zucchini to add some extra veggies (story of my life). Search for recipe name on Pinterest and it should pop up, DM me if you want me to send you the link ⭐️ made extra for Chris to take to work (I always cook excess for leftovers, it saves so much time and energy)

Other meal prepping I did today: cut up all my raw veggies for snacking, made some overnight oats, and baked some sweet potatoes. Little stuff to help us eat healthy all the time ⭐️

  • Think beyond the butternut! 💛🧡 There are so many yummy winter squashes in season right now including buttercup squash which I used to make this curried squash soup. Buttercup squash is full of vitamin A, vitamin C and other nutrients, but more importantly, is so creamy and delicious! This drinkable fall feast features fresh Massachusetts cider and my easy homemade squash soup. 🍁🍎🧡my recipe is always changing but today it was something like the following:
1 medium buttercup squash halved, seeded and roasted for 45 minutes at 400
4 cups veggie broth
1 cup low fat milk
1 tablespoon curry powder
Salt and pepper to taste
Heat and blend until smooth

  • Hey there! 👋 I'm Emma. I am a Registered Dietitian, nature enthusiast, and colour-coder extraordinaire.
__

I've lived all over this big beautiful country, but these days I call Prince Rupert, BC, home. Catch me running alongside the ocean or getting lost in the trees! 🌲

I believe good food and good health go hand in hand. I also know that in today's culture of ever changing nutrition information, wacky celebrity diets, and quick fixes that never live up to the hype, it can be hard to know what's what.

I'm here to help you cut through the noise and discover a way of eating that brings joy, connection, and wellness.

I provide in-person nutrition counselling in Prince Rupert and online nutrition counselling throughout British Columbia. Head on over to the website (link in bio) to get to know me better and check out what I have for you on the blog!

Excited to start this journey with y'all. ❤

  • We graduated!! 👩‍🎓🎉❤️ Feeling all sorts of fired up and inspired. When you cry more than once at a conference, you know it was GOOD! 😭💕We talked a lot about imposter syndrome and how what we do as Metabolic Dietitians and providers MATTERS. I firmly believe that whatever you do, you should do it with your whole heart and that your career + your passions + your purpose really shouldn’t be separate because at the end of the day it’s YOUR LIFE🤷‍♀️ Grateful for the AMAZING dietitians in this field who dedicate their life to nutrition science to save lives 📚 they graciously poured their wealth of knowledge into us this week 💕 I’m excited to share with YOU even more about my experience (check the stories) because whether or not you think it, it really does impact your life too. 🙏🏼 What are you fired up about this week? How will you shine that light with others?

  • Is there a happier sound than freshly-foraged mushrooms sizzling away in a cast iron pan? Not to me. Not right now, anyway! Thanks Jeff!
Okay you shroom heads. Can you name these mushrooms?________ & ________🍄
Mushrooms contain awesome health benefits- one of these mushrooms in particular, boasts high levels of B1,2,3 + 5. “These vitamins play a fundamental role in converting food into energy and keeping the nervous system healthy. In addition, mushrooms are high in fiber, keeping regular bowel movements and gut health in check. This single mini-trumpet mushroom has been associated with anti-microbial, bacterial and fungal properties in addition to being high in vitamin C, D and potassium.” https://www.healthfitnessrevolution.com/top-10-healthiest-mushrooms-and-their-benefits/

  • Burrito bowls are a great go-to meal especially for families because you can keep all the ingredients separately then each family member can create their meal based on preferences and nutritional needs. You can switch out the protein source and veggies for some variety. If you want more simple meal planning tips come to my workshop in Dublin on Monday at 6pm. Reach out for questions.

  • COCONUT ALMOND BAKED CHICKEN TENDERS 🤪 // Recipe from @eatingbirdfood —
INGREDIENTS

1 lb organic boneless skinless chicken breast, cut into strips
1 egg
1/2 cup almond meal
1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut (or 1/4 cup more almond meal)
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 400°.
Place almond meal, coconut, paprika, cayenne, garlic, sea salt and black pepper in a small bowl. Stir to combine.
Crack egg into another shallow bowl and whisk.
One by one, dredge each chicken tender in the egg bowl, wiping off any access and then dip each into the almond meal mixture. Roll until each tender is covered completely. Place the coated tenders on a baking pan lined with parchment paper or a wire rack that fits on a baking sheet. The wire rack will make for a crispier texture. Bake for 20 minutes, flipping the tenders once at the 10 minute mark. When done the chicken tenders will be golden brown and completely cooked through. Remove tenders from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving. (After cooking I put the tenders back in the oven on broil for a few minutes to make them crispy) So good! I’ve eaten enough chicken fingers for the year. #chickentenders #nutritionbynathalie #allgoodeats

  • Hi, I’m Lauren 👋🏼 There’s a few new faces around here so I thought it’d be fun to reintroduce myself (actually, I don’t think I’ve ever introduced myself in the first place 😅).
.
🌿I’m a Registered Dietitian & Nutritionist who specializes in plant-based nutrition.
🌿I have a virtual private practice, where I see everyone from those who are vegan or vegetarian, to those simply wanting to incorporate more plant-based food into their everyday eating pattern (link in bio to book a free 15 minute discovery call with me!)
🌿 I have a Masters of Public Health in Nutrition & Dietetics, with a collaborative specialization in Women’s Health.
🌿I’m a Canadian RD living in Toronto, Ontario, but from Halifax, Nova Scotia!
🌿I started this Instagram a little less than 2 years ago as a way to share plant-based recipes + evidence based nutrition information, and it brings me so much joy to be able to do that everyday! In those two years I’ve also started a YouTube channel, blog, and often speak at events. I seriously feel like I’m living my dream job.
🌿Running is my favourite form of movement- it brings me so much peace.
🌿My favourite food of all time is Thai green curry.
🌿My favourite show is Friends- I watched it when it was airing live with my Dad and have been obsessed ever since. I’m pretty much constantly watching it, and once I finish the series I start it again 😅 My favourite episode is The One with the Unagi or any of the thanksgiving ones! 🙌🏼.
.
Now I wanna know about you! What’s your favourite food? Favourite show? Favourite pastime? Let me know! 👇🏼
